Summary:Â Your boyfriend is currently on a tour overseas and calls you right in the middle of a meeting, because he has certain needs he asks you to tend to - even from the other side of the world.
A/N:Â I'm a long distance girlie and I got you all other long distance girlies or those who long to be one in their dreams đ
"WHAT?!" you typed into your phone, eyes darting between the text your boyfriend had sent and the familiar faces in the online meeting, all staring at you from your laptop screen and expecting an answer to a question that you had somehow forgotten altogether.
"Could you please elaborate on your problem, especially the last part, so that I can provide the most helpful answer?"
You feigned professionalism to breeze past your embarrassing inattention, but the truth was that even when one of the meeting participants repeated every word with even more detail about their struggles, all you could hear was background noise as another question seemed to materialize before your eyes:
"What are you wearing?"
The exact same words had thrown you so completely off balance that you had suddenly forgotten what this entire meeting was about. Breaking eye contact with the team as little as possible and nodding occasionally, you moved your fingers across your phone, hoping to hit the right keys and praying that auto correct would have mercy on you as you replied to your boyfriend:
"Not now"
Somehow, you still felt your cheeks flush and could only hope that nobody would notice through the camera. Jaehyun was currently on a short overseas tour, and it had already been a week since he left. Every night, before his show started on the other side of the world, you tried to face time for at least ten minutes. Messages were infrequent due to the time difference, but they were always sweet.
"What are you wearing?" Jaehyun texted again.
You remembered. Today was his second day off in a row, so he had a little bit of free time. You took a deep breath in when the person in the meeting finished their explanation, turned your phone upside down, and tried answering their question as best as you could with the little information you had been able to grasp.
You heard your phone buzzing a few more times while doing so, but you tried to ignore it. There were only five minutes left in the meeting, Jaehyun could at least be patient for that long if he really wanted something from you. However, those five minutes felt like an hour as you had to listen to your boss simultaneously praise you and close the meeting.
The moment everyone logged out of the meeting, your reached for your phone with nervous fingers.
"What are you wearing?"
"Send me a picture"
"What are you doing?"
"I'm lying in bed here"
"What are you wearing?"
You nearly choked on your own saliva skimming over the texts. But before you could gather your thoughts on them, Jaehyun's name popped up big on the screen along with the incoming call. You made sure you had entirely logged out of the meeting and checked twice that your camera and microphone were turned off as well.
"What are you wearing?" Jaehyun asked as soon as you picked up.
You heard it rustling on the other side of the line, implying that he was currently lying in bed, just as he had texted you.
"Sleeping in today?" You tried to change the topic, but Jaehyun was persistent.
"Are you working from home?"
"Yes."
He repeated, "What are you wearing?"
"I was in a meeting just now and I actually have to prepare-"
You heard him chuckle. "Now, who is your boss? Your computer or me?"
A sigh escaped your lips. "You, of course."
"Good girl." A chuckle again. "Now, tell me what are you wearing?"
"A white button up and leggings."
"Mm-hm⌠and underneath?"
A mix of nervousness and anticipation tugged on the corner of your lips. "The red bra that you like so much."
A pause, followed by a deep inhale. "Tell me more."
"I'm still clocked in for work, Jaehyun."
You could feel his wide grin across the wide ocean. "Technically, on this side of the earth, your workday hasn't even started yet."
You rolled your eyes, but smiled. "What do you want me to do?"
"Go to the bedroom."
You briefly checked to ensure all your chats were answered, hoping to increase the odds that nobody would notice your absence for the next ten to fifteen minutes. On your way to follow Jaehyun's instructions, you heard a dull rustling paired with the jingling sound of metal. It seemed he had already discarded his jeans.
You sank back into your pillows, bringing the phone closer to your ear. "I'm on the bed now."
"Good." Jaehyun gulped and lowered his voice. "Take off your pants too. But slowly, so that I can imagine it."
He didn't ask for a video call - as always. You appreciated the fact that he supported you in standing your ground, because you weren't ready for that kind of step yet. Itâs not that you werenât tempted to take these sessions with your boyfriend to the next level whenever he was abroad. But since you had only done it a handful of times so far, you wanted to take it slow - and he was being patient.
"Done," you said, stretching out your legs on top of the blanket before you unbuttoned your shirt upon Jaehyun's next instruction.
"Do your red bra and panties match?"
"Yes."
"Very nice. Now, take off your bra too."
You still felt a bit shy, but kept telling yourself that nobody was watching you, so you should just enjoy the very little time you had with your boyfriend whenever he was on tour.
"Take your time," Jaehyun coaxed you.
A few more moments passed. Then, you hooked your thumb into the right bra strap and pulled it down. You did the same with the other after switching the phone to your opposite hand. Leaning forward slightly, you unclasped the bra at your back and took it completely off.
"Now, I want you to touch your breasts the way I do. Can you do that?"
Of course you could, and you told him.
Your fingers were cold when you touched the skin on the slope of your breast. Goosebumps became slightly visible around the nearby area, but you kept going, knowing that you would soon enough grow used to the sensation. You dragged your fingers upwards until you reached your most sensitive spot.
"Very well," Jaehyun said with a light chuckle, having apparently caught on to the change in your breathing rhythm. "What do you feel?"
You closed your eyes, listening to him talk to you through the phone when you were suddenly hit by a massive wave of longing. "I miss you."
"But I'm right here, aren't I? You can hear my voice, you can feel me. My hands are on your breasts and they wander upwards. You can feel my fingers playing with your nipples and causing you to let out that one sound you always make when you get into the mood⌠Ah, there it is. Told you so. Good girl."
You gulped and your fingers halted. You hadn't realized how perfectly he could talk you through this, effortlessly taking your mind off your embarrassment and shyness. He could read every single one of your moves, emotions, and tones.
"How do you feel?" Jaehyun asked.
"I feel⌠good."
"Very well. Do you have your eyes closed?"
"Yes." You knew what usually came next.
"I lower my head and take your nipple between my lips. Keep touching yourself⌠good. I can hear how much you enjoy it, imagining me doing this to you right now. You'd be running your fingers through my hair and pulling on the strands the moment I start sucking. Are you still with me?⌠Very well. You can be as loud as you want. I love it."
You kept your eyes closed, because you knew the moment you opened them, it would be hard to get back into the illusion of Jaehyun being right on top of you, settling between your legs and indulging in your breasts as though it were the greatest joy of his life. Instead, you mimicked everything you remembered with your own hands.
"Now, slowly run your fingers down to your stomach."
That was when Jaehyun usually would lean on his side and trace his hand along the middle of your body, past your navel until he reached the waistband of your panties. Following his memory, you did exactly that.
"You're still wearing your panties?"
"⌠Yes."
"Take them off.."
You put Jaehyun on loudspeaker and placed the phone next to you on the pillow. You slid the small piece of fabric over your bum, using your legs to help discard it entirely by partly tugging and partly kicking it away.
"Done."
You felt exposed rather than completely turned on right now, having opened your eyes after all and watching yourself spread out naked on the bed like this. But seeing the wet stain left on your underwear, you concluded that you were turned on more than you had actually admitted to yourself so far.
"Spread your legs wide," Jaehyun urged. "Tell me how wet you are."
"I'm soaked," you told him, but hadn't dared touching yourself there yet. You significantly felt something moist on the onset of your thighs though.
"Mh-hm⌠how come?"
"Because I imagine you on top of me."
"What do I do next on top of you?"
"You touch me."
"Where exactly do I touch you? Say it."
"Between my legs."
"Say more."
"You⌠you place your hand there. And then you⌠spread me wider, because you know I instinctively want to bring my thighs back together. You then start stroking me. Slowly⌠at first. To get me used to it."
"Do it."
It wasn't like you had never touched yourself before. It just took you quite a bit of time to find the right movements and angles again, and Jaehyun could tell you were struggling.
"Easy," he calmed you. "Just the thought of you is enough to make me grow. Take your time. Tell me if I can help you with something, I'm patient."
"Tell me about the night we first met."
You both knew exactly what was coming, yet you could hear this story a million times over from him.
"When I first saw you by the bar at the brand's dinner party, I had two thoughts. First: What is this beautiful woman doing here all alone? And second: How long would it take me to get her to my hotel room and strip her out of that sexy black dress - the one that makes me hard just at the thought of imagining what she looks like underneath?"
"So, you wanted me because you thought I was sexy."
"No," he said, shaking his head. "I wanted you because I knew you were alone on purpose. I saw all that boredom mirrored in your eyes when I talked to you. Neither of us wanted to be there."
"So we decided to be together instead."
"Exactly."
You slipped your index finger inside you which was directly welcomed by a warmth and wetness only Jaehyun's voice and presence could cause you to feel.
"Better now?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Use two fingers, like me."
You pushed your middle finger right next to where the other one already was. The slippery sound you made as you started moving them in and out of yourself was music to Jaehyun's ears, and you heard him groan.
"Good girl. What do you imagine now?"
You closed your eyes again. "I see you next to me. It's you who uses his fingers inside of me."
"Do you remember what I do aside from that?"
"Y-yes."
"Do it and describe it to me."
You swallowed heavily. "I let the heel of my hand rub over⌠my clit."
"And how does it feel to you?"
"So good. Just like you doing it."
"How about picking up the pace a bit? Let me hear how you imitate me when I'm not with you."
Listening to every word he said, you settled into a flow of motion. You rubbed the ball of your hand over the area where your clit was located, simultaneously pushing and pulling your two fingers in and out of yourself. It was the perfect combination of internal penetration and external stimulation right where you were the most receptive to an orgasm.
Indeed, it had taken you a bit more time than it would have if Jaehyun were doing it, but soon enough, you found the right rhythm and pressure. You followed them in an alternating pattern that came close to your boyfriend's own blueprint. A moan escaped your lips before you even had time to think about it, and immediately, he encouraged you,
"Don't hold back. Let me hear everything. Let me hear how I can make you feel, even from afar."
You noticed the onset of an orgasm as a familiar sensation tugged at your very core - one you couldn't quite hold onto. You knew exactly what to do next, but you needed Jaehyun's help to get there.
"Are you close too?" you asked him instead.
He liked your pro-activeness. "Yes."
"How big have you grown?"
You rolled your head back into the pillows and let your fingers slip out of yourself. You didn't need them inside you now to finish yourself off. Instead, you placed them directly over your mound, parting your fingers slightly so that your sensitive bundle of nerves rested perfectly between them, slick and dripping wet.
Jaehyun replied, "So big that at this point, you can feel my thighs tense and use your entire hand."
You could vividly imagine it. As you rubbed your clit between your wet fingers, the slippery noises mixed with your moans to fill the room. In your head, you had Jaehyun's cock in your mouth now, using your lips, tongue, and hand all at the same time.
And you told him that, only causing him to swear under his breath. "Shit. Do you know what you're doing to me?"
Yes, you knew exactly what he wanted. You heard him moan on the other end of the line as well, the sound of his hand moving up and down his length reaching you clearly.
You felt the coil of lust growing bigger and bigger, tugging at every part of you, making your toes curl and the inside of your mouth run dry.
"Are you thirsty?" Jaehyun asked.
But the both of you knew it wasn't water that you now needed.
Your answer was always the same, "Yes."
You saw him in your imagination, legs spread wide with your hands dominating every movement of his until there was no self-control left in him anymore - and none left in you, either.
Your muscles shook, sending spasms to every last fiber of your body as your orgasm took over, making you cum all over your wet hand. You didn't hold back your noises, letting go of every restraint while imagining Jaehyun on top, under, inside, and above you all at once. You recalled every memory you had saved, desperate to make this brief moment with him last.
You had been so busy with yourself that you hadn't noticed what went down on the other side of the ocean. While you slowly came down from your high - the blanket beneath you soaked with your discharge and a light sheen of sweat covering your body - you acknowledged the fact that it had gotten very silent on Jaehyun's end.
"Are you⌠still there?" you asked into the void.
But at that moment, you saw a new chat notification on your phone. A picture from Jaehyun that he had sent you just a few seconds ago.
"Sorry I finished shortly before you," he told you the same time you opened it. "I couldn't hold back anymore listening to you moaning like that⌠My good girl."
The evidence was right there in the picture.
Your cheeks heated and you quickly closed the picture again, saving it for later in case you were in the mood for another session - entirely alone this time though.
When you returned to your laptop not much later, you had three missed calls from your boss and another meeting you were ten minutes late to.

String walking?? woww that's crazy cool :0 be safe!! I have to hand in my final draft of my thesis in a few days but I procrastinated like crazy and now im super ill đđ I'm also working a 10 hour shift today so I gotta manifest some good healing energy ngl... but also I dug my own grave lol. I'm not really following the wc but I can't believe US won from Paraguay like what's going on...
Thank you! It was so cool though, I canât wait to try out my new archery skill in regular practice đ¤Š
Let me tell you something as someone who handed in her final thesis on the last day and thought she could write the ending paragraph the morning she had to print it out and send it over all by 10am⌠Donât trust yourself when you get tempted to go to sleep and think you can finish it the next day. It never goes well hahhaha But I manifest good healing energy for you too, you will do well â¨đâ¨
Omg I had my bets on Paraguay while my co workers all betted for the US hahahah and they were right đŤŠ
hii!! I hope you're doing well :) do you have any fun plans for the weekend?
Hiiii :) Oh, this Saturday I will attend a special archery workshop to work on my string walking skills hehe Otherwise, just watching football on Sunday with my friends, because it's Germany's first game in the World Cup... IM SCARED LOL
hi omg i just want to let you know how happy i am whenever i see an update from my favorite nct writers way way back (like you!) i've been a reader since 2022 so it really warms my heart whenever i hear from you guys đ like it doesn't even have to be a new writeup, even a reblog or a life update makes me happy. you have been a part of my stan life and girlhood, i feel like i grew up with you and nct as well. take care always and do whatever makes you happy! đĽšđ¤
Omg you're so sweet for telling me this! Your message really warmed my heart, you know?! During Taeyong's and Jaehyun's military services, it was just so quiet here. I thought people lost interest and fell out of love with nct, their bias or this world altogether. Which is... just life. We grow up, we develop new interests, move on with life, and also leave some things in the past. I was sooo happy when I saw my notifs spiking again as soon as Taeyong and Jaehyun came back, and then getting messages from my readers - like you - again! Who are still here, cheering and supporting... I cannot express enough how grateful I am to still be on this journey with you which will hopefully last many, many more years!! Thank you for taking your time to write me all of this, I hope I can continue contributing to your happiness too đđđ

Pairing:Â navy soldier/idol!Taeyong x barista!reader
Genre:Â fluff, romance
Word Count: 3.8k
Summary: Over the past few months, youâve developed a crush on a navy soldier who frequented your cafĂŠ almost every weekend. When he stops coming, you begin to wonder whether you waited too long and missed your chance altogether.
A/N: Happy Christmas, guys! đ This is my present for you - in celebration of the year coming to an end and Taeyong's return. Thank you for your constant support and for still and always being here đ
In the spring, he liked strawberry ade.
In the summer, he liked iced Americano.
In the autumn, he liked coconut smoothies.
In the winter, he liked sweet potato latte.
You had his order ready by every Saturday afternoon.
That was when he would usually stop by the little coffee shop you were working at - sometimes with his friends, sometimes all by himself. Sometimes he wore his navy uniform, sometimes he wore casual clothes.
But always, he ordered the same seasonal drinks and always, he was smiling.
Until one winter day, he suddenly stopped coming altogether, and you began to wonder whether you had missed your chance because you had waited too long.
"What will you do once the new year starts?" the coffee shop owner asked you on another Saturday afternoon in December when you waited for him to no avail. She was a lady in her mid fifties who had welcomed you very warmly when you had turned up here lost and hopeless earlier in the spring. "Will you leave our small town again or will you stay here a little while longer?"
You had landed in this rural part of the country after fleeing from your old life in the big city by the seaside. After a bad break up with a guy who betrayed you only a month after you had moved countries for him, you got on the next bus towards an unknown destination.
That unknown destination was supposed to be a temporary solution only, but you had ended up staying longer than intended for two reasons: You still didn't know what to do after, and the only silver lining in your otherwise dim life was the person who usually ordered a sweet potato latte around this time of the day.
The exact drink you had already prepared out of a habit and was now sitting on the counter for the third week in a row, untouched.
"I know you want me to stay." You sighed. "I will consider it."
"You can look for a job in Daejeon, it's just around the corner and I have very good connections there so that it won't be too much of a problem to find a company that sponsors your new visa. And who knowsâŚ" She winked. "Maybe he will come back one day."
According to your boss, he had apparently finished his service, so even that was gone for you. You wished you had known, even though the only words you had ever exchanged were hellos and goodbyes, and the usual respectful "how are you?".
You didn't know his name, neither anything else about him. You thought you still had time to gather all the courage to ask him out as though almost one year wasn't enough.
And now it was too late.
"Maybe he will," you answered to your boss, knowing very well these words didn't come from the bottom of your heart as you didn't believe in her hopeful saying. "I had almost a year to figure things out, and now that I have to decide, I'm still unsure. It feels like I did nothing and only wasted time."
"You were healing and finding yourself. That's a whole lot of work too."
"You think so?"
You stared out of the entrance door, still hoping he would emerge through it any moment. But you had long found out not to expect anything anymore in the first place.
The first snow of the year had started to fall this morning and the streets and houses were already covered in a thin, white blanket. The little cafĂŠ was usually very busy at this time of the week, but this Saturday, it was unusually quiet as many students had traveled to their respective hometowns for winter break already, only three sitting quietly at their respective tables, studying or reading.
"It's okay if you don't know it yet, dear." The owner patted your back. "I told you, you can work here until your last day, no matter your decision. If you want to stay in the country or leave entirely again... You know how much I appreciated your help from the moment you walked in here and asked for a job. I just cannot sponsor your visa with my little shop, but I know it's also not what you want."
You smiled apologetically. "Yes, I would very much like to start a career in my field again."
"See, you have direction already." She then nodded at the drink sitting on the counter untouched. "Is this for him?"
You smiled and drew your shoulders up. "Maybe, I hope that he is on vacation and will come back here to get his usual drink as though he was never gone."
"So many months and you didn't even ask him for his name," the lady sighed. "Back in my days, we just went up to the guy we liked. There was no social media, no way to contact each other other than paying a visit or getting their landline number. Today, everything is much easier, yet you didn't jump at the chance when you could."
You laughed in embarrassment, hoping to hide your disappointment. "It's fine. If it hasn't happened until now, then it wasn't meant to be. Though, perhaps, a part of me still hopes he will find his way back here someday when I'm still present."
"It's never too late," she said, and just at that moment, the doorbell chimed in announcement of new customers.
Your heart already skipped a beat at the sound before you heard giggles and disappointment settled at the fact that a group of young women walked in instead of the person you had hoped for. They were probably in their early twenties and foreigners just like you.
"This is the cafĂŠ where Taeyong regularly went to!" one of them exclaimed.
"I can't believe we're finally here!"
"What did he say in his live again was the best drink he got here?"
"Sweet potato latte!"
"Let's get that one!"
The group, which consisted of four women, went up to your counter.
"We'd like four sweet potato lattes, please!" one of them ordered.
It was always the same.
For the past three weeks, several times a week, one shy young woman or a very giggly girl group would visit your coffee shop and order a drink a certain Taeyong would supposedly order all the time here.
You just didn't know a person called Taeyong.
But the girls were always so cute and kept your business running even during the slower days, so you were willing to mix as many sweet potato lattes as possible.
But as you were pouring milk into the third cup, you couldn't hold yourself back to ask them, "Who's this Taeyong person people like coming here for?" You always swore to yourself that you would look him up after work, but usually forgot about it by the time you arrived at home. "Is he a famous chef? A food blogger? An influencer?"
"He is an idol!" one of the girls answered excitedly as she watched you preparing the drinks with sparkly eyes. "And a very talented and famous one on top of that."
"Oh, I don't know much about Korean idols, sorry."
"Surely, you must know him and interacted with him if you work here on the weekends!" another girl chimed in.
"I've been working here since April, on all weekends, as a matter of fact."
They shared a long look you couldn't exactly define and all four heads then turned back at you in unison. One girl stretched out her hand in which she was holding her phone.
"Look at my display!" she told you. "That's Taeyong! Does he look familiar to you? Please try to remember, we'd love to hear some stories about him!"
You squeezed your eyes. "Eh⌠I cannot quite tell."
The guy on her display was donned in lavender shorts that showed a little bit of skin and a long-sleeved cardigan. He was kneeling on what seemed to be a bed with white sheets, wearing black patent-leather shoes. A delicate face with light-pink and blue hair that rolled on the nape of his neck stared at you, lips a bit brighter than the same color on the top of his head. He looked beautiful, just like a fairy.
The face though⌠there was something familiar in his gaze, but the wallpaper was way to bright and the face way too small on the display.
But you were sure you had never seen this person before in your life.
"Are you sure he's been here before?" you asked back carefully. "I'm sure I would recognize a person this pretty and yet still striking looking."
"Of course she wouldn't recognize him!" the girl at the back said. "She hasn't changed her wallpaper since the magazine issue was released, which was in 2023! He's been in the military for almost two years, he looks entirely different now! Here, let me show you-"
"Oh girls, it's fine!" you laughed it off, having finished preparing the last drinks for your customers. "Just enjoy your drinks, and if I happen to come across a person that looks like him, I'll post it on our social media, promise."
"I doubt that he will return as he's already back in Seoul," the girl who had showed you her phone said with much disappointment as she took her drink. "But it's nice to visit a place he's frequented during our roundtrip."
"So where are you you guys headed to next?"
You chit-chatted with them for a little while longer before you returned to your position and started wiping the counter, getting dragged back into your thoughts. The girls' idol didn't leave your mind though. Perhaps this time, you would really look him up. You must know him for sure if their story was true. But who could it be?
There was only one military guy who had visited the cafĂŠ as often as they claimed their idol did and ordered the same drink. But there was no way they could mean himâŚ
He had nothing in common with the person on the picture.
Your guy was muscular and buff, had short dark hair, wore black-rimmed glasses and was fairly tanned. He stood out as well, but in the way he carried himself and the aura he radiated, which had made you drawn to him in the first place.
One time though, he had taken off his glasses.
And then you faltered.
That gazeâŚ
Your hand already slipped into the pocket of your apron to fish out your phone when the bell rang, announcing another customer. By now, everyone had left and the owner was about to close the shop.
You turned around, preparing yourself to tell the guest they unfortunately needed to leave. But the breath you had just sucked in got stuck in your throat as you froze mid-motion. Stunned, you looked into the face you had just imagined a moment prior.
A face that was so familiar, yet so foreign to you as he was both people: the guy from the military and the guy from the girl's lock screen.
How could you have missed that?
"Am I too late?" he asked with a smile.
Now you knew his name too: Taeyong.
"It's never too late!" the owner chimed in with a giggle and then disappeared in the backroom.
You gulped, hiding your shaking hands in the pockets of your apron. Why was he here? According to his fans, he was supposed to be in Seoul and your small town was hours drives away from the capital. You had so, so wished for this moment to come, but now that he was actually here, you were hit by shyness again and didn't know what to do.
"O- one sweet potato latte?" you asked, catching your voice in the middle of the sentence as not to let your insecurity slip.
"Yes, please."
You pulled the corners of your lips into a forced smile and shifted back to the counter where you started to prepare his drink. The noise of the coffee grinder filled the silence of the empty cafĂŠ and it somehow reassured you as you were searching for the right words to speak to him. When the machine stopped - too soon for your liking - you still hadn't found them.
"You weren't here the past few weeks," was your meek attempt when you poured the shot into a cup. It was better than nothing though.
A quick glance at him from the corner of your eyes revealed his surprise. "I didn't think you'd notice."
Had he really been this oblivious? You smiled. "Of course I noticed. Out of a habit, I always prepared your drinks nonetheless. But you never came to pick them up."
He raised his brows, now in disbelief. "You did?"
Your cheeks heated up, but you hid them by dropping your head and pouring milk into the cup. "I thought you were sick or on vacation⌠Until I realized you might have finished your duty here."
"Yes. I went back to Seoul where I reside."
"What brought you back today then?"
You put the lid on the finished drink and placed it on the counter as slowly as possible as you didn't want him to leave yet. You didn't dare looking up. As his answer took to long to come though, you had no other choice but to do so.
He was looking aside, the back of his hand covering the lower half of his face. The tips of his ears had turned pink and a touch of that flush had also settled on the upper half of his cheeks. Apparently, you weren't the only person quite awkward in this setting.
"I had to pick up some stuff I had left behind."
"I seeâŚ"
"And," he added quickly before your disappointment could settle, still not facing you but slowly lowering his arm, "I was wondering whether you were still here."
"Oh, you did?" You inhaled sharply, unsure what to respond to this. "I was always here. But I might not stay for much longer."
His head snapped back at you, his eyes wide. "You're leaving?"
You heaved your shoulders up and let them down again. "Maybe I'll stay, maybe I'll leave⌠I don't know yet."
"Where would you go to?"
"Back to my home country? Maybe to another city here? I really don't know. It dependsâŚ"
"On what exactly?" he wanted to know.
"What brings me to each destination."
"What brought you here?"
"A broken heart and the urge to run away from my pain."
He nodded understandingly in a way that signaled you he truly knew what you were talking about despite the spare words. "And now? How do you feel now?"
Nobody had asked you this before, but you had your answer ready by heart, "Healed and open for something new."
A bright smile spread across his lips and he leaned over to pick up his sweet potato latte. "Then you should cease this feeling, no matter where it brings you to."
His gaze lingered on you a little too long, and too much time passed before he turned around and moved into the direction of the door. He looked back at you too many times and walked too slowly for someone who intended to leave. Everything he did, he took his time with in hopes forâŚ
But even though you had the chance - again and again - you let it pass - again and again. No matter how hard you tried, how much you wanted to stop him and tell him to stay, not a single word passed your lips.
Until the bell chimed and the entire coffee shop was empty again.
"Ouch!" was the first word you uttered when you got hit by the kitchen towel that the owner had just slapped you with.
"Girl, are you insane?!" she scolded you loudly. "Why did you let him go?!"
"I was- he was-," you stuttered. "He is-⌠he is an idol!"
The elderly lady stared at you as though you had entirely lost your mind. "So what?! Isn't he human and can't have feelings too? You just had a normal conversation, what makes him different now? He is the same guy that frequented the cafĂŠ with no care in the world. He came here every Saturday because of you, and now returned from Seoul just to see you again, and you messed it up!"
"What would he want from me?" you asked, intimated by the fears you had just made up in your mind. "I'm just⌠a normal person."
"You are kind, reliable, talk well with strangers, handle even difficult situations properly, treat everyone the same, and are a fast learner. He's perceived this probably in all those weeks he stepped by here. We may not know it ourselves as the workers, but our customers, they know from the first moment they step into a shop. How they are treated, how they feel around us. What could he not like about you that I don't like already?"
You stared at the door through which he had left, watching the snow dance through the air as the wind had gotten stronger. A nearby street lamp illuminated each flake, putting them in stark contrast to the dark later afternoon background.
"I made a terrible mistake," you suddenly uttered nearly absentmindedly.
"As I said, it's never too late. Go," the owner first said softly. Then, as you still hesitated, urged louder, "Go!"
With one swift with motion, you discarded the apron and ran through the cafĂŠ, opening the door without even caring to put on a jacket. Ice cold wind hit you like a wall the moment you stepped outside, but you swallowed the pain down.
"Taeyong!" you yelled, looking to the left and right of you.
But as expected, there was no figure close by. You first ran into one direction until you reached an intersection that was just as empty. You then turned back and ran to the other side of the street. Even there, there was no other human being except for you, standing alone in the dark and yelling again,
"Taeyong!"
Now you realized the cold that had crept under your thin layers, seemingly under your skin as well. You started shivering and tried shielding your face with your hand from the heavy snowfall that made it difficult for you to see. You felt really hopeless and a little stupid too, as you yelled out again,
"Taeyong!"
He must be gone by now. From what you could observe through the snowfall, you were still the only person in the immediate vicinity. If only it wasn't snowing so heavily, you could see better and run faster. If it weren't for this stupid weather and your stupid actions, you would have found him by now.
But you had missed your chance. The owner was wrong.
Sometimes, it was too late.
Taeyong would never return to this small town when he was a big idol, probably residing in a luxurious home in the capital. And Seoul was such a big city. There was no way you could find him as you knew nothing about him. He had many fans too, that made it impossible to approach him at concertsâŚ
You wanted to cry.
You really hated the stupid snow and your stupid attitude.
"Aren't you cold?"
Your head shot up. He stood directly in front of you, tall and broad. Snowflakes had settled on his glasses and shoulders despite him holding an umbrella that he was now spreading over the two of you.
"You're back!" you exclaimed.
He pursed his lips and avoided your gaze. "I couldn't leave just... like that. I wanted to go back."
"I was looking for you!"
He locked eyes with you again, astonishment mirrored in them. "I heard you calling my name. So you know about⌠me. For how long?"
In his voice swung a touch of wariness. You couldn't blame him for being careful considering who he truly was.
"I only figured it out today when another group of girls came in and ordered a sweet potato latte, because their idol liked drinking one here."
"Oh yeah⌠I talked about it in the live stream after my return. I'm sorry for causing problems with that statement. But it's the truth. It was my favorite coffee shop. It still is."
You shook your head. "It brought us more customers and made us more popular, my boss is really pleased. So thank you for that, I suppose."
"You⌠" He paused and you witnessed the upper halves of cheeks changing color again. "You really had a sweet potato latte prepared for me in all the weeks I was away?"
"Yes. But only in the winter. In the spring, I would have prepared strawberry ade, in the summer iced Americano, and in the autumn coconut smoothies."
He was speechless for a moment. "You know all of my favorite drinks in your cafĂŠ."
"That was because I always looking forward to Saturdays."
For a long moment neither of you said a word. Suddenly, you also didn't feel so cold anymore. There was a warmth that radiated from the depths of your heart that you had deemed lost quite a while ago. Apparently, it had still been there all this time.
"So," he then started, "When will you know what to do next?"
"Maybe I already have a tendency," you admitted.
"You do?" he asked.
You nodded, smiling shyly. "Daejeon has been on my mind for quite a while actually. I've been there often and I like it. It's not far away from here, but it's still a bigger city with more opportunities for me. Maybe I can even jump back into my old career now that I speak the language quite well. AndâŚ" You paused and eventually brought yourself to confess with the heat now creeping up your entire face, "It's only a two hour drive to Seoul. I wouldn't mind visiting the capital every now and then either, though I surely prefer the countryside."
He grinned. "Well, I would be happy about that, honestly. But what if I tell you Daejeon is actually my hometown and I'm there quite often?" His grin grew bigger.
"So⌠you would have come here again if we hadn't met today?"
"Of course. And every day after that until you would have said yes."
You tilted your head. "Yes to what?"
"To getting a sweet potato latte with me this time."
Perhaps, your boss was right. It was never too late.
You learned it right there, on a snowy winter afternoon in a small town you had initially never wanted to step foot in but that had given you way more than you had bargained for in the end.
Hey guys!! I took a short break, because of work and then vacation, BUT I'm back now and wow, I've seen all your requests! I'll do them once I've finished my short, romantic, winterly Taeyong one shot, because I cannot celebrate my bias coming back without doing something for him, too! đĽ°
i was shedding tears when she took out her strawberry chapstick. Thank you so much for writing this đ this felt different yet similar from all of your works. I love love love love all of your works like every single one of them! And itâs very hard to find good five these days from good authors and Iâm glad we have you! This nearly made me tear up⌠thank you so much for saying that, I cannot put into words how much your message means to me đĽşđĽşđĽş
At a few points, I felt so discouraged, because throughout the past months, the activity decreased a lot on here. Itâs the military era, I suppose? Thatâs why Iâm so happy to still see avid readers! July, New York City, USA
It had been three months since you woke up from an artificial coma, and not a single day had passed without you wishing they would put you right back in.Â
You doubted anyone else would have reacted any differently after everything youâd been through these past weeks.
After the accident, the surgeons had managed to save your life without causing any long-lasting damages to your head except for a scar. Two months ago, you were finally discharged and allowed to return home - but not to your own apartment. No, you went back to your father's place where your sister had temporarily moved in as well. He had said it was only precautions to observe your healing process and protect you from the public interest in your case. Additionally, having the entire family together would help you find your way back into your old life much easier.Â
But you knew better. He was afraid paparazzi would snap a picture of you or that you could accidentally say something wrong to them and add fuel to the fire, so you and your sister were confined indoors for a long time.
Every day, reporters gathered in front of the building, trying to catch a glimpse of the famous heiress who had gone missing and one day magically returned without further explanation. Your family was all over the media for weeks, and your father wasn't able to put a stop to the constant coverage of this scandal since the news had gotten out before he could bribe the newspapers and tv channels. It didnât take the media very long to connect the dots and figure out that no one had seen you since the end of last September as a matter of fact, adding more questions to a case hobby online investigators made it their mission to solve.
By July, the public interest had significantly dropped, only about a handful of paparazzi now present in front of your fatherâs apartment building. You were finally allowed to leave.
"Are you happy to go back to your apartment today?" your sister asked that morning. "You will love the new interior. It's different from before, but I thought you might like it more this way."
She meant well, but she couldnât hide the fact in her voice that she was happy to finally go home as well. She was so fed up by all of this - just like you. It was thanks to your sister that you could leave though, because if she hadnât convinced your father, you would stay here many more weeks. You just had to promise to be on alert with reporters and only leave the house with a bodyguard. It was fine for you since you didnât plan on leaving anyway.
You forced yourself to smile in response to your sisterâs attempts to talk to you. It was an act you needed to carry out so often lately, because otherwise your father would call a doctor to check on your injured head again.Â
Though, they never found anything. You were perfectly healthy and clearheaded. Your father just couldn't seem to understand. He didn't want to understand.
"Thank you,â you said to your sister. âI really appreciate it."
You didn't want to push her away or resent her anymore. You couldn't. She was just as much a victim of your father as you were, and she had made up for every pent-up vile word she had ever said to you the moment she didn't leave your hospital bed for days on end, holding your hand all through your critical state.
Your sister had been back home since the middle of December and for just as long, they had been searching for you.
The official story went like this: Your family had gone on a very long vacation from the end of September until before Christmas. The fact that your father had caused a life-threatening situation that involved his daughters as well was being kept tightly under wraps. Of course, in the end, it had all been settled with money. Apparently, it had cost him a few residences in countries you had never visited in the past anyway.Â
He had been so sure that you would return after he had settled everything. That had been the plan. The difference was that your sister's companion had acted according to plan and brought her back after a little over two months - and yours hadn't.
When your father had started realizing that Jaehyun had purposefully cut off contact and wouldnât let you go, he had started his own rescue mission with private detectives and his friends in the police. They had gotten as far as Alaska by tracking down where Jaehyun's phone got last connected to the network. But Alaska was so remote and wide, their attempts were all in vain. When your father eventually had no options left but to inform the FBI shortly later, he wasnât able to tell the entire truth without making himself look suspicious. The investigators were searching everywhere but the area your father had suspected you to be.Â
In the end, your fatherâs reputation was still more important to him than finding you. You had caused many scandals throughout the years, and he had been immune to every single one of them. But the one that could completely destroy his business had been caused by himself alone. It was as absurd as it was real.
"I needed someone from the Marines since they could protect you and knew how to get around safely," he had said. "I wouldn't have done it if I didn't know you werenât in safe hands. I have let his background get thoroughly run through. He had this cabin in the woods where you could have resided for a while. It was perfect for you to learn how to live without all the luxury. Think of it like a retreat."
How gracious he was, sponsoring you a surprise retreat! He could have chosen someone who owned a house with running water and electricity right by the beach. Or someone he actually knew, a retired bodyguard, like in your sister's case.Â
Instead, he had chosen a complete stranger with a cabin in the deepest Alaskan woods, because he⌠what? Wanted to teach you a lesson on the top of bringing you to safety for a danger he had brought over the family entirely by himself?
"No!" your father had defended himself. "The location was just⌠a convenient offer from Jaehyun which I deemed fitting for you."
Convenient? He had chosen Jaehyun out of convenience? Because he had just put a fitting offer for you at the right time, and your father hadnât questioned it further?
"I needed to have the newspaper faked, otherwise you wouldn't have believed the entire situation since no word about it could go outside," he had said. "One can easily impersonate my handwriting, so I needed something more convincing in case you ever came to doubt the situation. Only that was made up. Everything else, what you said he told you, was real. I sent Jaehyun the most important information about you one month before for preparation, and I was in regular contact with him until he turned unresponsive when we returned. I always made sure you were safe and taken care of as long as I could."
That was the reason as to why you hadnât found more news on your family's seeming scandal, even in Canada, and why Jaehyun had been so persistent you stayed away from people. Just so that you wouldn't get suspicious of the entire situation. It had all only come out after they returned.
"You haven't been very successful in keeping me safe and protected, have you?" you had asked bitterly.
"We had a deal. You were supposed to stay with him until I gave him a sign that the situation has been cleared. But the connection broke after I told him you could come back home now, and I never found out where the cabin was exactly located except for that it was in that part of Alaska. I initially didnât think it would be so hard to find."
"You never validated where he would hide with me?" you had asked with anger crawling beneath your skin. "You just sent him money and called it a day? Everything would go well, because you're so mighty and wealthy, and everyone bows to you?"
He had faltered. "Well, no-"
"What if it had been someone else?" you had pressed the topic. "What if it had been someone with malicious intent who had truly kidnapped me and done worse things to me? How would you have justified that?"
"I told you, I had his background thoroughly run through after he had applied to that position."
âAnd you think only genuine people apply to that job offer or what?â
He had still been oblivious as to where he went wrong. He hadnât wanted to acknowledge his own fault. âIt was concealed as a one time bodyguard mission.âÂ
You had snorted ironically. âThen what about the accident he caused? You knew about that?â
âThe accident?â You had seen your father falter for the first time.
"Of course you donât know, because you donât care! No parents who truly love their children would have ever done something like this! You could have spoken openly with us, be transparent. Instead, you sent me away with a stranger, because you were scared any mishap could have ruined your business and wanted to teach me a lesson!" you had yelled. "In the end, you couldn't find me, because he didn't cooperate anymore and was not afraid of you!"
"I promised you, he will pay dearly for it! I did all this, because you're my daughter and I love you!"
"You are at fault!" you had then screamed. "You are at fault for sending me away with a stranger who had taken advantage of your poor judgment! It was all because of your negligence! If I hadnât had this accident, what further steps would you have taken to find me? Threaten his family? Actually, Iâm surprised you haven't done that yet."
âI went to see his family,â he had admitted. âNatually, if anyone would have known, then it was them. I flew all the way to their country to talk to them personally. But they knew nothing. They hadnât talked to him in more than a year. He had sent them all the money though and considering their living circumstances, they truly needed it. I couldnât make them responsible for something they clearly donât have control over, so I left again.âÂ
âStill, you werenât doing enough! Nobody knew the entire truth, because you couldnât even disclose the authorities to your plan! Iâm your daughter you had sent away with a stranger, and this was everything that you did! What would mom think?!â
"You don't get to talk to me like this when you were the one willing to stay with him in the end!" he had yelled back. "Didn't you say he had never threatened you? That you hadn't been held captive? You could have always come back if only you wanted to!"
"I would have come home if only I had known it was safe!"
"Tell me this again, but look into my face while you do so this time. Tell me you didn't allude yourself into thinking you were in love with such a criminal!"
"I-" You couldn't. "He's not a criminal!"
A liar maybe, but you had never seen Jaehyun as a vile criminal.
Your father returning shortly before Christmas was the time you had wanted to make up your mind about staying with Jaehyun. When your father had really contacted him for that purpose on the exact day he had told you, then it was a few days before you had made up your mind, most likely on the day on or around your self-declared Christmas Eve. Which meant Jaehyun had made that decision for you before you had made it yourself.Â
Your father had discarded you to a stranger the moment he thought you could contribute to his downfall, and Jaehyun had omitted the fact that your father was looking for you to keep you with him. You had been manipulated into making the decisions you had made, by your father and Jaehyun both.Â
You didn't know how to ever cope with betrayal to such an extent from the people you had loved the most.
If you had known your father's true situation prior to escaping, would you have gone with Jaehyun voluntarily? And if you had known that your father had called, would you have come back and left Jaehyun?
You had been looking for answers, but couldn't come up with any.
You had watched the vein on your father's temple pulse in upset. "Then how about you stop pretending and tell us where to find him!"
"I told you, I wouldn't know the way anymore!"
"You're protecting him, that's what you're doing! Do you know what your therapist calls such a behavior?"
You didn't want to hear it again.
"Hey." A soft voice pulled you out of your flashbacks. "The car's ready," your sister announced. "Let's go, shall we?"
You nodded and arose from the couch on which you had spent the most time since your return. Your bed in your old room from your childhood was the only other location. You didnât have many belongings to carry in the first place and only picked up a bag which a maid had prepared and had placed in the lobby.
"Will you tell me someday?" your sister asked in the car as you emerged from the underground parking lot. "What truly happened out there in the woods? What you donât tell the therapist and father?"
You didnât think sheâd understand. Nobody would. But to assuage her, you answered, "Maybe someday."
When you had been admitted to the hospital, they had run all kinds of tests on you. Youâd been perfectly healthy, but of course, they had noted traces of semen on your body. Your father had gone on a rampage while you were still in a coma.
When you had woken up, it was too late to clarify the nature of your relationship, so you never did. Everyone close to you knew there was more to the story. Why else would you not press charges, but even defend him if you were not stuck in some kind of twisted love story with your abductor in your injured head?Â
Again, the official story was that nobody knew who your abductor was and where you had been brought to since you had been in a coma. The real story was that you remembered everything and refused to reveal his location and hand him over to the FBI. Everyone was mad at you for that, including your father and therapist.Â
"Ta-daaa!"
Your sister had done a great job of making your apartment unrecognizable. Before, your tapestry and furniture had followed a dark theme as you wanted your interior to be a bit edgier than the typical setups recommended by designers. But your sister had followed this exact general thinking: Everything was beige, white, and bright now. There was no personality left in your apartment at all anymore.
"Do you like it?" She looked at you expectantly.
"Yes, thank you so much!"
It wasn't a lie. Strangely, you didn't feel like you needed to lie to her at all anymore.
Returning to your former apartment setup would have thrown you right back into a life that no longer existed for you. It had vanished the day Jaehyun tore you away from it. This⌠this was as basic as possible. No identity, not trace of life. Just like you.
"I'm glad!" your sister called out in relief. "So⌠let's unpack your stuff, shall we? Everything you need and own is still here. I just exchanged your toothbrush and stuff like that."
You had never felt the urge to rely on your little sister, but right now, you felt like you really needed her for the first time in your life. You didn't know what you would do without her, how to handle all this logistical stuff that seemed so trivial, yet was so important. She had thought about everything in your absence while your thoughts only revolved around Jaehyun.
"Can you stay here?" you asked carefully. "At least only for tonight? I don't want to be alone here yet."
Surprise spread across her face, and you wondered when you had last shared a bed or even a room with your sister. But now, she seemed to be the only person whose presence was bearable for you. A delicate smile then made her features appear younger than she already was, and you were suddenly thrown back to a time where you happily shared rooms and beds, long before your mother had died.
"Yes! Of course I will stay with you tonight and for as many more as you need me to."
You tried to think of a time when you had been more grateful to have a sister, but nothing came to mind. Even though she probably wanted to go back to her own home, she didnât let it show. But you were convinced she meant every word she had said.
You ordered Chinese food for dinner and watched a movie together that you had usually watched on an early Saturday morning when you were still children. Later, you laid in bed together, staring at the ceiling where the city lights reflected on the ceiling.
You couldnât stand leaving the windows open anymore. The noise of the bustling metropolis felt suffocating. After growing used to the silence and calm of the wild, every sound and light now irritated you. You missed the soft rustling of the trees, the melodic chirping of the birds, the fickle spitting of the fireplace, and Jaehyun's deep voice whispering sweet nothings into your ear.
You decided, as you and your sister laid there, that it was time to finally tell her.Â
"I could always come back, but I didn't. I've fallen in love with him, you know."
Your sister didn't say anything for a long time. Until she turned to the side and you did the same, the both of you now facing each other.
"Do you still love him?" she asked.
You had no answer to this.
"You know what the therapists said," she started unsurely. "That if something like this happens, if a feeling of missing him or even affection towards him had or would ever occurâŚ"
"⌠it was all because I wanted to survive, and itâs not real," you ended her sentence. "They have a term for this."
You stared at each other for a very long time again, until she asked, "And? You think it's that⌠term?"
You wanted to hug her for the sole question alone. No one had ever asked you that before. Nobody had asked you about your real feelings, your real thoughts. They all always wanted to plant something into your mind about what they thought you should be feeling. But your sister was really interested in what you were truly feeling independently from everyone else.
You didnât have an answer to her question yet, though.
"Tell me about him," she encouraged you. "Tell me how he was. Tell me everything you remember about him."
And so you did.Â
You told her about the night Jaehyun had taken you away and the sheer terror that came with it, about the cross country road trip that had nearly cost you both your lives, but changed everything - not only between you two, but about your entire perception on how you had been living life up until then, too. You told her about your routine in the woods and how you had not only learned to adapt to a simple lifestyle without electricity and running water, but how you had started loving this life - and Jaehyun - too.
When you finished, your sister wanted to know, "What do you feel when you think about these memories?"
You drew a rapid breath. "Longing. I long to go back. To that life, to him. And I know it's wrong, but-"
She interrupted you. "Who said it's wrong?"
"The therapist and father. They said what he did was kidnapping, even though in the end, I have willingly stayed. I should look at the facts clearly. They say he made me dependent on him, and I alluded myself into thinking he protected me and that I needed him to survive. They say now I'm only protecting him by refusing to disclose his exact location, because I feel guilty and sorry for him."
She didnât ask whether you were really lying about that certain point. Instead, she asked, "Would you have come back if you knew Jaehyun lied and we were searching for you?"
You let out a long sigh. "I've been asking this myself several times a day. Father is certain I wouldn't have come back. According to him, Jaehyun had manipulated me beyond the point of repair. He thinks I'm still⌠confused in the head."
"And out of all people, you want to listen to him? Especially after what father has done to us?"Â
There was an edge of indignation in your sisterâs voice, and you wondered whether it had always been there, and you had simply failed to notice. Her companion had been a retired bodyguard who had taken her to Mexiko where his family lived. He was an old friend of your father's. In some sense, she had been luckier than you.Â
She continued, "That was the reason I pushed for us to move out. I cannot⌠bear being in the presence of him right now after what happened to you. I cannot bear seeing you suffer in his presence."
Your mien froze in realization. It hadn't been about her only, but about the two of you. Although the past months had been way more comfortable for her, she was angry together with you, for you. It wasn't about you against your sister and your father any longer, but your sister and you against your father. How could you have been so blind?
You smiled meekly. "Your experience has been different from mine. I knew he always preferred you. That's why I never understood why he never made you his successor."
"It became clear to me lately," she confessed bitterly. "It was all to draw the attention away from him, from what he was doing wrong. The more scandals you created, the more convenient it was for him to conceal his own mishaps, because people were less focused on him. They were all focused on you instead. You had always been a scapegoat. I have only failed to realize it earlier."
How had you never thought of it before? It wasnât because he thought you were so fitting for that role or so capable of the skills that he kept you in this position despite your reputation.Â
It had always been for him. Everything heâd ever done was only for his own benefit.Â
How had you been so blind all this time? That was also why he had always threatened you, yet never made your sister the official heiress.Â
In the end, you would never have taken over the role of CEO, because he had never truly wanted you to. He would have either ruined the company himself or eventually passed the title on to your sister, leaving her to clean up the mess heâd been creating behind the scenes - if he hadnât managed to fix it by then himself. And even then, he would have held on to this position until one of you had you rip it from his cold, dead hands.
âHe is just as broken as we are since momâs death,â you said. âWhat heâs been doing⌠Letâs try to forgive him and move past this. It doesnât have to be right now, but we can take baby steps. It is what mom would have wanted.â
As much as you had tried to hate your father, you just couldnât. His wounds were probably as deep as yours, and what you had been doing to him all throughout the years wasnât exactly nice either. The only thing left to do was to leave this all behind you and start again, as a family.
"What I said about mom back thenâŚ" your sister continued, and you weren't sure whether you were ready for this conversation yet, even though it was long overdue. "It was wrong. I spent the last years trying to come to terms with what I've done to you with my hurtful words⌠but couldn't bring myself to apologize. I thought you hated me ever since then and I let you, because I felt so guilty. I tried so hard not to feel envious when I saw how much father doted on you. I thought, after what you've been through, you deserved at least that."
Life was so ironic, and your sister was too good of a person. You had been too selfish to have ever given her credit for that. "I thought he doted on you very much all this time, because he always scolded me and praised you, justifiably. I wanted him to make you the heiress, that's why I did all these things to constantly be on the news. I don't want to be the heiress, I never wanted to be. Mom just⌠talked a lot about it and even in death, I felt responsible to give her at least this. That was also why I have never brought up the courage to step down voluntarily. I thought I would hurt mom's feelings. I'd rather have father strip me of the responsibility once deemed unfit, by him and the public both."
"I'm so sorry," your sister whispered, and the shock in her voice was nearly palpable.
"I never hated you for what you held against me after the accident," you clarified. "You were only a child, full of grief. There was a time I wished it would have been me."
"Please don't say that," she pleaded. "I'd rather have you than no one."
"I wish father would think like that too, because otherwise I donât know how we will get over this. Sometimes, I see it in his eyes that he wishes mom was still here, with or without me. When he realized how the past months had broken me, I assume he quickly knew where he had gone wrong."
Simultaneously, you moved closer to each other, and you let yourself be held and comforted by your sister for the first time since you were children. You smiled, heart warm with sisterly love.
âIâll talk to father, and perhaps we can start family therapy sessions soon. Itâs long overdue, donât you think?â She brushed with her hand over your hair. âItâs all going to be okay. Youâll get your old life back.â
The only thing you omitted from her was the fact that you were unsure whether that was even possible in the first place.Â

September, New York City, USA
"Happy birthday!"
The candle flames flickered before your eyes as the waitress came over with a three-layered cake, and your friends started singing to you.
New friends you had made at the university you had enrolled in for the fall semester. Thanks to your fatherâs connections, it was a given that you had been accepted long after the regular deadline.
Last month, your sister had been officially named the heiress to your fatherâs company - under the condition that he would clean up all the corrupt stuff that could affect her. Of course he had complied when it was coming from her. There had been only a few mentions of this change in the newspapers and online, but nothing more.Â
As for you⌠you had bid farewell to your old lifestyle and, with it, disappeared from the media spotlight. Your days no longer revolved around shopping, meeting friends, and partying. You had shifted your focus entirely on your studies and rebuilding a new life, independently from your father's name.
While your bond with your sister had grown and became much better than ever before, you still struggled with the relationship with your father. Where you would consider your sister your best friend now, you would describe your father as a rather distant relative.Â
He was trying hard to make amends with you after the therapy sessions had opened his eyes about what his actions had put you through. You were open to forgiving him as you had suggested fixing everything in the first place. But it was harder than you had expected. He knew though, and he was patient.
Your life was perfect again.
Or so it seemed.
People you barely knew and who barely knew you had gathered around a large table in this huge, fancy restaurant. As they sang and celebrated, your eyes searched only for the familiar face of your sister, sitting right among them. Relief washed over you, calming you slightly when you finally spotted her encouraging smile.
She had been the one organizing the party - upon your request. According to your therapist, making new friends and falling back into familiar routines, but also inventing new ones, would help you build a stable life amidst all the wreckage and pain.Â
You should be happy on this special day, surrounded by so many people and your sister, sponsored by your father of course. But all you felt was an emptiness that hollowed you out from the inside, regardless of how much you wanted to fill it with joy.Â
Pain came and went, but this emptiness sat still, feeding on your emotions like a parasite and growing with each passing day. There was no cure to it, no medicine to make it stop.
You wondered how much time you had left until it would swallow what was left of you since that fateful day in the woods.
"Thank you,â you exclaimed once the singing had stopped and your guests looked at you expectantly. âI'm glad you all have come, I appreciate being able to celebrate this special day with you."
You also wondered when you had come so used to lying straight into people's faces.
As soon as everyone had personally congratulated you, most of whose names you had long forgotten already, you excused yourself to go freshen up in the restroom. But instead, you fled into the lobby of the building, fearing that if you stayed longer among these people, you would lose your mind.
You sat down on a couch, watching people entering and leaving, and wishing to be alone at the same time. You closed your eyes and took rhythmic, deep breaths. Your therapist advised you on doing so whenever your environment felt too overwhelming. She had assured you it would take time, but eventually, you would get adjusted to this life again.
But it felt like time had stopped and you weren't making any progress.
You slowly fluttered your eyes open, and your heart nearly stopped at a sight all too familiar to you.
A tall, young man with broad shoulders and muscular arms, clad in dark clothes. His hair was short again and he was hiding his face beneath the shadow of a black hood. Yet, you could still catch a glimpse of his eyes - and recognized them immediately. After all, you had longed to look into them for such a long time.
You blinked.Â
And then, he was gone.
"No!"
You jumped out of your seat and hurried to the pillars across the lobby where you had initially spotted him. But after circling them several times, you couldn't find a single trace of Jaehyun anymore. You ran to the exit door, pushing past people who got in your way.
Had you only hallucinated? Had it been wishful thinking?Â
He couldn't be here. He would never come here!
Yet, every day, you had asked yourself whether he was thinking about you as much as you were still thinking about him.Â
They said your mind was fooling you. That it continuously tricked you into thinking you had needed him to survive in the woods, being dependent on him for food and water, and you weren't capable of severing the emotional tie between you just yet, because you felt guilty.
But what did they know anyway?Â
You had never needed him to survive.Â
What you had needed from him was his belief in you - his support and his⌠love. And he had needed the same from you, with the same intensity, in the same way. You had always been equals.
"Jaehyun!" you yelled when you reached the outside. "Jaehyun!"
A few heads turned in your direction, curious about who was shouting a foreign name, but you didnât mind them. You spun around, looking left and right in search of the familiar figure. You accidentally ran into people and pushed past them while yelling Jaehyunâs name over and over again. You might have looked insane to bystanders, but you didnât care.
You were so sure you had seen him, and you were adamant on finding him. You had been accused of many things since your return, but you definitely weren't going crazy!
A strong grip on your arm made you shift around with a sudden wave of hope that nearly swept you away.
"Jae-!"
"What are you doing outside here?" your sister asked with much shock mirrored in her eyes. "Everyone's been worried, because you have been away for so long!"
"Jaehyun!" you announced, nearly out of breath from all the excitement. "I saw him! He was here!"
"What?" Your sister shook her head as though she couldn't believe what you had just said. "Who was here?"
"Jaehyun! I saw him inside! In the lobby! And I'm sure he went outside, I need to find him!"
You wanted to free yourself from your sister's grip, but she was holding you steadily. "He's not here," she said calmly. "It was in your head. He's not here."
"But I've really seen him!" you retorted. "He's been here!"
"If he was inside⌠don't you think he would have stopped when he saw you?" your sister asked, eyeing you a bit worriedly. "Don't you think he would have approached you instead of hiding and then running away? If he really wanted to see you⌠if he really was here⌠don't you think-"
"No!" you objected. "No," you then repeated - a bit quieter - before you started crying.
Your sister pulled you into a hug, right there on the busy streets of New York City. She was right. Jaehyun would never come back here. Not even for you.
"I don't know what's wrong with me," you sobbed in her arms. "Whatever I do, I cannot be happy."
"Perhaps, because you've been lying to yourself," she whispered into your ear for you to hear clearly. "You still love him."
And right there, among the city lights, you stopped lying to yourself any longer.
"Yes. Yes, I do."
____
October, New York City, USA
In one of your old boxes, you found the strawberry chapstick Jaehyun had given you.Â
You hadnât brought yourself to throw it away despite your therapist recommending so. You had been afraid that if you did, youâd lose something so precious that no amount of money could ever replace - yet you couldnât bear to see it every day, so you had kept it out of sight.
Now, you were glad it was still here. It was your silver lining.Â
It took you a week to empty out your entire apartment. You either gave away or donated almost everything inside, and transferred all your money to a secret account only you could access, keeping just a decent amount in cash. You wouldnât need more.
Then, it was time to bid your family farewell.Â
"We've talked about this," your therapist had said, "You know what this is. It's not real."
"As a matter of fact, I've never felt more real than when I was there."
"Do you really want to do this to your family?" she had asked. "After what they've been through to get you back?"
"My sister understands."
"I'm referring to your father."
"He sent me away in the first place, so these are the consequences of his own actions."
Your father didn't understand, unsurprisingly.Â
He had threatened to cut off your monthly allowance, take away your apartment and all your benefits, and even have your bank accounts and credit cards frozen. But you had only shrugged off his threats - as if any of it mattered to you anymore. In the end, he hadnât done any of it, as expected. He was still feeling guilty about what had happened and knew your mother wouldnât have condoned any of that.
Your father was afraid of losing the last part of you he still had. The only way for him to keep you tied to him was to let you go - so eventually, he did.
The day before your sister drove you to the airport, your father had visited to say goodbye. It was short and reserved, and you were aware there had been many more emotions boiling under his skin - but you gave him credit for hiding them. It was a step forward after all. You had promised to visit on Christmas, and he had promised to prepare your room for you when you did so.Â
It was a promise you had made to your sister as well. Every Christmas, you would return to spend the holidays with them. You were sure Jaehyun would let you. And perhaps, one day, he would accompany you to these visits, and they would hopefully welcome him with open arms. But it was a long way until there.
You boarded the plane to Juneau a day later.
There wasn't much that you carried with you. Only a bag pack and another bag with clothes for different seasons, nothing more.
âDonât you ever dare to turn off your phone!â she told you at the airport. âIf you donât text me at least once a day, Iâll go there and hunt him down myself!â
âDonât worry,â you reassured her. âI took two powerbanks with me.â
"Good. How will you go from there?" your sister then asked. "Do you know exactly where it is?"
âI know I need to get to Skagway first. From there, I will buy a cheap car and look for that specific road. I think I remember the area... It shouldnât be that hard. When I arrive, I will send you the location. Just in case.â
She lifted up her hand. âAs promised, itâs only for safety. I would never disclose it to anyone.â
You smiled. âI know. Thank you.â
You hugged your sister for a very, very long time. It felt good to have at least one person you could fully trust and completely rely on in the real world. An anchor, in case something went wrong. In case, one day, you woke up and didnât want all of this anymore, realizing it had been the entire wrong decision.Â
But right now, everything felt right.Â
____
You arrived in Juneau a little over ten hours later after a short layover in Seattle.Â
You rested for a night before going out the next day to buy a cheap car that you could use for the rest of the journey. Since the ferry to Skagway no longer sailed daily at this time of year, you had to wait a few days in Juneau before you could board the next officially scheduled one.
Seven hours later, in the middle of the night, you arrived in Skagway. You wanted to continue your journey the moment you disembarked from the ferry, but you came to your senses when you realized you wouldnât get very far in the dark. So you booked a room in the only hotel still open during the off-season and waited until morning.
The next morning, you packed your bags into the car and set off early. Before leaving town, you stopped at a supermarket to buy water, blankets, and other supplies you had run out of last winter, as well as things you thought might come in handy like extra bedding for cold nights. You also bought a mini fridge for the summer, just in case.
Your car was fully packed to the brim when you finally took off for your initial destination. You drove around the same area for two hours, trying to find the road Jaehyun had turned onto. It was so narrow and hidden that you had driven past it several times despite knowing that it must have been exactly there.Â
When it came down to hiding in plain sight, Jaehyun was a professional. Â
Only when you turned your car onto that small, unpaved road leading right into the deep woods, did it finally start to dawn on you what you were exactly doing. And then, you suddenly got scared. You had only thought about yourself and what your family might think. But what about Jaehyun?
What if Jaehyun didnât want you there anymore?
Your chest felt so tight that you wondered if you needed to stop and take a break to properly breathe again. But then again, the longer you prolonged facing him, the worse your anxiety would get. Even if you could stay with him, even if you eventually decided to return to your family yourself⌠You needed answers to all the questions nobody else had answers to.Â
You needed to know. Right now.Â
Time felt distorted, as if youâd been traveling for an entire day, when you spotted the cabin from afar.Â
According to the digital clock in the car, three hours had passed in reality. A lump built up in your throat and then sank into your stomach when Jaehyunâs car came into your vision, parked at the usual spot. You slowed your own vehicle down, approaching the house at walking pace. Your eyes didnât waver from the door, expecting a person to come out at any moment due to the noises you made while driving.
But nobody did.Â
Was Jaehyun gone?Â
It was peak mushroom season, so perhaps he had gone deeper into the woods to collect a basket full. Perhaps, he was behind the house chopping wood or stacking logs. Perhaps, he was by the stream to do the laundry. Perhaps-
You gasped when the door eventually did open and a tall figure appeared in the entrance door.Â
Your hands were shaking when you let go of the steering wheel and opened the door by your side. You thought your legs would give in when you slid down from your seat and your feet touched the bare forest ground. Was it only you or had the temperature dropped? Why were you suddenly so cold?
You already opened your mouth when you remained there, standing close by your vehicle.Â
But Jaehyun spoke first.
âHow long do you intend to stay?â he asked, slowly coming out of the door into your periphery, so you could see him better.Â
You, too, took a few steps forward, but the distance between you remained. No matter how much you wanted to fling yourself into his arms, something was still holding you back. There was no anger in his eyes, no pain. Just pure curiosity and surprise. He had probably already closed this chapter of yours, but you had opened it again.
âDepends on your answers,â you told him, and wondered why you suddenly sounded so out of breath.
He nodded. âYou looked so happy on your birthday. I truly havenât assumed youâd ever come back here.â
âSo, youâve really been there.â
The corner of Jaehyunâs lips tugged up, just slightly, and he lifted his chin. âSince you disappeared from all the news, I personally needed to make sure you were okay and living a happy life. I needed to make sure you moved on. It seemed like you did.â
âI never did.â
âNot even after you found out the truth?â he questioned you. âThe fact that lied to you about not having contact with your father? About your family searching for you?âÂ
âTell me what happened,â you urged him. âTell me why you did what you did. Why you didnât tell me. I want to hear it from you.â
Jaehyun took a long pause in which you could hear the rustling of the fallen leaves and the chirping of the free birds. No noisy cars, no noisy people, no noisy lights.Â
âBecause I was scaredâ he eventually responded, too quiet, ashamed. âOn Christmas Eve, I intended to inform you that it was all over. That you were free to go home. But when you told me about your feelings, I thought⌠why not let her come to terms with them first. Then you confessed your love to me a few days later, and I thought⌠why not let our relationship stabilize first. Then, winter came and I thought I couldnât bring you back at this time of the year, because the weather was so unpredictable and it was dangerous. So⌠why not wait for spring. I ignored your fatherâs attempts to reach me, because it was the easiest way to avoid confronting reality. Always, I came up with excuses, because I was so afraid of losing you once you knew there was a possibility of going back. I was afraid youâd leave me the moment you got the chance to.â
You drew your brows together in a frown. âI told you I made up my mind, didnât I? Did you think I lied? Did you not trust me?â
âOf course I did!â And Jaehyun quickly corrected himself, âI do.â
âApparently not. You said youâd let me go and wouldnât keep me here against my will,â you countered, âbut in the end, you did exactly that.â
âNo, it was not like that! I never made that decision for you. I just wanted you to make one yourself, without being influenced by your father.â
âBut you influenced me, canât you see?â His eyes widened as though he had really not known you felt that way. âYou made me believe my family didnât look for me, that they didnât want to contact me all while knowing the exact opposite was going on.â
Jaehyun dropped his head in defeat. âIâm so sorry. I was just so scared youâd change your mind⌠I didnât want to lose you too after losing everyone. If you had known, how would you have decided? Against me, right?â
You saw where he was coming from, really. He was far away from his estranged family, had lost his friends in an accident and was now all alone. He didnât know how to handle his needs, his wants⌠his love anymore. All he knew was that if he wanted something - or someone - he needed to hold onto it and protect it for as long as he could.
But that didnât give him a right to act the way he had acted towards you, and you had to tell him clearly outright.
âI really wanted to talk to my father about my decision to stay here, and I wanted to tell him myself. Whether I would have been influenced by his actions back then if only I had known they were already searching for me, I cannot say. Perhaps I would have, perhaps not. But even then, I already made up my mind and I, still, stay by it. Despite having been back to my old life. Despite everything, Iâm back here. Doesnât this say it all?â Jaehyun pricked up his ears as you continued, âMy father has not always made the best decisions, certainly not in the past few months. But he did make a few right ones among the many wrong ones. One of them was making my sister the heiress. And the other one was choosing you for me.â
Jaehyun deadpanned, âI donât think he shares your opinion.â
âNo, he certainly doesnât,â you confirmed. âHe explained to me that he had ordered you not to say a single word about the fact that you were in constant contact over a phone. So, I get that part up until Christmas Eve. But the rest⌠Jaehyun, I-... To a point, I comprehend. I feel where your fears were coming from. But have I ever given you a reason to doubt my feelings? I stayed when it was so cold, I could barely sleep at night. I stayed when we only had oats to eat for days. I stayed when I found suspicious tools, thinking you would have kidnapped me. I stayed when you rejected my feelings. Despite not getting a sign from my father, I could have always escaped if only I wanted it enough.â
âI never had bad inventions, please believe me. I didnât want to cause anyone, especially not you, pain. I was too selfish. It just felt too good to be true,â he admitted. âLike a dream. And when that accident happened, I knew I couldnât continue dreaming any longer. I thought it was better if you remembered me as the person they portray me to be in the news. Like that, you wouldnât have suffered - only me, like I deserve. But now youâre here⌠Why are you here? Did you come to get your answers and will now leave again?â
You inhaled sharply, suddenly nervous again. âLike I said back then, I have decided to stay here. It took me a while, but I came back with the intention to stay. With or without your influencer, this is my decision.â
You watched Jaehyunâs Adamâs Apple bop up and down. âYou know what they say this is⌠When you return to someone wh-â
âDo you think so too?â you interrupted him. âDo you think Iâve returned, because I feel dependent on you? Iâve returned out of guilt? That Iâve alluded myself into thinking I love you, but in reality, itâs some co-dependency Iâve developed throughout the time I was here? Tell me the truth. Tell me you think so and I will immediately get into the car and never set foot here again.âÂ
âYou know the truth as much as I do,â he said slowly. âI just wonder why you still want to be with me. After all, Iâm a bad person.â Â
âIf you are, then so I am, because I left my old life and my family behind to live with you here from now on.â
Jaehyun seemed honestly very much confused. âI just donât know why.â
âBecause youâve seen me at my worst and turned me into someone worth loving despite all my faults. You showed me to accept and love myself when nobody else did. You showed me the beauty of myself and of this world when I was too blind to see all that. And you loved me all throughout that. How could I not love you too?â
Jaehyun took a step in your direction. âBecause I lied to you. Because I want you all to myself only. And because all I was able to give you was a strawberry chapstick from the gas station when other people can give you the world and so much more.â
Your hand reached into the pocket of your jacket where you felt the small item he had referred to. It meant the entire world to you. You didnât need more than that.Â
âIâve been given the entire world,â you said. âAnd it has never been enough. It has never made me happy. Here, with you⌠this is what makes me feel happy and fulfilled. I wouldnât trade it for the world.â
âDo you⌠forgive me?â Jaehyun took another step towards you. Then another one. âDo you⌠trust me?â
You could have answered both questions with yes, but you didnât want to give him this full reassurance just yet. After all, he had hurt you deeply. But you were here, and you were willing to try. If everything went down, you were always free to go. There would always be this back door this time.Â
You never knew what the future held. Perhaps, in a few months, in a few years, youâd have enough and wanted to leave. Perhaps, Jaehyun wanted it too. But until then, you would put your entire will and heart into settling here.
âI brought you a phone,â you changed the topic instead. âYou will use it to call your family. I talked to them. They are worried dead about you.â
Jaehyun sounded honestly shocked. âI broke contact in fear they would blame me for the accident just like everyone else. I didnât think-â He faltered.
Jaehyun had to learn how to stop making decisions for other people out of fear of being rejected or left. Love stemmed from a lot of emotions, and several ones of them were trust, belief and loyalty. His past had broken him to the point of rejecting the people who loved him or caging them instead. And neither was healthy.Â
âIf someone loves you, you have to keep faith in them, Jaehyun,â you explained. âYour family will forgive you, because they love you. They long have. You donât have to interfere in any way.â
âAnd you?â He took another step forward, shortening your distance and asking again, âAfter all, you still love me too, you came back. Then, will you forgive me too? Someday? Please just give me that. I cannot stay around you, knowing you will secretly blame me for the rest of your life.â
He was right. You wanted to tell him, but couldnât bring yourself to do so right now. Everything was so new, you had to start over from here. It was not the right timing when you had just arrived and your tumultuous feelings hadnât quite settled yet.Â
He deserved to know, of course. But the wound was still fresh. You could feel it healing already though. Perhaps, faster than you had assumed.
âYes,â you then answered. Perhaps in a few months, in a few weeks, perhaps tomorrow already. âI will.â
Jaehyun closed the distance between you and pulled you into a warm hug. You had thought you were home in New York City, but home had been here the entire time.Â
Home was the sound of rustling trees in the distance and chirping birds in the sky. Home was the rushing of the stream and the flicker of the fireplace. Home was waking up to crisp air and going to bed watching the stars. Home was the sound of Jaehyun chopping wood and the scent of pines attached to him at all times.
You felt Jaehyunâs warm lips right on the parting of your hair and you feared your heart was going to burst with happiness.Â
âThatâs enough for me,â he whispered and you could feel his embrace tightening around you, his warm breath on your head. âI can wait. As long as you stay by my side.â
The world might see you as bad people, but neither of you were. Not here.Â
There was Jaehyun, and there was you - two people who had never quite fit into a world that demanded more than you could give. You had needed to survive, Jaehyun had needed to survive. You no longer owed anything to the world or its people.
Now, you would build your own little world. And you would live.
Right here, in the Alaskan woods.
____
Look at you.
You sleep so safely and soundly next to me, as if you havenât come apart beneath me just hours ago. The moonlight illuminates your soft features, and I lift up my hand to trace the outline of your face - but I hesitate.
What if this is a dream and you vanish the moment I touch you?Â
After everything Iâve done, you cannot be here.Â
For many months, I have dreamed you would come back despite knowing that you had no reason to. Iâve always been a selfish person, and I secluded myself from the rest of the world so I wouldnât hurt or disappoint anyone dear to me ever again.
Yet, Iâve done this to you. I lied to you, because I was afraid of losing you. Because I didnât believe in your love enough. After all, how could anyone love someone like me?
ButâŚ
Look at you.
You came back to me.
When I first built this cabin, I couldn't imagine anyone else stepping a foot inside. Just the thought of you being here with me made my skin crawl, but I couldnât reject the money your father had offered me. It was just a few weeks, I could endure it, I had thought.Â
I expected to deal with a spoiled, bratty princess who didnât care about anyone and anything. Honestly, it would have made things way easier for me. But you cared, you always have.Â
You brought me a coke when I hadn't asked for it, just because you thought I might like it. You stopped me from culling a deer, because you felt like it would die for vain. You thanked every small animal for its sacrifice when you found it in your trap, because you felt bad for it. You learned to adapt to a lifestyle unfamiliar to you and didnât complain about the need to abstain from luxury. You showed me the scars you had hidden from everyone and all the invisible pain you were still carrying around.Â
You were nothing like the media portrayed you. And that was when my downfall began. When I realized not everyone in this world is so full of hatred. That there was still beauty in it if only I looked closely enough. My only mistake was that I didnât know what to do once I discovered it.Â
The day of your accident, I painfully realized that you werenât safe with me, out here in the woods. You were so inexperienced, so fragile, I would need to fear losing you every day due to circumstances I have no influence on like back then when you nearly fell off the cliff. You have been through so much already, I shouldnât add on to your scars. So I brought you back to where your family was, where you were safe.Â
Yet, I couldnât let you go.Â
I drove into town every other day to check the magazines and newspapers. I even went to the library and used their computers to look around the internet for a sign of you. But despite the initial news about your so-called abduction, you never appeared in the media again - and neither did I. You didnât reveal my location, my identity. Were you protecting me this entire time?
I needed to know what you were doing, if you were safe, if you were⌠happy. Even without me. Perhaps, like this, it would have been easier for me to move on as well. So I had to make sure about that myself and drove all the way back to New York City.
I hate the reckless people, the bustling streets, and the bright city lights. But you seemed so happy on your birthday, so I put all my hatred aside. If you loved it here, then I would support it. If you have decided to stay here, then I would let you.Â
But look at you.Â
You are now lying next to me.Â
And as I finally trace the soft skin on your face, I let out a quiet sigh of relief. You are still here, and you are real. This is all real. Â
I flinch when I suddenly feel something soft on my cheek. Your warm hand. I didnât know you were awake.
âCanât sleep?â you ask, and I smile.Â
âIâm afraid that if I wake up, you will be gone.â
You wrap your arms around me and pull me down to you. With a sleepy voice, you whisper, âI wonât go anywhere. In the morning, I will still be here. And the next morning, and the next morning⌠Believe me.â
âI believe you.â
I know I donât deserve an ounce of your forgiveness.Â
