You noticed something was different the moment I came back.

Not all at once.

At first, it was the way I moved a little slower when I walked into the room. Then the way I shifted before sitting down, like my body needed more space than before. Then the way my clothes held onto me tighter, pressing into places that used to be easier to hide.

I tried to act normal.

Like my trip hadn’t changed anything. Like I hadn’t come back softer, heavier, more aware of myself with every little movement.

But you looked at me for too long.

And smiled.

“They were right,” you said.

I felt my face get warm.

“Who?”

“Your family.”

I looked away, even though I already knew what you meant.

They had been saying it since I came back. That I looked fatter. That it was obvious now. That my body was changing.

I hated how much I liked hearing it from you.

You stepped closer, watching the way my belly rested softer than before, the way I didn’t even try to hide it this time.

“You feel it too, don’t you?”

I didn’t answer right away.

Because the truth was, I did.

Every step. Every tight seat. Every time I had to move slower than I remembered.

And the worst part was that I loved knowing you could see it too.

Should my belly hang any lower?
