she leaves and minutes later sees the entire dormant volcano go up in flames. there is no way anyone could have survived such an explosion. she races back to hephaestus’ workshop and her ever-logical mind is telling her that it’s impossible that he survived. he is certainly dead. her best friend is certainly dead. but as logical as her mind is her heart has always been stubbornly hopeful. percy jackson has never let her down. he didn’t believe she was dead the previous winter when she was kidnapped by atlas, and she can’t believe he’s dead now (she doesn’t think about how she knew luke wasn’t dead either and what that might mean about her feelings for percy). two weeks go by and it’s radio silence. there is no reason to believe he’s alive and every reason to believe that he’s not and yet. annabeth can’t accept it. they have a funeral. she has to make a speech and burn his shroud and it doesn’t make any sense because even though she knew he was prophesied to die before they were even friends percy jackson has never let her down
