"i finished the cake, sister!" you announced proudly to Zelda, your older sister, showing her the dessert you had spent all your day doing. the sun has started going down by now.
"oh, so is this what you have been doing all day, dear?" she says affectively approaching you, looking impressed at the pastry. "it smells delicious! can i have a bite?"
"i'm sorry, i'll bake another one for you if you want, but this is for someone else..." you confess looking at the sky through the window, thinking about your special someone.
Zelda's expression darkened, millions of possibilities crossing her mind. a lover maybe?! no! no one deserved the pure and sweet heart of her beloved sister. who dared to try reach your heart?
"someone else?" Zelda asked with worrisome in her voice. "someone who?"
"ow, don't talk like that!" you whined recognizing the concern and possessiveness in her voice. "you know what? i'll keep it as a secret. just so you don't freak out." you told her playfully letting out a malicious giggle.
"no way! come back here, missy!" she yelled as you walked away from the royal kitchen through the castle's halls.
the sun was setting, painting the sky with its typical beautiful orange colours. the familiar figure of a blonde male walking out from the stables appeared in your visions. there he was!
"Link!" you called happily.
the man stopped abruptly in his tracks looking in your direction, a smile growing in his face, his eyes shining in pure love. he ran to your arms immediatly, lifting you in the air. you laughed like a child having fun, he laughed with you.
"were you going to our spot?" you asked grabbing both fo his strong arms with you hands, looking into his blue irises that you loved so much. he nodded in a 'yes'
the special spot both shared was a beautiful place in the forest beside a river with a great waterfall, with a natural path of small rocks at both ways leading to a large, flat rock in the center of themβa special place for you, because that's where you would play your favorite instrument: the harp. sometimes, you would sit there with Link resting on your lap, playing melodies that soothed him while the fresh breeze of the nightfall hit your faces.
as both walked through the trees holding hands while you asked him about his day and how he was feeling, the delicious smell of the cake was impossible to hide, catching his attention. he nodded at the direction of the basket you carried, humming in disconcert.
"oh, this?" is a surprise, you'll see." you told him playfully. he smiled now curious.
the familiar sound of the river found your ears, you crossed the natural bridge of rocks it had with little jums. once you got on the other side, you set everything up and sat with Link's head resting in the soft fabric of the long white dress that covered your legs.
"this... is a cake i did just for you. this very morning!" you took a blueberry cheesecake out of the basket, Link lifted up a bit, staring at the pastry in surprise. he took it in his hands, admiring the great creation you made; it was beautiful.
he put it aside for a moment and approached to your face even more.
"thank you, my flower." he whispered sweetly, caressing your cheek. he tucked a strand of your hair behind your ear and pushed his lips into yours in a warm loving kiss.
you loved kissing Link, he did it slow and kind, always being soft. you could notice all his love poured in them. you touched his hand, which was still on your cheek, a unique gesture between you and him in any situation. he seemed to love touching your face.
both separated from the kiss rubbing your noses delicately for a bit, then you moved away to take the cake and start serving it in a beautiful ceramic plate with some tea.
"please tell me what you think about it. okay?" you ask eagerly, hoping it would be of his liking⦠that, and that you really had a knack for baking since you wanted to dedicate more time to it.
Link nodded cutting a piece and munching it with hunger, you holded your breath for a moment, but the relief arrived the moment your loved young man face lit up pleased.
you smiled widely at him. "i'm really happy you liked it, my love." you said caressing his cheek to wich he pushed it yo your hand for more contact.
you took a piece tasting the delicious blueberries from your garden on top of the cake, it was worth it taking care of them for such a long time, just to see your beloved Link's smile.
"i've got a surprise for you too." he said putting his empty plate by his side.
"really? since when?" you asked energetically. after all, everytime Link prepared a surprise for you, it was something better than the last one. what could be better than the enourmous arrangement of magical flowers that never withered for your room? your favourite ones too, and new sets of astronomical instruments, because he knew how much you loved studying the stars. what could be better than that? you were so anxious and impatient to know!
"in some weeks." he whispered mocking the same thing you told him earlier, you giggled.
after a while, you packed everything from the small picnic into your basket and took your harp out. you had a much larger one in your room, you clearly couldn't carry it around as you wished, so your father brought you a smaller, portable one, with the same shape and sounds as a normal harp. it was one of your most prized possessions.
you guided Link to the large, flat rock in the middle of the two rocky paths and sat with him on your lap, admiring the setting sun. he closed his eyes the moment you began to play one of your favorite melodies, which had also become his own, enjoying the closeness with you: his beloved girl, and the breeze on his face. a perfect place to fall asleep.
you giggled softly noticing the expression he always made when he was about to fall asleep.
"come on, sleepyhead." you called out brushing his soft golden hair with your fingers. "don't fall asleep now, we can do it together later."
he opened his eyes slowly, looking at you interested, a hint of doubt in them debating whether to give up his nap now and take it with you instead later. he gave it up, because it wouldnt be possible anyways, so he had to spent the most time possible with you. he smiled softly lifting up to look directly at you, some flowers growing on the moss of the rcok were blooming, he cut one and put it in your hair at the end of a small braid he had made.
both stayed like that for a while longer until the sky darkened, sunlight was weak, it was time to return.
after leaving the forest behind and arriving at the castle, you squeezed your beloved's hand even tighter. you didn't want him to leave tonight; you were serious when you told him you could sleep together. he noticed.
you separated from Link for a moment as he made you a signal you to wait for him, he had to report himself. in that moment of solitude, Zelda caught up with you.
"darling! there you are!" she said hugging you tightly, you hugged her back affectionately, you knew she must be worried.
"i was outside the whole afternoon, sis." you said gifting her a smile.
"with Link, right?" she asked, her overprotectiveness surfacing again. "sis, are you meeting with him? is he trying to reach your heart? i saw both of you running to the forest! why didn't you told me? what has he said to you?"
"Zelly, calm down!" you answer playfully. "please, don't worry like this so much. yes, i love him, and he has loved me for a long time. i didn't told you because i know how you get with these topics, but you know the sweetness of Link's heart just like i do. i know you worry about my heart being hurt, but you know that's the last thing Link would ever do to me."
Zelda looked away, it was just difficult for her. the sister she loved with all her heart, the same one she had carried in her arms for so long and cared for so diligently, was beginning to face one of the most dangerous things in the world: love. the last thing she wanted was to see her suffer over something that extinguished people's light when it went wrong, but you were partly right. she knew Link; he was a great friend, with a noble heart and soul. someone like that would always protect her little sister and undoubtedly bring her happiness.
she looked at you again, she knew some things changed in life, and it was time to accept that his beloved sister too. you hugged eachother again, this time, Zelda was calm.
"i trust he will make you the happiest woman alive."
with that, she left you alone again in your wait for Link. he appeared again, with some things of his knight clothing missing. upon reaching your chambers, you paused at the door, gazing into each other's eyes. you could see his desire not to leave, to stay even longer. but what could he do? he was a knight, the guardian of both princesses, nothing more in the eyes of others. he couldn't simply mingle with either of them. but that couldn't matter to you anymore.
you held both his hands tighter, refusing to let him go. "please, stay with me tonight."
Link shook his head, but a resistance flickered in his eyes. his voice didn't sound either. he knew he couldn't, it was forbidden.
his whispers were so normal to you now, even though he preferred to remain silent; you made him want to talk. with you, he could express himself; you made it so easy.
"at least for tonightβ¦" you said once more, your eyes shining, small tears threatening to spill.
you knew that although he was your and your sister's guard, he sometimes had to do many other things being the son of a great knight who had passed away. he carried great responsabilities. while he was away, neither you nor your sister traveled, so you anxiously awaited his safe return from the missions he was sent on. you didn't see him for weeks, and that saddened your heart. you wanted him to stay, because tomorrow he was going on one and wouldn't be back for a while, again.
Link bit his lip; he could never really tell you 'no', so he accepted, ending waiting for you in the edge of your large bed, looking at the dim blue lights on your ceiling, some fireflies fluttered slowly. you were finishing getting yourself ready to sleep with your nightgown on and a calm shower.
"now you can sleep as much as you want." you said throwing yourself towards him in a hug and pushing him onto the bed. you settled in such a way that your face rested on his sculpted chest, feeling his calm breathing and hugging him. his fingers gently combed your hair; he could feel sleep beginning to overtake him, so before closing his eyes, he mumbled sweet words.
"i love you, my sweet fairy..."
you pause for a moment, smiling softly and lifting your gaze up, finding him asleep already.
"i love you more, my darling boy." you whispered, leaving a quick final small kiss in his lips.
you never thought you'd be in this situation with him. at first, you just saw him as a guard/possible friend and thought he'd end up falling for Zelda since they were closer, but it all turned out the opposite: he eventually grew closer to you, falling for you first, and then you fell for him too. love does its things in strange ways, but sometimes those strange ways lead to precious happenings.
your souls were connected. you and him were something meant to last forever, to resonate through centuries, and to be repeated until the end of time.
