Stunned silence has stolen over the Galactic Imperium of [Andromeda] in the aftermath of a bitter civil war but, on the outskirts of the Imperium, known as the Outer Rim, very little has changed.  Here, vicious pirates known as Reavers plunder and kill the crews of the few ships that dare to cross the dangerous stretch of empty space (between civilization and the Outer Rim), known as the Expanse.  It is in this dismal setting that envoys from two of the planets of the Outer Rim begin their fateful trek to SALAKAR, the Empire Planet, to meet with the Imperator.

ALTAIR OBERAN, Crown Prince of the planet ERYNDIA, has become engaged to Princess LENA VRANIAN of VORNMIR, but according to tradition before an alliance between two worlds may be legally enacted, the parties must first meet with the IMPERATOR to receive his blessing.  However, obtaining this meeting requires crossing the Expanse with all its dangers, both the Reavers and the strange astrological phenomena which make it notorious across the Imperium.

Though the envoys expect the Imperator to agree to the union of the two planets, events of which they know nothing will sway his choice.  A king has been forced to deliver his only weapon against oppression to his oppressors; a kidnapped scientist creates otherwise illegal experiments to keep his escaped family safe; a queen has been murdered to keep the secret quiet; and spies who do not even know they are spies proliferate the galaxy.  No one is safe…

cerise plays her cards v close to her chest…and keeping her secrets about her past are no exception

she keeps her secrets so well, in fact, that no one knows anything about her before she met RONAN KIEL

she was alone save for her little brother and fourteen and pregnant: soon giving birth to twins GRIFFIN and ILLYRIA

cerise’s history w the ship is longer than AXTON’s, and she and ronan are the only part of the original crew he kept on when he acquired the ship

most of the rest were lowlife criminals who drifted away or were fired by axton very soon

in contrast, however, he quickly promoted cerise to be his righthand and won her loyalty almost immediately

ofc, they still have their troubles…but, all in all, cerise believes in him and together they’re an effective team

the twins were born aboard this ship and they’ve never known another life and cerise would rather they keep it that way

a subject that causes some tension in the atara household from time to time

the world has chewed her up and spit her out - and cerise would do just about anything to protect them

for many years, cerise danced around the mutual feelings between herself and ronan, afraid to get hurt again

when she finally did relent, the happiest period of her life ensued and their little family felt complete, ronan having raised her kids after all

but when ronan started talking about marriage, something woke up in cerise and she began to withdraw and ultimately broke things off

illyria has lived here her whole life

she was born on this ship and she fears, if she doesn’t do something soon, she’ll die here too

unlike her brother, illyria can’t wait to leave this rusted bucket of parts far behind…or that is what she will tell you, anyway

the doing of the thing is so much harder esp bc illyria worries constantly about her family wo her: tho v different, they’re all far too headstrong

and she’s the only one w any real sense tho she has her moments, too, she’ll admit

she’s the older twin and she wiLL (try to) pull rank!! but her family is an issue: she knows nothing about her birth father…and she wants to know

it was better when CERISE was w RONAN bc he is also more levelheaded and illyria couldve trusted them to him…

but since her mom ended things w him, illyria’s the only one left

but that means she’s already blown one chance to get out and make something of her life for herself - can she risk loosing another chance?

illyria is part of the engineering crew and she’s quite brilliant and knows ALANDRA would like illyria to inherit her job but isn’t there more to life?

besides, illyria has other troubles, specifically her horrifically inconvenient feelings for DARIAN OBERAN

…which is definitely the most illogical thing she’s ever done or felt and she’d do just about anything to escape that

why bring unnecessary pain on herself when she knows it could never end up well w a prince?

griffin’s never known another life and honestly that doesn’t bother him one whit

he has no interest, for example, in unraveling the mystery that is his birth father or his mother’s past

born aboard this ship, he’s traveled across the imperium - and particularly this patch of space - his whole life and knows every star

while the lack of variety is a constant irritant for his twin, griffin has never found the days to be dull

but then, griffin is a reckless, mischievous, fast-talking swindler, gambler, and prankster…some of which are valuable traits in his line of work tbh

don’t let his antics fool you, griffin is sharp and wiLL try to get one over on you

he doesn’t mean any harm, that’s just life as he sees it and, more particularly, it’s part of the game which is what keeps life interesting

he’s also an equal opportunity prankster and just as likely to josh a royal as anyone else - much to AXTON JAGO’s consternation

but then, part of the impetus for this might be the huge crush he’s developed on THEA VRANIAN

and it’s nice to have an excuse to spend a little time w her…or better still, to make her laugh and smile

even tho he knows he’s cruising for trouble bc this can’t possibly end well, he doesn’t care - that’s all part of the excitement, anyway

adventuresome and loves to see new places and things!! but likes just as much getting to fly away and go somewhere new once it’s all over

taren’s attitude problems tend to get him into a lot of trouble, but doesn’t let him fool you: he might seem ornery but he’s a big softie on the inside

mostly, taren’s known for picking fights and throwing the first punch

admittedly, he’s got some anger issues but so does his sister and, in that no one knows anything about them before they showed up here…

well, there’s endless speculation, but in absence of facts, the only thing that can be established is that something bad happened

bc of this, some ppl give him a pass on his behavior, esp given his tendency to be kind to those who need it but that doesn’t make him easy

aside from his sister’s kids, the only ppl that he’s consistently nice to are ZELNA HUNTER and LYRA THRUSH

honestly taren’s been sweet on zelna for ages…but he would frankly rather die than admit that tbqh but if you make her cry he’ll kill you first

the other person, lyra, his partner and bff who’s kind to everyone and so he’s kind back…plus she won’t take his crap tbqh

his orneriness doesn’t always mean he hates you, tho, he honestly loves to bicker and argue

there’s no one he’d rather bicker with than ALANDRA…after all, he loves the entire crew like they’re his family!! but he and she irritate each other

taren has a propensity towards careless recklessness, a trait that, as pilot of the ship, has all kinds of ramifications

few have to deal w those ramifications so much as does engineering, however, which leads directly to confrontations w alandra

in truth, they argue so often no one on the crew even seems to notice it anymore - it’s just constant background noise

alandra’s life hasn’t been easy, but she’s drawn a world of lessons from that

she’s a survivor and, until recently, she had nothing left to loose, which has left her w a v tough exterior

in the years since she joined AXTON JAGO’s crew, however, her life has turned around entirely and, for all that she complains, this is her family

and if the crew is her family, this ship is her baby

she knows every pipe, every cord, every single detail of this ship and, sure ppl might call it garbage, but it wouldn’t go wo her

and she’s also made it the fastest piece of garbage in the galaxy: to insult the ship is to insult alandra and to hurt it…same deal

which is part of why she and TAREN ATARA argue so constantly…his reckless antics often leave blown fuses and shredded parts

and it’s always alandra left cleaning up those messes

atp, however, the pair argues so constantly, the rest of the crew seems to have stopped even hearing it…and nothing ever really changes

but maybe there’s part of alandra that’s ok w that…she likes having a rhythm and predictability for once in her life

alandra has loved RONAN KIEL desperately for years and years, and had to watch him love her best friend instead

she told herself it was fine and did her best to move on…but they’ve been broken up for awhile and ronan was ready to move on…

and finally, finally they’re together and alandra honestly couldn’t be more delighted tho she suspects he still harbors feelings for CERISE

ash doesn’t view himself as so v different from AXTON JAGO: both of whom own ships, run a crew, and forge a livelihood amongst the stars

ofc, axton’s business venture might be technically legitimate and his crew doesn’t consist of criminals, but those’re just details

there’s also ofc the fact that axton still has his ship and his crew intact and isn’t - as far as ash knows - a wanted man in disguise

but that just goes to show you that axton is, ultimately, far less interesting than ash, in ash’s own opinion

ash spent most of his life as a smuggler, ferrying stolen/illegal goods across the galaxy…and occasionally swindling and stealing himself

that all ended abruptly, however, when a lifetime of outrunning and outwitting the authorities finally caught up w him

determined to escape, ash did what he did best: smuggled himself out in an escape pod amongst a bunch of jettison

he doesn’t know what happened to his ship or crew, but he also 100% trusts that they’re all fine (even if possibly in jail) bc they’re all survivors

since then, ash changed his name to vyctor and he booked a job w axton here, hoping to get a lil cash and keep a low profile

that plan has backfired tho, however, given that no sooner did ash join up…than axton unaccountably signed on to escort royalty to the capitol

still, ash has always been good at improvising and lbr he wouldn’t be having fun if there weren’t just a little danger in it

for all this, tho, ash isn’t really a bad person: he’s impulsive and rebellious and snarky as all hell but he’s also confident and hardworking and smart
