liminal space inspo:

one of the most recognisable liminal themes of grass planes and perfectly blue sky, suburban houses for some of that delicious #americandream

connecting piece:

checkered path into unknown, a theme I wanted to maintain for all 4 of them. the exit itself is in the cloud, just like June, one with the wind

ideas and symbols:

memories of childhood and self washing away into the distance, water wind clouds all as a manifestation of her hero of breath status and self perception at large

a look back at something that is so far behind but also right in front of you, end of game, freedom, undecided future and a familiar tire swing

thoughts:

want to add that heir of breath, embodiment of freedom and wind and being so so light etc. is probably my fav thing about June and how it interacts with her gender, body and mind

2. Rose

liminal space inspo:

imagery of technology and other common objects being somewhere a human couldn't possibly be, some pastel vaporwave goodness, early 2000 3D asset stairs that all lead to nothing, and the reflection of sun at sea, sparkly and beautiful

ideas and symbols:

the land of light and rain forming her face and her eyes are teary being well the Rain part of it all, furniture, books and computers and other components of a usual life floating away, sinking, breaking down and returning to dust to form a sea floor. a tiny martini glass on the edge

connecting piece:

instead of the exit being withing arms reach like on June's piece, Roses is inside her own mind, something something seer of light being able to see all but her own mind, how overbearing infinite knowledge can be to one huh

I love this comic so much it always is a huge inspiration on anything with Rose I ever made. I don't even know why it stuck(no pun intended) with me so much but I just can't get it out of my head whenever I think about Rose

so this guy huh

ps1-2 video game graphics, late 20 century fantasy art, the entirety of monument valley, deathvlei

it's pretty simple, land of heat and clockwork, huge huge huge cathedral like uncanny architecture that makes you feel so so so tiny

connecting piece:

door is right in front of you, you just need to get to the other side

ideas and symbols:

observing your life, your bros life, death and your own insignificance in the face of it all

knighthood, being on a quest, keeping something safe and or under control. or else dead daves start piling up, and that's never good

thoughts:

on my recent reread I specifically got the part of terezi witnessing doomed daves death. holey moley it's good

note: this one took me way too long. I had another version but I hated it so much I redrew Daves part completely at the point of progress where everything was pretty much finished. no regrets tho. wish I came up with a way to include davesprite here but well

bonus inspo:

the overall idea of this piece in particular got delivered to me by a vision I had while watching dawtde. yk knighthood of it all. and liminal factor is present as well. being responsible for so much. to oversee to keep to guard to put your life on the line between danger and what's dear to you.

4. Jade

oh god this is a hard one. I worked on her all through out and remembering my exact thought process won't be easy

liminal space inspo:

her liminal space is space, which is liminal. okay okay that's not an explanation. background is old game 16 bit type graphics, being well, an endless space

ideas and symbols:

a witch of space, gazing at her friends from a far far away star. looking closer and closer, being careful not to mess anything up, and when she almost reaches them the game crashes. truly you never realise loneliness of space and yet it's endlessness until you get too close to the sun (green sun pun intended).

growing up is hard and nobody understands

in that she is kind of similar to Rose's piece, her being both all space around the exit and the exit itself.

note: want to add that the planets are fully hand drawn, I know I cooked when lowas looks almost identical to the og sprite
