Hi everybody, weâre back! Sorry we didnât post anything last week. But as you may know, we were participating in the 35th edition of Ludum Dare. And, as a matter of fact, we couldnât take the time to write anything.
To rectify this, we wrote a note about what we have done during this Ludum Dare and our âpost-mortemâ, which is a little retrospective of our work.

Hi everybody!
This week log is gonna be light. Indeed, weâve got a lot of extra work to do aside from the games (business appointments, family issues,...), and the only game things that have progressed cannot be showed :/
But even though, the editor progressed pretty well:
The settings of the squirrel game have progressed too, but they canât be showed for the moment.
Ludum Dare
Aside from this, we will participate to the Ludum Dare, from 15th to april 18th. For those who do not know it, it is a game jam, a kind of contest consisting in creating a video game in a limited amount of time with an forced theme.
The three of us will participate in the team jam, which lasts 72h.

Salut Ă tous !
Le log de cette semaine sera assez léger ! En effet, nous avons eu pas mal de choses à gérer en dehors des jeux (Rendez-vous avec la CCI, rendez-vous business, rendez-vous famille...), ou alors les choses sur lesquels on travaille pour les jeux ne sont pas encore montrables :/
Par exemple on a encore bossĂ© sur lâĂ©diteur :
On a aussi bossĂ© sur les dĂ©cors du jeu de lâĂ©cureuil, mais rien de montrable pour le moment.
Ludum Dare
A part ça, nous participerons au Ludum Dare cette fois encore, du 15 au 18 avril 2016. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, il sâagit dâune game jam. Une game jam est un genre de concours oĂč on doit imaginer et dĂ©velopper un jeu sur un thĂšme imposĂ© en un temps limitĂ© : 48h en solo et 72h en Ă©quipe.
Comme dâhabitude, nous opterons pour la jam, 72h en Ă©quipe donc.

Here comes the weekly devlog! The end of time didn't hit us yet, so let's keep on working :)
The Squirrel Game
Nothing to show in term of development progress. This week, the focus was on the level editor. We try to make it perfect, so it takes some times ^^ The idea is to make a level editor we could use for all our future games, no matter what kind of game it will be.
Want a little glimpse?
So, in the middle, there is the game playing in the editor. Below it, in black, there is the console output, used mainly for debugging. ANd on the left, the entity list.
What's an entity, you ask?
It is an object in the game. Everything is an entity : the birds, the basket, the squirrel, the llama. And an entity can be composed by several other entity. For example, the level is an entity composed by all the entities inside it. The basket is an entity that contains the two birds. The llama is composed of an entity for the head and another one for body, to allow the head to move freely aside from the body.
In short, everything is an entity. Each entity has a list of properties (that's what will be displayed in the "inspector" part, on the right, but it is not finished yet :p). Those properties tell the game engine the behaviour of the entity.
For example, if an entity has the property "Sprite", the engine knows that it will have to display a sprite at the entity coordinates.
Another property could be a behaviour script. Like "look at the squirrel and shoot at it". If this behaviour is attached to the llama's head, boom, it begins to shoot at the squirrel!
This property can be attached to anything, like the ground. And the ground would begin to shoot at the squirrel! But that would be a little weird, right?
Anyway, this entity thing is a convenient and interesting way of developping the game, because if a certain number of properties are created, new complex entities can be created without touching the code at all! Any entity can be created just by addind the needed property and that's it! :)
There is still a lot of work on the editor, but once it is done, creating new games should be way faster than today, as only the specific parts of the gameplay would be left to code.

Super Miam Miam Ultra
Unfortunately, there is nothing new to show this week. New graphic assets and new musics have been created (but it is still secret stuff), and the whole team had a reflection on how to integrate all the new things into the game, in terms of animation. We are all looking for the game to be released! At this time, we will be able to show you story boards, or alternative assets that wouldn't have been integrated in the game and stuff.
Speaking of release, we do everything to finish the game by end of april. We know that a month is a lot of time, but a part of the team will leave for holidays soon and it will stop the game development for a while. During this cut though, the rest of the team will work on another game of which we will speak soon :)

Et voici le post hebdomadaire ! La fin des temps nâest pas encore arrivĂ©e, alors on continue de bosser :)
Le jeu de écureuil
Au niveau du dev, toujours pas de progrĂšs visible sur le jeu car on a surtout bossĂ© sur lâĂ©diteur de niveau. On fait ça bien, ça prend un peu de temps ^^ LâidĂ©e est de faire un Ă©diteur qui nous servira pour tous nos jeux par la suite, et ce, quelque soit le type de jeu sur lequel on bosse.
Un petit aperçu ?
Donc, on a au milieu le jeu qui tourne dans lâĂ©diteur, en dessous en noir, câest la zone dâaffichage des messages du jeu, pour le debug, câest pratique. A gauche câest la liste des entitĂ©s.Â
Quâest-ce quâune entitĂ© ?Â
Câest un objet dans le jeu, tout simplement. Tout est une entitĂ©. Les oiseaux, le panier, lâĂ©cureuil, le lama. Et une entitĂ© peut ĂȘtre composĂ©e dâautres entitĂ©s. Par exemple, le niveau est composĂ© de toutes les entitĂ© du niveau, le panier contient les deux oiseaux, et le lama est composĂ© dâune entitĂ© corps et une entitĂ© tĂȘte, ce qui permet de faire tourner la tĂȘte indĂ©pendamment du corps.
Bref, tout ce qui est dans le jeu est une entitĂ©. Mais ensuite, chaque entitĂ© possĂšde une liste de propriĂ©tĂ©s (câest ce quâon devrait voir dans la partie âinspectorâ Ă droite, mais câest pas fini :p). Ces propriĂ©tĂ©s indiquent au moteur de jeu comment doit se comporter lâentitĂ©.Â
Par exemple, si jâajoute la propriĂ©té âSpriteâ a mon entitĂ©, le moteur saura quâil devra afficher un sprite aux coordonnĂ©es de lâentitĂ©.Â
Une autre propriĂ©tĂ© pourrait ĂȘtre un comportement. Comme par exemple âregarde lâĂ©cureuil et tire lui dessusâ. On ajoute ce comportement Ă la tĂȘte du lama et boum, il nous crache dessus.Â
On pourrait trĂšs bien mettre ce comportement sur nâimporte quelle entitĂ© du jeu, genre sur le sol. Ăa marcherait : le sol nous cracherait dessus, mais ça serait un peu bizarre.Â
Bref, câest une façon de faire assez intĂ©ressante car Ă partir du moment oĂč on a un nombre important de propriĂ©tĂ©s codĂ©es, on peut crĂ©er de nouveaux objets complexes dans le jeu sans pour autant avoir Ă se pencher sur le code. On ajoute juste les propriĂ©tĂ©s quâon veut pour lâobjet et ça marche :)
Bon, il y a encore un peu de boulot sur lâĂ©diteur, mais aprĂšs, normalement, on devrait aller super vite pour crĂ©er un jeu puisqu'il ne restera vraiment que les parties ultra spĂ©cifiques au gameplay Ă coder.
Sinon, coté musique, notre compositeur a mis en ligne la musique dont on vous parlait la semaine derniÚre :

Super Miam Miam Ultra
Malheureusement, nous ne pouvons toujours rien vous montrer sur le jeu. De nouveaux assets graphiques et de nouvelles musiques ont Ă©tĂ© créés, et on sâest concertĂ© sur la façon dont les nouveautĂ©s vont pouvoir sâimbriquer, visuellement parlant, avec lâexistant. On a super hĂąte de sortir le jeu ! On pourra alors vous montrer des story boards, ou des assets alternatifs qui auraient pu ĂȘtre utilisĂ©s et tout.
Dâailleurs, on compte sortir le jeu fin avril. Câest vrai, ça paraĂźt long un mois, mais certains membres de lâĂ©quipes partent en vacances bientĂŽt donc il y aura fatalement une coupure dans la progression du jeu. Durant cette coupure, les membres restant avanceront sur un autre jeu dont on vous reparlera bientĂŽt :)

A new week begins, already... time flies! This week : music, Super Miam Miam, and the game with no name.
Musics
At the moment we only showed you stuff, but we just reallized we could also make you listen to stuff. Internet is amazing. So here are two songs wrote by Hibouch for our no name game :

With those two musics, I think you start to guess the universe we choose for our game ;). Those are only first test though, and will probably change until release. Like everything we showed you actually!
Musics for Super Miam Miam are on the way as well, but itâs to early to let you enjoy those :)
Super Miam Miam Ultra
The Bonus level is progressing well. Sadly, as it is a âbonusâ level, we canât show you too much as it would spoil the surprise. But we canât wait to release the game so you can play it. We hope youâll enjoy playing it as mush as we enjoyed making it!
Maybe we can talk about workflow for once. To have a clear sight of the work that remains to be done, we built up a Trello board with an exhaustive list of what is left to do. For those who don't know Trello, it's a great web tool bases on the Agile Scrum method. You could find some links about this at the end of this post, if you're interested in it.
The game with no name
Nothing visually change on the code side, but it works better. Well, thatâs what the dev said... To make us believe he is working, he at least made a little enemy test, whith beautiful dev graph.

After seeing this gif, someone proposed âhomerun squirrelâ as a name for our game. Why not ?
On the graph side, a lot of new animations ! The squirrel is alive, we are happy :)
Flying nuts are the tastiest. Every squirrels know it!

Hello everyone,
A new week begins, wich means itâs time for ou weekly log!
This week, we made some new graph for Super Miam Miam Ultra and some sketchs for âthe squirrel gameâ!
Super Miam Miam Ultra
The game development is going well, but we still have some work to do before the release.
We have a few new assets*, itâs way easier now to distinguish the good ânum numâ from the bad ânum numâ !
The bonus level is taking shape as well, with some easter eggs that youâll have to find.
"The squirrel game"
We still have no name for this game, we want to see the game to evolve quick, no time for those futilities (yet) !. We will find a name later though, the time will come.
As the squirrel is taking shape, weâre working on its environment and enemies.Â
Sprite sheets are being integrated. Our developperâs squares finally have a face. There is now some animation, making the game more alive, and we really appreciate that!

Nouvelle semaine, déjà ⊠que le temps passe vite... Au programme : musique, Super Miam Miam et le jeu sans nom.

Jusquâici, on nâa fait que vous montrer des trucs, mais on sâest rendu compte quâon pouvait Ă©galement vous en faire Ă©couter. DĂ©cidĂ©ment, internet, câest gĂ©nial. Voici donc sans plus tarder deux morceaux composĂ©s par Hibouch pour le jeu sans nom :

Avec ces deux morceaux, je pense que vous commencez Ă cerner lâunivers quâon a choisi pour notre jeu ;). Ce ne sont que des premiers essais toutefois et ils vont sĂ»rement Ă©voluer dâici la sortie du jeu. Comme tout ce quâon vous montre en fait !
Les musiques pour Super Miam Miam Ultra sont aussi en cours de crĂ©ation, mais câest encore trop tĂŽt pour vous en faire profiter :)

Le niveau bonus avance bien. Malheureusement, comme il sâagit justement dâun niveau âbonusâ, on ne peut rien vous montrer. Mais on a hĂąte que vous puissiez y jouer, et on espĂšre que ça vous fera marrer autant que nous !
Sinon, on peut peut-ĂȘtre parler mĂ©thodologie un peu. Pour bien se rendre compte du travail quâil nous reste Ă faire, on sâest montĂ© un Trello avec une liste exhaustive des tĂąches Ă effectuer. Pour ceux qui connaissent pas, câest un super outil en ligne qui reprend la base de la mĂ©thode Agile Scrum. On vous a mis quelques liens Ă la fin du post si ça vous intĂ©resse.
Le jeu sans nom
Du cotĂ© du code, rien ne change visuellement, mais ça marche mieux. Enfin ça, câest ce que le dev dit⊠Pour nous faire croire quâil travaille, il a quand mĂȘme fait un petit test dâennemi, avec de super graphisme de dev.
Pour info, câest un lama. Si si, regardez bien !
Du coup, suite Ă ce gif, quelquâun nous a proposé âHomerun Squirrelâ pour le nom. Et pourquoi pas ?
Coté graphismes, pas mal de nouvelles animations ! L'écureuil prend vie, on est content :)
Les noisettes volantes sont les meilleures. Tous les écureuils le savent !
