[Re-reading As Meat Loves Salt] Ch. 19 Possession
Obviously, the honeymoon phase is 😚👌 giddy Jacob and superflirtatious Ferris with his double entendre jokes~~ I can't recall if Ferris coming out as an atheist has any effect on how Jacob sees him. I don't think he cares, but he sees, for a second, what it'd be like to live outside the cage he's built himself (and built by others) with religion. The freedom of there not being a Hell and to only be what one makes of oneself. But I think the way Jacob thinks is too ingrained, and was ingrained in ways that Jacob only alludes to, and maybe doesn't remember.
So, one thing I've always wondered about was Jacob being in the kitchen while Ferris comforts aunt, and having "a thought occur to him" and immediately start looking for lube, on his second night as a lover of a man, mind. At first, I thought, maybe that's for the reader's benefit, to not take them out of the honeymoon phase too much, y'know, here's lube, Ferris is okay despite biiig size difference, because trust Jacob to make the situation a bit not great with his ramblings about women being weak and swept away by their passions and impulses (meanwhile I'm thinking "that's you, bro") and fixating on whether Ferris has done this before and wanting to kill Nathan again. BUT it started with Ferris greasing the thingy on the printing press, and Jacob asking him to wash it off because he hates the smell, and then, mid-sex he has a similar thought about the goose grease, the smell unnerves him. I feel like it's saying something, but I don't know what. Overall, Jacob gives us a lot of smell info, he loves how Ferris smells, Jacob turns into Hannibal Lecter on that front with how much he was to be sniffing him, he tells us about the insane smells out in London, in the army, the shit pit, foods, perfumes etc. but I don't think he's ever said out loud about hating the smell of something. Let alone mentioning it twice. And how would he know enough to consider lube? This same guy who saw a woman stand in the doorway in "daring pink" in the rain when everyone else had gone in, and thought "must be vanity" just a few pages ago. Also, in the Ferris coming out as atheist scene, at the end of it, Jacob tries to shock himself by describing their relationship in a scandalous way, and he calls himself a "fornicator of unnatural appetite" but there has been nothing to suggest that he's hornier than anyone else. He's attracted to Ferris, and in love with him, Ferris is surprised that Jacob isn't going through an existential crisis about the change in their relationship, and Jacob doesn't seem disturbed by the fact that he's in love with a man, his problem is sex as a means of power, maybe his only mean of power despite his violence elsewhere. He thinks it's a way to forever engrave yourself in someone. Who taught him that? Did he reach this conclusion himself? Bottom=woman=possession via penetration? Anyway, the grease could be something, or maybe it isn't. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

THEY MAKE SO ILL WITH THEIR SHENANIGANS!!!!
THE NOTES, THE MISCOMMUNICATION AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS, THE CUTTING HIS HAIR, THE OFFERING AND THE HAND-HOLDING, THE LETTER GDI THE LETTER😭
There's so much to talk about. The opening of the chapter, with Jacob thinking he's taken a beating from his dad for something as inconsequential as a little doodle in a book. Can you imagine the punishment for anything beyond a doodle? The man was petrified, and then relieved that he wasn't at home only to realize where he was and what he'd done. Shame and dread is what he runs on. He was also out of it for a bit after getting knocked out, and if his dad did similar things to him, it might explain why he doesn't remember certain things or misremembers them, like after him and Ferris reconcile he thinks "I had never before hurt Ferris; he now felt the possibility of my doing it again" and he probably means that he's never drawn blood before, but like, guy, c'mon, you pulled a knife on him, and didn't even know it, but I'm pretty sure Ferris thought it over plenty when it happened.
Jacob breaks my heart with the way he tries to rise above his love and adoration for Ferris. Constantly thinking he should leave, or that he was going to be asked to leave, and why wouldn't he leave, nothing's keeping him, but at the same time is like "Whatever he wanted, as long as I was there to share it," and "To the colony I should go, and give my best for it, and live kindly with my companions so that Ferris should see my worth." And Ferris too!😭 His falling out with his aunt, knowing exactly why she wanted Jacob to marry Becs. And then Jacob asking Ferris to decide!
Shoutout to Jacob and Ferris's passive aggressive bickering, and the callbacks of earlier dialogues in later ones like they both have their conversations on loop in their heads when they're not talking to each other.
That was how I first went to him.
THEY MAKE ME ILLLLL😫🤌

[Re-reading As Meat Loves Salt] Ch. 17 Brothers and Sisters
What a day. Started with Halfman episode four. So really, I'd already had my fill of toxic, codependent, violent mlms, and now chapter 17 of As Meat Loves Salt, with all of its tension and build-up and explosion. Jacob biddable no more. I like how much Jacob dislikes Rowly. He makes such funny observations about people that rub him the wrong way. He kept it together for a fairly long time, but when he lost it---god, Jacob. "I was calm while I curb-stomped this fella smack in the middle of the living room" not an actual quote, just slightly rephrased. What I like about this chapter is how it feels like one of those events you know is gonna end with the cops at the door. You don't know how, or why you feel you gotta go even if you don't want to, you just know it's gonna go sideways. Could it be that when Jacob's self-loathing reaches its peak, that's when he's on the trigger? One word, and boom, disaster. He was already upset about biddable, about not being able to control his attraction to Ferris, then aunt reminds him he owns nothing, and would be happier in London, and him staying would make Ferris stay, then Ferris runs off with a piece of paper that concerns him but keeps it from him, gotta spend the evening with a man who's been cruising for a bruising for a long time---it's also interesting to me how Jacob puts Joanna on a pedestal, or to speak ill of her is to speak ill of Ferris, but like a bit worse. It's like Ferris's love for her deified her in Jacob's eyes. Although, when Philip called Ferris Mistress Lily, Jacob squared up, but Philip was smart enough to run.
Also, love how playfully mocking and charmingly scary Jacob was with Rowly before it kicked off. From the second he opened the door. Cannot wait for the aftermath!
[Re-reading As Meat Loves Salt] Ch. 16 Hope
[KICKS FEET] So much deliciousness in this chapter! First things first, the quest to understand what's going on with Jacob: maybe some sort of OCD? In that moment, where he almost tells Ferris what ails him, the Voice, he thinks of how it shows him foul pictures aside from speaking to him, and maybe that'd fall under intrusive thoughts? In Eng lit class, a prof told the class to not try to diagnose characters. This was in a class discussion about Kafka's The Hunger Artist, and we were talking about eating disorders and the like, but that lead us down paths that muddled the point of the story, which is part of why he told us not to diagnose, but idk, Jacob brings it out of me even if I'm underqualified to be diagnosing anybody with anything. I wanna tell Jacob to sit tight because we're gonna google his symptoms, draw conclusions for a diagnosis and get him the meds he needs😶
I wonder what Ferris could've done with that info though. Does he have a book on ailments of the mind hidden somewhere? He tried to help with the salvation thing by telling Jacob he was saved long ago. Maybe the Voice would've just confused him more. But damn, Jacob was so close to telling him, just the fact he even considered it is so huge.
Love when possessive Ferris makes an appearance, I'm sure I've said it before. The burning of the letter, Jacob recognizing something off about him, maybe a darkness he's already familiar with.
The opening of the chapter is also just so, soooo, just so----to Jacob it's obvious that where Ferris goes, he will follow, like that's in stone to him, much like he thought being an Elect was in stone now that he had that nirvana moment, but at the end of the chapter, all the stuff about Elect and Grace has gone out the window, but he still follows Ferris, even with everything that's happening inside him, the push and pull, the temptations, the attempts to deny himself, the stumbling from one "snare" to another. Don't like how Jacob fixates on Ferris calling him biddable though. At the same time, why even say that?🥲

[Re-reading As Meat Loves Salt] Ch. 15 Broken Men
The descriptions of London are so gross. Bubbling animal carcasses on the streets, yu-uuck! Can only imagine the smell of the Thames to be that of the water in Venice in really rough summers, or you know what, also certain spots in Stockholm when the waters are unnaturally hot and it smells like a ginormous fish broil seasoned with all hellspawn that the ocean is contaminated with. It'll try to knock the breakfast clean out of your guts, lemme tell ya.
As a huge fan of voices, I love that Jacob describes Ferris's voice and braids Zeb's voice in there too. For you, me, when you inevitably come back to read this:
"He pronounced the words wonderingly, as if granted a vision of divine light and overpowered with its sweetness, even at times with a little catch in his throat, when, looking around, I would see a glitter in his eye that might be a tear. Zeb, I thought, had a softer way of speaking, more beguiling, but this halting, passionate way of Ferris's made it impossible for a friend to break in upon him. I had heard him only once before with this ache in his voice, and that was when he had told me how he rescued Joanna out of her bondage and brought her safe home."
Also, insane how he worked Joanna in there considering Everything. It works so well, not only for The Thing, but also for how Jacob reads Ferris later when aunt's back and they're lowkey quarreling. Jacob thinks Joanna is in the room, but Ferris must be thinking whether it's a good idea to put the Secret to use or not. Hopefully, the way I'm writing right now will make sense to me later on too. I just don't know whether my posts are still marked as a reread or not and how spoilers might come across to an imagined future reader of this book who'll somehow end up on this forum to skim through my ramblings. I know what's gonna happen and that informs how I understand the book now.

saw an inspiring video that said you need to have 4 hobbies.
create, consume, cavort, commune
create: bring something to life consume: appreciate the art of another cavort: move your body daily commune: have a community to socialize with
end image description.
I think you need hobbies that do all four things but the number of hobbies needed to cover all these needs may vary. Some hobbies pull double/triple duty. Some hobbies can cause repetitive stress injuries so it's good to have a few different ones that fulfill the same need so you can rotate to get the fulfillment without the carpal tunnel.
Tumblr really is aging.
This is true tho.
Misread this as 'you need to have 4 hobbits'
also true! there’s a really famous three-volume self-help guide about that!
unless all you’re doing is liberating a single mountain from a dragon, in which case you can probably get by with just one, so long as you also have a lot of dwarves.
The exchange rate is three dwarves to one hobbit, if anyone was wondering
And I get 4 dwarves and a wizard left over let's fucking go!

Holy moly they're GOOD. The music is fucking FIRE, and the outfits??? They're all so PRETTY???
Does anybody know who these are??? Do they have albums!! 🤩🤩🤩
I was so curious that I had to go find this band. They're called Fortress Dwellers and they have a website with all of their socials!
They released an album too! I don't think this song is on it but the rest of their stuff is SO GOOD !!

I think fanfiction as a medium is different enough from mainstream literature in the tools it offers writers that it's a shame that it's not talked about more often. And it's not me saying "fanfic is better than books xD" because that sort of mindset is a symptom of people who aren't particularly well read in either medium. I'm just speaking of like... The little things you get to do with a fanfic that you genuinely can't really do in an original story.
I had a big fanfic in a previous fandom where one of the big reveals was the involvement of a kind of infamous villain, whose presence was built up to and foreshadowed through the whole fic until his reveal without ever mentioning his name, so that the name drop would be a gut punch. It worked especially well because of who the villain was and his presence in that fandom space specifically (it's very complicated) and if it was an original story this reveal wouldn't work at all the way it was written in the fic. Because if you don't have a predisposition to think about that character and his relationship to the hero in a very specific way, then just seeing their name won't do much to you; the reveal and the recontextualisation it pushes upon you hinges on your previous knowledge of the source material.
I think it's an interesting tool fanfic authors are given. One of my favorite fanfic of all time is partially a re-imagining of its source material's canon, and something it does is introduce antagonists much earlier in the story or deepen npcs' stories. It then works to evoke a tragic irony that again wouldn't work if you didn't know the source material, and it's something the author obviously has a lot of fun with.
You could call it cheap or a crutch and I mean, yeah, sure, it is a little bit: the fanfic relies on previously established emotional bonds and stakes to achieve its goal, and in some cases it saves the author from having to 'properly' build up its stakes. But I think it's INTERESTING that it has that tool at its disposal. I think it's a fun thing to play with and I think these built in expectations and emotional bonds are especially why I find story driven aus in particular to be fascinating in the amount of ways you can play with them. You know??
