Shiro's backstory. (THIS DOES NOT MATCH UP WITH THE CANON NGE LORE!)

The first (or the ones before the first) generation of pilots before NERV started using Unit-01.

The testers and pilots of Unit-00 were a group of delicatedly choosen men who's brainwaves had the closest match up with Unit-00.

Living together under the same roof, Roy was always a playboy but cared a lot about the younger pilots, always taking more on his shoulder than needed, he is said 'it impressed the ladies'. He passed away in battle on Mission 9.

Adam was an overly serious, unashamed coffein addict. He was only himself next to animals and when alone with his comrades. Mission 12 with an Angel went downhill with him in the pilotseat. He's laying in coma for the second year now in NERV's own hospital. They never officially retired him.

Curtis was quiet, calm and calculative. He smiled often and kept the tension between the pilots minimal. Most stable harmonization out of the four pilots. Adam called him a 'people's pleaser' for which Curtis broke his nose. That's how they became friends. Fail of Mission 14. Curtis is now using a wheelchair. He moved back to his home country, where NERV is manufacturing an EVA Unit. (Possibly 05 but the information is classified.) They never officially retired him.

Shiro, the youngest, was always trying to impress people and to brake all the highscores he set the previous month. Synchronisation stabilized overtime. He piloted Unit-00 as long as it was pilotable, until Mission 18 (the Unit is under massive repair) and NERV has him in immediate backup in case the Angels decide to show their faces again before the new pilots are ready.

Shiro is now 28 years old and still working with NERV. He tries to keep the new, younger pilots in check and to teach them what he can. He and his team were soldiers. These are just a bunch of 'kids' who don't even know about what happened to his team.

He visit's Adam in the hospital from time to time, catching him up on things that happened. He makes sure Roy has fresh flowers on his grave, and talks to Curtis on the phone sometimes.
