.⋆₊ᨦ starting the gym ᨩ ໋₊⋆.
after a few months doing yoga (3 months on and off + 3-ish months consistently twice a week) i think i’ve build enough muscle to be able to safely go to the gym!
in case u’re new here, i started yoga five months and a half ago to treat my hypermobility. because of it, i had barely any muscle and i struggled with every physical activity imaginable. if you want a better grasp of my progress, u can check out my last yoga diary entry in my blog! which i’ll actually be updating soon ( ◜ᴗ◝)シネ
in july i’ll be going to brasil to stay with my family and i’ll start the gym there! it’s cheaper and really close to my grandparents’ home, which will probably help me with staying consistent. initially i wanted to keep doing yoga there, but it would be farther away and getting used to new places and routes can be really stressful for me.
.⋆₊ ᨦ my goals & expectations ᨩ ໋₊⋆.
i have a few different goals, for health and aesthetics. mostly, i already saw a lot of physical changes only from yoga, so i’m really excited to see how things are going to change at the gym.
my dad offered to accompany for the first week to make sure i won’t injure myself (shout out dad). i’m sure he’d love to go with my for the length of my vacation, but considering that he doesn’t live in the city my maternal grandparents live, it’d be rather inconvenient. but after the first week, i’ll take my bf with me ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝
i struggle a lot with my arms, not only due to my hypermobility but also because when i was 10 i broke my left elbow and it never really healed right. a few years ago my mom tried bringing me along to the gym with her and i couldn’t do any bicep exercises without feeling a lot of pain in my left elbow. however, tricep exercises were okay!
i want to find exercises that don’t put too much pressure on my elbow. currently when i squeeze my arm, beneath a soft layer of fat, i can only feel bone ( ・ᯅ・ ) my arm doesn’t look bony or anything because i have a very healthy layer of fat, but i’d really appreciate some muscle to avoid osteoporosis in the future.
and as for my shoulders, my physiotherapist had said that i need to be extremely careful with them. so i’ll probably start only with the machine and no weights to focus on my form, which is what he had me do when i went there weekly.
my tummy used to be really super duper soft, now when i poke it i can feel muscle beneath! my goal will be getting more muscle and hopefully help with tapering my ribs as they have a bit of a flare since there’s not much holding them in place. though, i’ve already seen a lot of improvement with yoga.
my butt is a bit bigger and firmer than before, and i want to stay consistent with this progress! but when i tried going to the gym with my mom, leg presses put a lot of pressure on my knees and i wouldn’t feel anything on my bum or thighs only on my knees. so i want to find other exercises that i can do comfortably!
i want to be one of those stair master warriors. my friend who goes to the gym a lot, said the stair master is particularly challenging, but i really want to try! i also want to start running on the treadmill.
i hope my posts inspire other people to also take care of their health, as someone who’s always struggled with physical activity and seeing any progress, i think that if i had seen people like me getting better i would’ve started earlier.
that being said, please don’t compare ur journey to mine. i am very young at 18 and at a healthy weight for my height (despite having abnormally low muscle mass and high fat percentage). paradoxically, despite my health conditions, i have really good genetics for muscle growth on my dad’s side. so if you don’t see progress as fast as i did, or if you struggle with things that i don’t anymore, please keep in mind that people have different bodies, and will see progress at different rates and levels. it doesn’t mean u’re failing or doing anything wrong!
