Introverted Intuition (Ni): Mongkut is a visionary who knows that his country must modernize and shift its values to accommodate a rapidly changing world. He reads people well, senses their true intentions, and can accurately predict their behavior and inner workings through minimal interaction; immediately, he senses both Anna’s problem areas and her potential. He sees that she cannot overcome the past hurt of her husband’s death in order to move on. Mongkut never takes things at face value, but instead deeply ponders them. He knows that not all is what it seems to be and lies to form long term plans that will help bring his vision – be that the future of Siam or a simple ball – into reality.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): His compassion is great, but torn between his personal desires and his wish to remain true to the responsibilities of his position. He is a humanitarian forced into allowing an execution because Anna interfered and undermined how people might perceive him. Mongkut is somewhat open with his sorrows and pain. When confronted with unpleasant truths, he lashes out emotionally with the intention of showing Anna an area in which she is emotionally deficient. He greatly cares about how others view him and Siam; he also respects certain traditions of Siam, and does not want his son to become too progressive too quickly, out of fear of the social consequences.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): He is analytical and questions the motivation behind things; Mongkut’s ability to explain why certain things are done the way they are shows how much he has pondered them in order to fully explore their meaning and significance. He chooses his words carefully and is not above analyzing Anna or his own behavior for inconsistencies.

Anna Leonowens: I would like to know why… , if science can unravel something as beautiful as music… , why it cannot posit a solution for a schoolteacher and a king.

King Mongkut: The manner in which people might understand such new possibilities is also process of evolution.

Anna Leonowens: Everything in Siam has it’s own time.
