Writing As (Always) Sex Scenes of the Past and Future
Sometimes, I just feel like writing things...
I was thinking about an upcoming scene for the final flashback episode of As (Always). I’ve been wanting to write it for a long time, but knew I had to get the characters and backstory to a point where it would feel cathartic. Thinking of the scene made me realize I have never written a love scene for Olivia and Fitz. I have written different kinds of sex scenes (more to come about this below). But something languid and sensual? Not yet. Maybe subconsciously I was reserving that kind of sexual tone for the backstory moment I just mentioned.
Of course, I’m not picking sex scene tropes out of a hat or some ‘how to’ guidebook. I just write what seems to make sense for what the characters are going through, even when the scenes are slightly uncomfortable (Olivia & that erotic asphyxiation fantasy without first talking to Fitz (episode 2), uncouth (Brock sexualizing Fitz despite Kenny, his date, being beside him (episode 9)), or disturbing (Olivia, during sex, swapping out her fiancé for Fitz (episode 12)). One thing about me, however,
I don’t shoehorn in a sex scene if it doesn’t make sense to me, or I can’t answer ‘why’. There’s nothing wrong with an Olitz sex-capade, and this is NOT a ‘how-to’ for anyone or anything. I enjoy reading and writing sex-a-thons. I thought that’s what I was writing when ‘Royals’ (now episode 1) came to me. I was writing the type of ‘ish I wanted to see on that site. It wasn’t until the last two lines that I realized, oh shit, Olivia is pregnant. That’s why she devised this whole little playroom sitch for Fitz.
Sometimes the sex comes first, and I figure out the ‘why’ as I just mentioned. Episode one was the sex, and in a way the rest of the story has been me discovering the ‘why’. Following the details I casually dropped in episode 1 (what did I care, it was a one-off!),
led to building out the Olitz alternate universe after deciding it could be a real story. Doing this took me backward before it took me forward. It was a risk, but it’s helped me understand my version of the characters and their story. I can still vividly remember writing the dinner scene in episode 4A when I realized, oh shit, Fitz and Mellie’s son died shortly after he was born. I’m a fucking sucker and I shed real tears when I wrote that part. That got me thinking about how the past is always present. It wasn’t until I came back last year with episode 5 that I knew where the story was going and vaguely where it will end.
At other times, what the characters are going through informs the sex that happens in the episode. Shower sex (episode 7) to contrast with Liv’s past views against it; parallel masturbation fantasies of the other on the same night, though separate (episodes 11 & 12). Episodes 13 & 14 will both give you something different, contrasting in purpose, intensity and emotion.
But sometimes, I am just interested in a sexual idea or topic and wonder how my faves—Olivia and Fitz—would handle that situation, or I’m curious to see it represented in Olitz fan fic. Some things I shy away from because—to be frank—I sense they will be more trouble than they are worth. Maybe I’m waiting to be brave. Here are a couple of sex things I plan to explore at some point in this story (not limited to):
· A fetish scene. I’ve discussed this in collab with one of you readers already. I roughly know this will fall near the end…for reasons.
· Magical realism love scene
· Sexual failure or dissatisfaction
· Voyeurism
Again, I’m not limited to I’m also not too shy to accept pitches. DM, Tumblr Anon or email (adotpetunia(at)gmail(dot)com) if you are shy but want to share an idea. So long as the desire is reciprocated with an adult, anything is possible. But please don’t be offended if I don’t feel I can do justice to your idea. That just means that you should write it 🙂.

I’m now on the 2nd edit (not shown). This one is about refining, making sure the themes are evident, the structure is right, continuity and progression. Often, it’s during this edit that a song title reflecting the episode’s themes/character dynamics is chosen.
do you think 509 irreparably damaged the olitz relationship, as in they could never be the same with each other again, or was it a necessary part for their growth?

Thanks for your question. There are things about 509 that I do not like, and are insufficiently narrated in the lead up to the argument in 509. HOWEVER, the argument itself was written really well and Tony and Kerry acted the house down boots yes gawd *tongue pop*.
It shook the fuck outta me. I was heart broken. BUT, I think all of the caustic things that came out in that argument ended up being necessary for their growth. Both of them tried to blame the situation they were in and we saw that, ultimately, as individuals the problem of the relationship (lack of communication, trust, prioritization, accommodation, etc.) was on THEM.
Fitz needed to become more independent of Olivia and be there to support her. His whole life couldn’t depend on her. That kind of codependency is not good for healthy relationships.
I think Olivia really needed to see that her perspective on power had become extremely warped in Washington. It was hurting her more than it was helping. As the GOAT Lauryn Hill said, “thought what I wanted was something I needed.” And it just wasn’t.
Those are my pennies. If you want a creative perspective on this, @anincorrectpetunia just finished retelling the post-509 Olitz story that gives them a resolution they really deserved.
In sharing each step of how an ‘As Always’ episode evolves. I prefer writing in the morning, before I become a ball of responsiveness to my surroundings and other people’s needs. I’ve just finished drafting all the scenes for the next update 🙂. I hope to start round 1 edits and the typed version this weekend.

While I’m committed to the story I see in my head (goes for all my fics), once they leave my brain and are available for consumption, that’s the hardest part.
I feel secure in my ability, but I’m an artist who’s sensitive about her shit. Sometimes it takes me at least a week to peek at comments/kudos (or lack thereof—the most crushing). Yes, I’m doing it for the love of the game, but it’s still nice to know how people are receiving your work. I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels this way, despite posts I see about “you should just write fan fic because that’s what you want to do, not for validation!”
No shit. But people are still human—with sensitivities, insecurities, and even jealousies. All that stuff helps shape the stuff we write. Sometimes it even bleeds off the page.
I had a comment from someone in my real life who read the pre-posted draft, and unfortunately, it triggered a self-critique I already harbored. So, I know I need to be in a better place mentally so whether it’s good, bad or indifferent (the worst 😭), it won’t affect/delay my next update (I’ve already started ep 21 🙂).
It’s “just fan fiction” but it’s also not. All that to say, I’m staying in my fantasy delusion right now by continuing to write ✍🏾 and make sure I can bring all my major and minor plot points together.
Olivia and Fitz head to NYC to visit Fitz's family, and it brings up some complicated feelings for her as she nears her 3rd trimester.
