So while my Katie was still here, we decided on the spur of the moment one morning to go up to Mt. Takao (Takaosan) because the weather was so pretty. It's about an hour west of Tokyo...so it's close, which was good, because we had plans in Tokyo that night. Hopped on a few trains, and intended to then take the chair lift half-way up the mountain, then climb at least part way up to the temple...but...as we walked out of the Takaosanguchi train station, the first thing I saw was the shuttle van to Ukai Toriyama - the restaurant I thought we might go to after a little hiking. Quick change of plans...let's go!
8 minutes or so later, we were both like, huh?? Tingles and amazement and a little awe as we saw kimono clad men and women (at least 8 of them!) positioned along the roadway in front of the restaurant, all bowing to us in the van as we passed. Was there royalty in the van with us, or was this actually for us??
Yep. Turns out it was for us...and the most amazing afternoon began, just like that!
Entrance to Ukai Toriyama....we didn't have reservations, didn't know we needed them, got in anyway...thrilled already, can you tell?
The "lobby" of the restaurant. By the time I saw this, I was beside myself. Pure, enchanted glee. OMG. I mean, I'd seen pix of this place online, but never expected it to actually look their website!Â
Our server guided us through a path and over than red bridge to our own private dining cottage. Katie and I were both just silly with amazement. I kept saying "We're in a movie! We're in old Japan!"
And the view from our veranda - other cottages across the way so artfully placed that you could never see inside to other diners.
Koi in the pond right outside our room.
Katie looking awfully cute on our veranda...It's a wonder she wasn't pinching herself...I sure was!
Our very sweet server, bringing us tea and "oshibori" - steaming hot towels.
We can hear the water and bird song, smell the tatami, taste the tea, see the beauty all around us. Yeah. We're happy.
We chose the smaller set course...which was around $60 each. For getting to be in our very own Japanese movie set, I figured it was a steal. ;-) Course #1. Based on the season - autumn - mushrooms, some kind of little tempura stems, and a roasted mountain potato, meant to be reminiscent of the full moon, which we'd seen the evening before...
Plenty of time between courses to enjoy the room and the garden...
Second course - a chicken dumpling, winter squash and okra. Other than the okra, it was delicious...Just can't really go for the slime factor of okra...
She brought this into the room, but left it at the door. It's for much later...
Course #3 - a mushroom soup. So fragrant. Earthy, toasted smells and tastes. I loved it. Katie...well, remember, she's picky....
This is so Katie...that expression. I assume she's just said something smart to me...that's the look she gets when she thinks she's pretty clever...
And this is probably me bent on ignoring her smart comments!
Or maybe I just gave in and laughed! Or maybe I'm just so happy I can hardly stand it. I am in HEAVEN at this place!!!
The fish course arrives...on display!
She tells us it's skewered to look like it is still alive and swimming...
Hmmm...swimming yes...alive, not so much.
But Katie is soooo excited about this fish since it's "shioyaki", which she seems to know all about, though she's never had it. The fish is encased in salt, then after 30 minutes of so, it's grilled over hot coals. You can see all the salt still on the tail. It was delicious.
Next came the hot, hot coals, brought in by this friendly guy. He looks pretty happy to get his picture taken with Katie.
Then our server brought in chicken, green onions and some other vegetable on skewers and showed us how to cook them.
This is the only course we didn't really get a picture of because it was crazy yummy. I mean, seriously, seriously delicious food. The chicken was half raw, but tender as all get out, and the sauce! Oh. The. Sauce.
Last course - rice, misoshiru (miso soup) and pickles.
Reluctantly, we left our room...but we had to get back to Tokyo and we wanted at least a few minutes to walk through the garden. Here's the view as we stepped out of our room...
And tea hut...look at that thatch!!
It's probably a good thing we had plans that night or I'd still be there taking pictures. Unbelievably beautiful.
We headed back to the lobby to pay...and it turns out that when you hand over money, even a lot of money, to someone as adorable as this girl, it doesn't hurt a bit!
The van took us back to the station and we headed home...without hiking for even one minute. We'd time traveled, instead....
