Okay, here's my final thesis video.
More than Messaging Improving Digital Communication through Collaborative Storytelling and Comics
Digital messaging offers convenient communication at the expense of emotional connection. The spontaneous and participatory nature of storytelling is fundamental to how we empathize with one another, but requires a flexibility and interactivity that is not currently present in digital communication. Our digital conversations are fragmented into shared moments and responses beholden to the linear timelines of email, instant messaging, and social networks.
In my thesis, I explore how we might offer more than messaging by creating flexible collaborative spaces in which to collect, organize, and connect the fragments of our digital exchanges. I draw upon comics, which offer a simple framework and graphically rich language to expressively visualize text and images in the form of a story. Through collaborative storytelling and comics, I believe we can digitally communicate with those we care about most without sacrificing emotional connection for convenience.
