Remember that when we talk about practice-led research and research-led practice in this course, we’re not talking about a defined or conventional way of doing research. Research in art and design can mean literally anything; it’s different for each person, and project, and work.

The National Alliance for Public Universities has now published its Charter! Please visit the NAPU website to read/download the text of the charter, where you can also find a form to add your signature. The Charter not only opposes deregulation but shows those in Federal Parliament and university senior management that we have an altogether different understanding of what public universities are and who they serve. Pyne has frequently cited the assent of Universities Australia and many university vice chancellors as evidence that deregulation is supported in the sector, but we know these are groups beholden to corporate self-interest. With the amended bill before Senate next week, now is the time to let them know that university staff will not stand by while our public universities are turned into shops that sell degrees to whomever is lucky enough to afford them.

In 1977, Bueys led 100 Days of the Free International University which involved interdisciplinary workshops which were open to the public. The event featured trade unionists, lawyers, economists, politicians, journalist, community workers, educationalist and sociologist speaking alongside actors, musicians and young artists. The coalition unites us in the recognition that we must change things or die. All of us. We must all change the things that are fucked up and change cannot come in the form that we think of as “revolutionary” – not as a masculinist surge or an armed confrontation. Revolution will come in a form we cannot yet imagine. Moten and Harney propose that we prepare now for what will come by entering into study. Study, a mode of thinking with others separate from the thinking that the institution requires of you, prepares us to be embedded in what Harney calls “the with and for” and allows you to spend less time antagonized and antagonizing.
