India and its obsession about mangoes is not unknown to the world.
Mangoes are divided into two major groups from the point of their origin, sub tropical Indian group and tropical South-east Asian groups.
The mango tree also called as mangifera indica are grown in different parts of the country. There are more than 500 varieties, while most of them are ready to give fruits in summers few of them give double crop.
India is the largest producer of mangoes and yet it's highly difficult to find Indian mangoes in the world market. Despite producing tonnes of mangoes,the largest in the world, Indian mangoes occupy less than 1% of international mango trade. We consume almost all the mango produce of our country without letting it go waste!!!
The countries other than India that produce large amount of mangoes are China and Pakistan.
Mango is the national fruit of India as well as Pakistan.
The cost of mangoes range from ₹60/kg to the most expensive Alphansoes ₹200 a single peice.Though so expensive but Indians can't go an year without mangoes.
Different parts of the country have a little different time of mangoes rippening. The south, near to equator gets heated first and the season's first mangoes come in south and in west too, while other parts of the country enjoy their delicious delight a little later.
The fact that mangoes can be used in different unique forms make it more festive. One can find no restraunts in the country that do not have summer special mango menu card. All the hotels, cafes, restraunts try all the different forms and even create new forms to eat this fruit called Mango. To anyone's surprise the craze of mangoes is to such an extent that people never say no to try the different versions, tastes and cuisine of this fruit. Not only do they try but also appreciate. People in India tend to believe that anything and any form of food which involves use of mangoes in proper ways is automatically gonna taste great to them.
India is country of different languages, religions and traditions and that is why we call India a diverse nation. These all colours of our country might not be celebrating every festival together. But, Mangoes.
Mangoes bring people from all caste, race,sex,religion,language and state together to celebrate this auspicious time of the year.
It's unbelievable that how big companies use the mangoes season in their marketing strategy. Though any other kind of fruit may not be considered a luxurious present. But mangoes come here too.Companies send boxes full of mangoes as a greeting to their major partners, customers and suppliers. Also it has become like a ritual for many of them.
So many varieties of mangoes come from different parts of the country depending on time of ripening. The Alphonsos from Ratnagiri are considerd the best variety, though few think they are too sweet.
Badamis and tart Totapuris ripen earlier. Delicious North Indian varieties including plump, green Langras, and elongated Dussehris and Chausas become available a few weeks later, as they ripe around May and June.
People tend to shop for mangoes and enjoy identifying the variety of mangoes and their region of origin just like a fine wine based only on taste and smell.
New businesses dedicated solely for mangoes retail are set up and you can find these only during the season. It resembles to the fairs that are organised for the festivals and are moved or closed soon after the festival ends.
It's also a point to look that even after the season, the festival is over, people can't get rid of the mango craze. This is the reason why a mango drink is the India's most liked beverage brand. Maza a brand owned by coca-cola, is the best selling drink in the country. It's competitirs include PepsiCo's Tropicana Slice and Parle Agro's Frooti.
People of the country though witness the scorching sun and boiling heat, loo and sun stroke cases during the harsh season but with all of that too, they still wait for the summers to arrive because it's Festival not Mango.
