I'm fully aware of all the horrible things he did, but his love is one constant that is undeniable. He never asks for anything for himself, never wanted anything for himself, and loved Sasuke without conditions. More than anyone else in the world.

He would take time out of his busy schedule to spend it with Sasuke. He wanted to keep him away from all the politics and mess, because he was dragged into it by the adults, and nobody had been there to save him.

He wanted Sasuke to live because he'd seen death so close at such a young age that he thought it would be the worst thing to happen to someone.

His love for Sasuke was so deep, it was painful. Like, all the things he did were because of that love. And when he saw his decisions were bad and affected Sasuke from how he'd hoped, he didn't try to defend himself or justify himself.

He left again, telling Sasuke no matter what he did, he would always have Itachi's love, and that was the greatest expression of his unconditional love. It didn't matter that Sasuke would destroy whatever he'd sacrificed protecting. Whatever path Sasuke chose, whatever way he chose to live, his love would always be a constant in Sasuke's life.

In the anime, I love this precisely because of that. Itachi wouldn't agree with Sasuke's decision to take the hate of the world and become a dictator so the world could stay peaceful, he would still support Sasuke, because that's what he was supposed to do. If the whole world stood against Sasuke, then Itachi would be against the whole world.
