it was quite interesting to watch the ghost teen as he slipped through the wall and back again. martin wondered how, exactly, he could use this boy to eventually help him - either in escape or to get to malcolm. whatever he learned would be filed away for later use.
"well, isn't that quite a thing," he muses about edwin being able to move through the wall. "chains? well now, who's found themselves in that sort of predicament? not my son, malcolm, i should hope. you may as well tell me the full of it if you want my help. go on, i'm waiting with open ears."
the boy knows that his father would not approve of these methods. neither would charles. after all, he's gone alone to talk to a serial killer deemed so dangerous he is tethered to the wall. but he needs answers and patience has never been a virtue when it comes to knowledge. so he allows himself to once again entertain a living person with something so innocuous about being dead it barely registers as a novelty.
"no, your son is whole and hale. though, he will not approve of my speaking with you of that i am sure. " if anything, malcom would have wanted to be present from what he understands of how the man works. an odd family dynamic but he could not exactly judge. "i am working a case where a man was captured by a sprite of sorts. it normally will cage their prey for later consumption and this one felt it warranted chains as their tether. however, upon returning the sprite found the man gone but without any blood or viscera to explain the escape. i have much knowledge on escaping entrapment but i am at a loss on how he did so while still being alive. his medical report does say he had broken ribs, concave in nature. i suppose i am asking you if one could...would caving in one's own chest be capable and would they live to tell the tale."

Sometimes Edwin feels really lonely. He doesn't think that anyone can understand him and his living style. It’s not something unusual. First of all, Edwin is not good with people. And secondly, he is the last Time Lord. Then he meets Charles Rowland, a boy with such a shining, but bruised personality. And they begin to travel through time and space together. They definitely need each other, and love blooms brighter than every star in the universe. "The universe was made just to be seen by your eyes, Charles"
the world seems much scarier since port townsend. since his whole world view had shifted on its' axis. since he'd been both denied a return to hell but also now had it resting over his head if he slips for a moment. charles had said they had all the time in the world to figure it out. but edwin is a selfish boy and he wants something now. the yearning in him wishing to be freed like the boy who had clawed his way out of hell.
"i suspect not." edwin knows if he had been alive when thomas had in any way been in england he'd have had the same experience. a quick interest snubbed out by how edwin is not a boy who loves so easily. "my god does not seem to believe in a rigorous right and wrong standing as i would had thought when brought up on the bible. it seems much more bureaucratic with room for error." there is a tinge of bitterness that coats his words. a familiar anger over the injustice of his captivity.
phones did little to interest the edwardian. everything required a heat he did not have and with how different they are to what he had ever known he does not find it easy to learn. "a party? i...suppose i could experiment with the concept. after all, crystal is always referring to my reluctance to step into the modern era."
the cat king almost wondered what it would be like - to love so strongly as edwin seemed to feel for charles. to love and be loved in a way that seemed almost terrifyingly open. it did not suit the trickster, however, and so he allows such thoughts to be cast from his mind. those thoughts - those ideals - were far too human a concept. ( or so he would like to believe. perhaps thomas was just as afraid? )
"your god seems to be selfish in his desire to be loved. to be given attention. i have lived long enough to watch wars and genocide and horrors of all kinds be enacted in the name of your god," thomas shakes his head and grins. perhaps he could almost understand this christian god, for he too, would enjoy being loved so stupidly. "i think your god is a trickster," admits thomas. "though, he is far more cruel a trickster than i could ever be."
although the acceptance seemed somewhat hesitant, thomas still took it in strides. pupils dilate in that way a cat's does when excited and if he had a tail, it would surely be shaking in that ' i like you and i am so happy ! ' way that a cat's could. "i will throw you the most grand party! everyone who doesn't get invited will be seething with jealousy." he seemed a tad too excited by that prospect. "ah, i suppose i should throw something quite tame. i do not think you would survive the type of parties i throw otherwise."
it is all so new to him. the feeling of being so in love. of having someone who cares for him without reservation. edwin has always been a lot for anyone to handle. his parents had very rarely bothered to give him more than a nod of acknowledgement if they were ever home and his schoolmates hated his intelligence and countenance. but charles...he did not care. he took everything in stride and seemed to enjoy edwin's scathing nature.
"history is filled with actions of anger and genocide masked with the excuse of religious zealotry. but in reality the want is one thing and one thing only. they want power." he's sure esther would agree with their ideology. many were driven mad by the concept. "i believe him to be whatever the person who prays to him wishes. he changes based on personal morals and can be bastardised at will."
for a moment edwin wonders if he has made a grave error. the trickster could find any excuse to get him flustered with this plan. but edwin hopes that his mind did not stray so far into the gutter. "i am sure whatever plans you enact will be a surprise to me but i will endeavour to see them through."
edwin finds comfort in the older man in a way he never has with other adults. most overlooked him or caused him to feel the loneliness that permeated him even in death. hotch is the true father for both dead boys that they had never had in life.
"charles would have taken my place in a second had i let him which i could not do. he often places himself in harms way to protect me especially after i was dragged back to hell. i do not want him to believe that his job is merely to shield me when i can do the same for him." plus, charles has felt enough pain. enough anger. edwin is so used to the feeling it often washes off his back without much notice.
he hates when they fight. being without charles is akin to being without the sun. despite his want for charles to be more than just a protector edwin finds even the smallest noise frightening when his friend isn't there to deflect attention away from him.
"i could not bare to see him harmed. we did not find many of the souls taken and if charles were to disappear...i would not survive. i had to act. but he got so angry over it."
the two ghost boys were truly like children to him and hotch is proud to call them sons. though he finds it almost sad to know they did not find a father figure who did not mistreat them, until death.
the problems remind hotch that the two are still young and it almost makes him smile. "i can tell that charles feels the same for you, edwin. he wants to protect you for all of the same reasons." and it was true - charles rowland did feel the same.
"have you thought about the possibility that he's less angry than scared? charles lost you once and that probably made things realer than they had been before. he's probably terrified of it happening again and being unable to help."
sometimes people misplaced their feelings - lashing out instead of allowing themselves to admit the truth. hotch could only assume this is how charles felt after all, the other would not ever leave edwin.
"communication is the best thing. tell him how you feel."
edwin can understand hotch's point. charles has often proven he does not enjoy edwin being in harm's way. he would rather take the hit than allow a single blow to befall the edwardian. but edwin hates knowing that he could do something and not end up doing it. he has been harmed a lot in his life and he can handle it in order to protect charles who never should have known the feeling of a fist against flesh.
both boys wanted the same thing. to keep each other safe. to spend eternity together. to solve cases and never be parted. this fight is not an old one. it is one they have had over and over. but this time...something had been different. charles had reacted differently than edwin had ever seen him.
had he mistaken fear for anger?
"i had not thought about that. i know he has found parting from my side difficult since...regardless, i did not realise that fear had become something more." he could not speak of hell so soon. not of what happened and what charles had seen. what had been confessed on the spiral steps.
regardless of the decades back on the surface humanity still sometimes evaded the young ghost. emotions a constant confusion. but he has to try. for charles. his internal niko whispering words of encouragement.
"i'm scared how to begin such an conversation."
“You must be a lot of fun at parties. What’s got your knickers in a twist?”
"I do not attend parties. I merely wish that people take accountability for when they make idiotic decisions."
Angst thought in my head that someone curses Charles to basically see his life if he never died. So he grows up and has a full life but he comes back to awareness in like his forties, finds Crystal and basically convinces her to go to St. Hilarions in order to find Edwin who never left cause he never had a reason to. Boy just so alone.
Either that or I wanna write a fresh out of hell Edwin and him just getting to experience things for the first time.

if anyone told edwin that doing something would make charles happy he'd literally do anything. for sure several enemies of the boys have used this to trap edwin.
The Case of the Archangel
Gabrielle took a deep calming breath as she stood outside of the door for the Dead Boy Detective Agency.
She had originally debated on just appearing there in the office, but she didn’t want to spook (pun intended) these “detectives.” Wouldn’t make for a great first impression anyway. And who knows if they would be willing to help if they knew who/what she was. In her experience, humans (living and dead) didn’t really react well to meeting an archangel.
Fact of the matter was, there were souls that needed help, and she wasn’t able to do it herself. Yes, she was an Archangel of the Lord, but using her powers to that level would definitely set some alarm bells off upstairs. Gabrielle knew that the moment she snapped her fingers to try to help, she would be literally dragged back to Heaven or would have to kill some of her siblings to escape. No, she would need help if she wanted to help those people. And who better than these Dead Boy Detectives she’s heard so much about?
Reciting her cover story in her mind, she brought her hand up and knocked on the door.
“Hello?”

Charles had taken the day off in order to head with Crystal for some rage therapy as she so referred to it. Edwin had rejected the invitation due to the sheer violence of it and after Charles had seen hell the other had not pushed the issue. The Edwardian had been through enough violence without causing more himself.
So he had taken to reorganising their files for the Night Nurse. She had wanted a detailed list of all their cases so she could close several open cases that they had already solved. The paperwork calmed him and reminded him of all the good the Dead Boy Detective Agency had done for those around him.
Normally, he'd ignore the knock at the door. Charles hated when he met with clients without him. However, he felt inclined to call the person in.
"Enter." Once she entered he gave his best Charles smile for her to try and alleviate any fears she had. "Welcome to the Dead Boy Detective Agency. My name is Edwin Payne. May I ask your name and the reason for your visit?"
