the love between the ocean and the moon if that's too vague? <3 i always love your writing and you are always so great. <3
The moon asked the sun, āWhat do you know of love?ā
āIt burns,ā said the sun. āIt brightens. It is something you make and then give away.ā
āDonāt listen to him,ā said the clouds. āThis big ball of gas doesnāt know what heās talking about.ā
āYes, I do,ā said the sun. āWho but me makes the roses grow?ā
āWe do,ā said the clouds. āLove nourishes, like the rain. We turn the hills green and fill the creeks so they will sing in their creekbeds.ā
āWhy do you ask?ā said the sun.
āI think I might be in love,ā said the moon. āI am trying to understand.ā
So the moon went and looked at the deserts. They were dry and hot and empty. āSee?ā said the clouds. But the deserts were still beautiful.
And so the moon went and looked at the creeks in their beds, and they were cool and wet and full. And they were beautiful too.
āWhat do you think?ā the moon asked the sky. āI want to know if I am in love.ā
āAsk the earth,ā said the sky, and so the moon asked the earth.
āThe clouds cover me,ā said the earth. āThey make me bloom. The sun warms me. Without them I would be cold and dry.ā
āYou would be ugly without them. That is love?ā
āI would be cold and dry,ā said the earth, ābut not ugly. You are cold and dry, my little one, and you are beautiful.ā
āNot like you,ā said the moon. āNot like the ocean.ā
āNo one is like me. No one is like you,ā said the earth.
āI feel loveliest when she holds my light,ā said the moon.
āWho is it that you love, my child? What kind of love do you wish?ā
āAre there different kinds?ā the moon asked.
āThe sun warms me and pulls me in. The clouds cover me, when they remember. The sky turns every color for me. How do you and yours love?ā
āWe dance,ā said the moon, and they knew she meant the ocean. āI push and she pulls. I rise and set, she rises and ebbs. She pushes, I pull. We go around and around and I watch her tides and I do not think I will ever tire of calling her beautiful. Is that love?ā
āIt is only your own reflection you see on the oceanās surface,ā scoffed the clouds. āIt is like when the sun sets, and calls us beautiful, but it is only his own colors he loves.ā
āI love her even when I shine no light,ā said the moon. āMaybe I love her most then.ā
āYou only love her because she follows where you lead,ā said the sun.
āIt is a dance,ā said the moon.
āIt is self-centered,ā said the clouds. āBossy. Mean.ā
āShe is the heart of my orbit,ā said the moon. āI will live my life by her until she is gas and I am dust and the universe is cold and dead.ā
And the sun and the clouds were quiet and went away, and the stars came out from where they had been listening.
āIs this love?ā said the moon.
āYou are not asking the right people,ā said the stars.
āI have asked the sun, who burns,ā said the moon. āI have asked the clouds, who cover. I have asked the sky, who stays forever. I have asked the earth, who made me.ā
āBut have you asked the ocean, who loves you?ā said the stars.
āOh,ā said the moon.
And so the moon went down to the ocean and asked, āIs this love?ā
And the ocean said, āYes.ā
