The Blood Curtain

Umungochelem thought nothing out of usual when she entered the king’s chambers that evening to tidy up. With her cleaning spray and cloth in hand, she rounded the undone canopy bed and pushed open the already cracked door to the large, luxuriant bathroom. What she saw would haunt her the rest of her life.   She screamed.   Yalumurisolem heard her from the narrow darkness of the hallway. She instantly dropped her towels on the cart and rushed inside.   "What's wrong?" the young woman said as she approached.  The older woman gestured furiously with her finger, as she covered her mouth with the other hand.   Yalu looked inside and drew in a breath.  The king was slumped over in the bath, his wide, still eyes facing her, the water the color of blood.
