it happens so quietly that even he doesn't understand it at first. castiel has seen thousands of people in his existence; humans laughing, crying, praying, fighting, loving… and yet something about you makes him stop in the doorway and simply stare. you're not doing anything extraordinary, you're just there, talking with sam about something mundane with your hands moving animatedly as you explain yourself, a little smile tugging at the corner of your mouth.

and castiel is completely captivated: he doesn't know why his attention keeps returning to you. he tells himself he's observing, studying and trying to understand the person sam and dean have apparently grown so fond of. but then you notice him watching and smile directly at him, warm and effortless, and something strange happens inside his chest.

“oh,” he thinks. it's not a particularly sophisticated thought for an angel of the lord but it's all he has.

after that, castiel begins finding reasons to be near you. perfectly legitimate reasons, of course. he needs to ask you something: dean sent him, sam mentioned you or he happened to be passing through. none of these explanations are particularly convincing and especially when he starts appearing beside you without warning simply because he likes being around you.

he likes listening to you talk, he likes the way you say his name, he likes when you smile at him, even though he doesn't quite understand why it makes him want to smile back. eventually, dean catches him staring at you from across the room.

“you like them.”

castiel looks genuinely confused… and for perhaps the first time in centuries, an angel finds himself discovering that being enamoured feels remarkably similar to being human.

sam returns home from a mission, slightly bruised, only to find you asleep on the couch. as he puts down his bag against the wall, he walks over to rest his hand on your cheek. "hey, silly girl," he calls softly. "i’m back…" he watches you as you open your eyes. once the realization hits you, you embrace him, putting your arms around his neck. "i’m sorry," you apologize. "i was waiting for you and fall asleep." he smiles, reassuring you to not apologize. after all, it wasn’t your fault. "it’s okay. the flight has been delayed a little, but i’m here now." not wanting to wait any longer, sam slides one arm under your knees and the other behind your back, lifting you from the couch. "and, now that i’m back," his voice deepens, making you shiver, "i can take of you. would you like that?" you chuckle and nod, pressing your lips to his cheek. "i would love to, cap."
