so there’s this band i like.
these dudes all met at the university of michigan in ann arbor
and they quickly made a name for themselves with their unique music videos and incredible musicianship & songwriting
one of the guys directs all their videos, and has a flair for graphic design and creative editing
their live shows are amazing, full of absurd banter, beautiful improvised comedic moments, great cover songs, and switching instruments
not only are they all incredibly talented dudes, but you can tell that they’re totally BFFs off the stage as well
also, they’re all absolutely Adorable
right now you are probably like “YEAH WE GET IT, YOU LOVE TALLY HALL!” well, you’re definitely right, BUT— i’m not talking about tally hall!!!
i’m talking about VULFPECK:
vulfpeck is the third member of my personal HOLY BAND TRINITY (the other two being TH and JTG ofc). but unlike the other two, they’re not indie rock— they are a four-piece instrumental funk band, made up of:
jack stratton, the bandleader (keys, drums, guitar, songwriting)
theo katzman, who you may know from starkid/darren criss stuff (drums, guitar)
woody goss, ~mystery man~ (keys, songwriting)
joe dart, LITERAL BASS GOD (bass)
here they are in all their glory at the blind pig in april (L-R: woody, theo, jack, joe)
occasionally they add their pal joey dosik on sax or keys:
and their most popular songs are definitely the ones where they bring in a guest vocalist, like antwaun stanley:
you might have heard of vulfpeck last year when they launched their SLEEPIFY campaign— to fund their tour, jack stratton uploaded an entirely silent album to spotify and asked vulfpeck’s fans to stream it overnight while they slept. the strategy managed to generate $20,000 (!!!) for the band before spotify took it down. the sleepify announcement video jack made is a great introduction to vulfpeck’s unique combination of genius and hilarity:
vulfpeck’s music is a little bit less accessible than tally hall, but i honestly think that the overlap in process/vibe/talent/humor is more than enough to get anyone who’s fond of TH into these guys in a big way.
their channel has TONS of videos— live music videos for nearly every song, plus a whole lot of jack’s bizarro comedy shorts and various other musical/film projects. i highly, HIGHLY recommend just diving in and checking it all out.
also, there’s a bunch of live footage on youtube as well— this video from their chicago show on the sleepify tour is just. fucking transcendent tbh
TL;DR: if you love tally hall, definitely check out vulfpeck— different genre but the same type of good vibes.
………and if all that doesn’t convince you, GUESS WHO ELSE LOVES VULFPECK:

and to cap it all off, here is this glorious picture of jack stratton in his natural habitat for your viewing enjoyment.
