I foresee a few possible paths:

It is a specific type of Bloodrot, causing the fungal zombie/ shadowdropper phenomena.

Bloodrot and Shadowdropper things are not related

Those with bloodrot do not gain immunity due to the different strain of fungi that causes it; the "cordyceps", or whatever it's called, does not cause bloodrot.
