Have been working on this portrait commission for the last6 weeks. It’s a big piece, 2m high x 1.5 wide. Oil on canvas. It’s for the foyer of the Clifford Tower of Sydney Sanitarium Hospital and depicts Dr Herbert Clifford, after whom the Tower is named. Bert is one amazing 90 year old and a real character. He is an A.M., whose surgical expertise is internationally recognised by his Fellowship of the FRCS in both the UK and Australia. His achievements in both the development of Bioethics and building programs are too long to list here. It has been a real privilege to paint him and get to know both him and his wife, Doreen. They are very special people indeed. Primary school art class- year 5- they worked from 54 pieces of a poster that I’d cut up into squares- I gave them a faint outline so that they didn’t get wildly out of scale with one another- they observe colour and tone and use appropriate colour medium to convey the colours/tone/ shapes they see.
