rereading squire... kel's dislike of jonathan is genuinely so special to me especially having reread wild magic recently and seeing how charmed daine is by him at first <3 thing is jonathan iv is the greatest king the realm has ever seen he IS working towards social progress and some of the most powerful people living love him and call him their lord. but he fucked this up so baddd she'll serve him she'll obey him but she's never going to like him. FUMBLED! jon has turned so many strange & remarkable people into assets to the throne he's surrounded by the cream of the crop when it comes to the exceptional & the gods-touched. and while kel is for sure an asset to the realm she Actively Dislikes Him. that's the distinction, see, she's an asset to the realm not to him. it's such an L. imagine what you could do with someone like that if she was loyal to you personally instead of just as a concept! and like i think in time she will be an asset To Roald because roald likes and trusts her & his future queen does too... genuinely jon shot himself in the foot by allowing that probationary period. kel is on very good terms with his heir his daughter-in-law his knight commander his CHAMPION his spymaster his greatest spy his most powerful mage... and she cant stand him. how embarrassing your majesty
Thing is, Jonathan is correct here: Kalasin is much too important to become a knight. Arguably, she's more important than her brother, the literal heir, because she is going to do something no one else can. Her marriage is more world changing than almost everything else that happens in the entire worldstate, and she has to be the smartest person on the planet to pull it off. And everyone, including Kel, knows that. It is the ultimate show of duty, and it is something Kel can barely swallow, and I love that.
(Also: it completely vindicates both Alana and my decision to pick George lol.)
So yeah, Kel will never love Jonathan the way the others do, and he deserves it, but every person made the correct choice, even if it wasn't the right one.
(God, I want a Kalasin book so bad.)
The probationary period was indisputably unfair, but politically-speaking it was also a really good move. He didn't do it because he didn't believe a girl could keep up, he did it because it was the only way to get the traditionalists to shut up and let her try. I very much doubt he had any reservations about Kel herself, he knew her family's reputation in the Yamani Islands and knew of her brothers who were already knights. If any girl could do it, Keladry of Mindelan could.
Even if Jonathan had fully overruled him and forced Keladry onto him for Page training, Lord Wyldon would have treated her so much differently that it would have risked driving her out. Wyldon is honorable though, he wants to be proven right because he is right, so Jonathan framed it as a "test," and gave him the ability to send Kel home at the end of a year if she didn't prove herself.
Even though it hurt her and was unfair, that probation year gave Kel the space to show Wyldon that there was a great knight inside of her "flashes of being a commander" as Raoul would later put it.
He played a long game and it paid off, unfortunately for Kel, she started as a pawn in that game of chess so she had to make it to the back row of the board before she could become a knight.
Also... this is coming up and my bank account is quivering in anticipation of it: https://illumicrate.com/blogs/news/illumicrate-exclusive-protector-of-the-small-quartet

I love how this is true and proves the point.
Jonathan IV is a very good king. And I think he made that probationary period on purpose, so Kel, in fact, would dislike him.
He decided to make a calculated risk and he played it on Kel.
I don't know what he would have done if Kel had failed that probationary year, but I do think that is why he convinced Kalasin not to do it.
He knew that the traditionalists would be against his progressiveness.
So, I think....he probably did set it up as best he could in hopes that the first female page would be someone who could, and would, rise to the unfair challenge placed against her and then surpass it in such a way that they (the traditionalists) could never, ever, demand such a thing again.
Up to and including ordering Alanna to never get in personal contact with her until she was a Knight and/or Squire.
And he gets Kel.
Kel, the daughter of ambassadors.
Kel, the protector of the small.
He doesn't want someone else loyal to him.
He wants someone loyal to the throne.
And he gets just that.
He will not be her commander for even half her life in service, most likely. But his son will. And that's what he needs, and wants.
Someone who lived the injustice to be that person at Roald's shoulder to remind him about the cost of such a choice when he is King.
Yes! He wants her to succeed. He wants there to be more Lady Knights after her. He wants that more than he wants to Kel to like him, personally. Because he is trying to make things better for his kingdom, instead of his popularity numbers.
Look at all the problems his father caused because he was so proud of his 'Peacemaker' title - Jon is trying not to do that, and instead trying not to push problems down the line for HIS son to inherit.
I think sotl is like the most iconic tortall quartet and protector of the small is definitely the most thoughtfully well written. but the immortals are the most indulgent by a mile. like this was the quartet written for the twelve year old who still lives inside tamora pierce with the handle animaluvr54 and a massive crush on her middle school english teacher. as a huge fan of the 2015 sci fi classic jupiter ascending im obviously v on board with this
Neal Protectorofthesmall is great because it's like he accidentally wandered into Kel's Low Fantasy Tortall from the High Fantasy Tortall of the SotL & Immortals books. Nealan of Queenscove, eldest (remaining) son and heir of Duke Baird of Queenscove, a house which for generations has offered the crown more knights than almost any other. One of the oldest pages/squires/knights in Tortallan history because he was attending university before his two knighted elder brothers were both slain in the Immortals War, and now he's determined to carry on their memory and his family's legacy in their place. He has piercing green eyes, the same emerald color as his powerful magical healing Gift. He falls in love gets engaged to a close friend of the queen-to-be. He's literally Alanna's squire! How did he get here??
(A stubborn ten-year-old gave him the best lecture on chivalry he'd ever heard, so he decided to be her best friend/sarcasm translator/good right hand for the rest of their lives, that's how.)

rereading pierce's early tortall books as an adult is like. they're not perfect. especially as someone brown and asian lol. but you can feel like that specific era of feminism coming off the page almost as a response to the state of the genre when it was written. the amount of times an older women would take a child or teen protagonist aside and be like just so you know you don't have to marry someone you slept with. no one can force you to be pregnant. contraceptive methods are easily available. sex workers deserve respect and care. you don't have to stay silent about abuse and despite our sexist society resources do exist to protect you. a womans body is her own. just a relentless focus on reproductive health specifically in her medieval fantasy books about dealing with gender roles
If you've ever wanted Tamora Pierce Tortall book covers on your wall, now's your chance! Joyce Patti just launched her website where you can buy prints of her work. Yes, I spent way too much money.
She has 11 covers for sale, First Test isn't available because the original copy was sold to a gallery years ago, but she mentioned possibly tracking it down or recreating it.
Right now I think she's just shipping in the US, but she's looking at international options.
It seems like a one woman operation, so it might take some time to actually get shipped.
She's been working on this for a long time, so give her some love if you can!
To celebrate all waves that return to the ocean.
Inspired by a fave line from a lovely show. Thank you, The Good Place, for a smart, sincere, and kind story.
Youâre welcome, but this is just rudeÂ
You can't make small talk with her for one day without being caught? No, I can't and she freaks me out!

Return to Fangorn
When the War was ended and many roads lay open before them, Legolas Greenleaf and Gimli son of GlĂłin came once more beneath the eaves of Fangorn. There, in the deep hush of that ancient wood, the Dwarfâmindful of old displeasuresâset his axe behind him and lifted up empty hands, as if to make plain his peace before the trees. But Legolas, untroubled, turned and beckoned him on; and in the pale shafts of sunlight, amid mist and wandering lights, the two companions passed together into a forest more ancient than the memory of their strife.

AVATAR AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER (2026)

Water, Earth, Fire, Air.
THE GAANG in AVATAR AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER (2026) Trailer.
further thoughts on intergenerational interaction & shifting genres from my Protector of the Small reread:
Every time Daine or Numair appearsâwell, 80% of the time Daine appears and 100% of the time Numair doesâthey really do just drop in, do some Strange and/or Powerful Magic that makes every other character say softly but with fervor, âWhat the fuck,â and then leave again, and itâs funny every time.
The funniest thing about Kelâs righteous grudge against Jon is that heâs clearly actively trying to charm her, and it still doesnât work. He smiles winningly. He carefully listens to & vows to act on her anti-classist concerns [in fairness I do think heâd do this for others, too]. When he witnesses her terror of heights, he offers a sympathetic anecdote, a dad joke that falls totally flat, and a complex little bit of magic to help. Heâs trying so hard! And every time, Kelâs like, âđ Stop smiling winningly; you did A Wrong and I will Not forget.â
Raoulâs speech about the types of skilled warriors is truly such a savage indictment of his peers. âHeroes, like Alanna the Lioness. Warriors who find dark places and fight in them alone. This is wonderful, but we live in the real world. There arenât that many places without any hope or light.â And then, âCommanders⊠Good ones, like, say, the queen, or Buri, or young Dom, theyâre as rare as heroes.â Note the TOTAL LACK of Jon in that list, even while referencing Thayetâand Thayet surely doesnât have that much more time for literal warrior-ing than Jon does, so itâs not just that heâs listing kinds of warrior âat our levelâ and not including politicians. Heâs just not including Jon. Itâs possible heâs deliberately listing people who are better role models and/or better known to Kel specifically? But, given his irritation at Jon throughout the Progress, Iâm not sure thatâs why.
And IâmâŠnot sure how fair that is? Tortall is in trouble, internally and externally, trouble that the story doesnât always dwell on but does show in the margins. Itâs not just angry/hungry neighbors like Scanra and the newcome Immortals, or even Jonâs monologue about the many factions to balance in trying to change a single law. Itâs Jonâs offhand, âif a member of the old nobility kidnapped a member of the new nobility, it would cause a civil war.â Itâs the prevalence of bandits, a sign of unpaid soldiers and/or desperate poverty. Itâs General Vangetâs harsh, âAnd if you think the realm wonât go to pieces if youâre killed, sire, then you donât know youâre peopleâŠ. Roald doesnât command the Dominion Jewel, with its power over each pond and leaf in this kingdom. People think if you fall, the land falls.â
We donât see any actual common people asserting that, but maybe the general, himself âold nobilityâ, is projecting; and it 100% fits real historical trends. A primary advantage of monarchy as system of government is that itâs supposed to be stable. Tortall is undergoing a time of drastic change, of which women warriors are the smallest partâthough a key symbol. Immortals have returned, many of them dangerous, and there ARE war-eager border neighbors. The middle class and below is steadily rising, some to join the nobility (Kelâs own grandfather; in Jonâs reign, Baron George Cooper, Coram Smythesson taking over the ancient Barony of Trebond), and some no doubt just wealthy. And the current king & queen are furthering this, with the integration of the Bazhir and with schools and a new military organization, the Queenâs Riders, open to all social classes!
So itâs hard to say, I think deliberately, how well Jon & his government is doing at managing All Of That. In certain ways, heâs arguably making it worseâwith the aim of making it better & more stable for everyone long-term. Raoul complains about being used as a show pony, but a purpose of the Kingâs Own IS clearly to be not just a strong military unit, but one which publicly exerts the kingâs willâin their flashy ContĂ©-blue uniforms. And, in addition to marching in the âlook at our stable monarchal succession & unified country!â royal progress, Jon has them deliberately connecting with & integrating the Bazhir (while also, perhaps, being a pointed reminder to the Bazhir of the Tortallan govtâs might in arms), and running around the realm not just fighting monsters and killing bandits, but providing manual labor in natural disasters. And if the hallmark of a âcommanderâ is âknow[ing] where someone will shine and where they will collapseâ, well, Raoul grumbles but heâs clearly THRIVING as Commander of this Kingâs Own, and so is the KO is thriving under his command. (I AM willing to headcanon that it was Raoulâs idea to add ânatural disaster responseâ to their mandate.)
All this musing is making me wish Pierce had continued moving forward in Tortallâs timeline, instead of jumping sideways geographically for the Tricksterâs books and back from Provostâs Dog and Numairâs book. PotS does feel like itâs grounding things so much that you canât tell the sort of epic story in Tortall that you used to (SotL, Immortals)âthere arenât that many places left without hope or light! But the later series arenât that kind of epic high fantasy anyway. Provostâs Dog is exactly the sort of commoner-focused, commoner-empowering story that would feel natural coming after PotS, and which I think would be fantastic with the PotS generation in the background as the SotL generation is in PotS. Maybe a little further in the background, as itâs pointedly NOT focused on the nobility, but doing the same job of showing the worldstate that the previous characters managed to build. And the Tricksterâs books are exactly the gritty, violent political upheaval drama that is clearly going to result the next time the ContĂ© royal heir does NOT have enough Gift and/or strength of will to wield the Dominion Jewel, or at least is viewed as such. (Which is inevitable, because âthe next heir is an idiotâ is the inevitable failure state of would-be stable monarchies.)
