I was always struck by the fact that Jinu brought his family to the palace, so it's implied that he didn't leave them on purpose, as Jinu himself said, but that he brought his family to the palace with him and wanted them to live in the palace away from poverty, but when he realized they couldn't enter with him, he simply let the guards close the gates and lock them out. Jinu's act of selfishness wasn't going to the palace alone without his family and deliberately abandoning them, but bringing them with him but not fighting or trying to do anything to get them to live in the palace with him when it was made clear that only he could enter.
That's why his sacrifice is so great because Jinu is not only overcoming his flaw by selflessly protecting Rumi but he's also fighting and trying to protect someone he loves just like he should have done with his family.
I've been thinking this, too. Because what was the point, story wise, to show the family being barred from the palace and Jinu's hand slipping from his sister's grip? It was to show that Jinu didn't fight for them. That imagery was pivotal for his final scene, because he throws his whole body between Rumi and Gwi-Ma.
I'd love to hear thoughts on this as well, but I found it interesting how Jinu's way of fighting back wasn't fighting at all but protecting. He never raised a weapon against Gwi-Ma (unless you want to count the symbolism of Rumi's sword *wink wink*). Instead, he used his body and his life, as he was—a demon—to protect Rumi. It reversed the power Gwi-Ma had over him and Jinu was able to free his soul. I also thought it was deeply satisfying that he chose to be a protecter for Rumi afterwards: "You gave me my soul back... and now I give it to you."
The first choice he made with his freewill after being a slave to Gwi-Ma was to become a guardian for Rumi. I would have loved to see Jinu physically fight Gwi-Ma in that final scene, though I have considered the possibility that it would have lessened the symbol of his sacrifice. What I mean by that is, fighting Gwi-Ma (hatred for him) was not the answer. Not for Jinu, anyway. Jinu's path had to do with him reaching out to protect, to choose love over hatred. And he did that. It was Rumi's and Huntrix's place to stand off against Gwi-Ma.
Once Jinu's soul was purified and released, though, he became a part of Rumi's sword. I know this is currently conjecture among fandom, but I happen to agree with it 100%. It makes symbolic sense.

Everyone talking about Tangled! Rujinu….but what about role reversal Herculese! Rujinu? Rumi trying to become a true Hunter like her mother by becoming a K-Pop star and turning the Honmoon gold. Then she can lose her patterns and finally belong among the rest of the Hunters. But the evil demon king Gwi-ma learns of a prophesy that Rumi will indeed turn the Honmoon gold and be the cause of his defeat, so he sends in his charming servant Jinu to lead her astray…?
Brisk Walk: 6 to 6.5km/h or 3.5 to 4 mph. Walking at a pace fast enough that you could still talk but not sing, and keeping up a conversation isn't easy.
Reminder that our girl didn't just walk to a nearby location. She power walked 2.5km (1.62 miles) in the dark, in the rain, through cross-country terrain for close to half an hour just to kiss Tyler.
I've probably said this before but... I love how Rumi just being who she was is ultimately what inspired Jinu to fight back and claim his autonomy (her calling her best friends back from the brink of destruction was such a powerful moment, and Zoey was right... they couldn't win without her voice). When they hugged one another, the power of that love radiated outwards and Jinu witnessed it. Rumi did that. She loved her family ((and herself)) enough to take that leap of faith. He was too scared, insecure and confused to save his family, and he'd been ashamed of it for 400 years. Deep down Jinu didn't feel worthy enough. Then, he sees Rumi walking toward him with her family, self-aligned and in her power.
I also love how it was Jinu who planted the seeds of self-acceptance in Rumi, even if incidentally. He was on the opposing side and also experiencing emotional conflict around her, but that was the very thing needed to create her awakening. He planted those seeds originally to fan the flames of her shame, but she did something he never expected. She accepted who she was, because what was happening between them (the undercurrent of their true feelings) couldn't be faked or stopped. Jinu could lie to Rumi about doing what he did to gain her trust, yet she knew better. He had told her his secret, too, his shame. Even if he'd lied about it at first, Rumi still told him, "That's just your demon talking. You have to fight it." Ironically, Jinu and Rumi were both right and wrong in that confrontation. When he shouted, "That's not how it works!" He was actually correct. It wasn't about fighting your demon, because your demon is a part of you. It was about forgiving yourself. But Rumi was also right. It was his demon of shame talking. It wasn't all of him. And Rumi believed in what she knew in her own heart. She had faith in it, hope. And nothing could take that from her. Not Jinu, not Gwi-ma, not even being abandoned by Zoey and Mira. All because Rumi understood that their shame wasn't all of them, and Zoey and Mira mattered to Rumi. She had faith in them. That is what made Jinu sacrifice himself for her... because she had faith in him, too. In his final act, he paid that hope back with hope of his own.

im back in the building 🚬🚬
I'm so obsessed with this ship SO MUCH😔
Me finally realizing how much this moment affected Jinu cuz that drawing...
Had to have hit him so deep in his chest. A young girl giving him such a thoughtful piece of art. A young girl so like his baby sister? Gut punch!
And come to think of it, that scene was where Jinu admitted to Rumi why he's even part of the Saja Boys to begin with. He wanted to erase his memories, so the voices in his head would be gone (which likely included his baby sister). Damn.... It hits different now. Ouch.
"I wanted to set you free." "You did. You gave me my soul back. Now, I give it to you."
