One of my favorite scenes of the GoT finale was that first scene with Arya and Jon. It really is reminiscent on their relationship and how different it is after being apart for so long. At first when he sees Arya, he’s obviously shocked.
Hes almost…angry at her, for being somewhere she wasn’t supposed to be. He does the slightest double take before turning to her, and his eyes grow wide with pure shock. In this next gif, though, he’s angry.
He says “what are you doing here?” Like he’s disappointed, and he has that initial look of scolding her. But in a split second, his expression completely changes to worry. I love this gif, because it perfectly shows how unfamiliar this is to him. He hasn’t been a big brother to anyone in so long, for a second he forgot that he is supposed to be the one protecting her. At first he’s shocked and maybe even disappointed, but that so quickly shifts into worry and softness. He takes in her appearance, how dirty and bloody and broken she looks, and it makes him concerned. He whispers “hey” to her so gently, it seems almost uncharacteristic of Jon Snow.
He finally reaches out to her, and Arya has this look on her face that says that this is just as unfamiliar to Jon as it is to Arya. Just like we saw in 8x01, we have an example of Jon not realizing how grown up Arya has gotten without him. The way he joked by saying Sansa “thinks she’s smarter than everyone”, his teasing smile was expecting her to laugh right along with him. But she didn’t, because she’s grown. We see something so similar here, but even more sweet. Sure, Jon may be years out of practice as a big brother, but it’s nice to see his over protective reflexes are still there.
