My Design Studies

A little trip away from my practice. When finding out there was a Jenny Saville Exhibition on I could not wait to see it. I have selected some photos to share but these do not present the raw emotional feeling you get when you walk into the presence of these paintings. Such an amazing artist and I’m so glad I got the opportunity to get a first hand look at these paintings. Time to get myself back into painting portraits!

Model making! So we’ve started to delve into the brief and I’m looking at all the categories surrounding our brief. Here I’m looking to develop a backpack concept for carrying loose food, trying to spark change in the way we do our food shopping!

All thats left to do is decide on the shape and the method to attach the seat. 

I found that my skill with a chisel is in need to work... My cuts could be a lot cleaner and smooth. However, I feel happy with this quick lap joint and look forward to making it into a stool!

For a quick little project to get me more familiar with wood, I’m going to attempt a 3-point lap joint. Hopefully, I’m not too unfamiliar with wood so that I can achieve a good output!

Here we are in the workshop with our prototype, working out the pivot point and the leverage we need.

It’s good to be back!

Moving quick. I knew as soon as I decided screen printing wasn’t right, that I needed to get this done quickly. Here is a linocut which is the edging to the design, I shall be relief printing from this point onwards!

Prints. A lot more difficult than I thought. After I came into printmaking with my 20 pre-cut sheets, only 7 we’re registered without bleeding after just the 3rd layer. I almost feel I’m pushing myself to do something quite difficult on my first experience. A 10 colour screen print requires a lot of precision. From here, I think I shall be moving to develop a lino-cut!

I’m currently working on my personal project in my book elective, and I’m looking into materiality, He use of this natural wood as a book end may be quite nice. Need to keep developing however!

Great trip! This week, I was able to get into the Glasgow Print Studio. All of these prints interested me, wether it was the design, or the technique or registration.

3D prints, after doing some tutorials on Solidworks, it was time to venture into surfaces! Here are 2 new prints made by using the surface loft tool. Both came out well, however the use of support material had left its mark. Really want to get on a machine with water soluble support material to increase surface finish!

Stencils! I’ve separated the layers from my photoshop image. Printed them on tracing film, ready to put on a screen!

Exploring the use of surfaces, and particularly lofting surfaces! Hopefully I’ll have some 3D models of this soon!

G . F Smith. Brilliant! I dropped this company an email on Thursday and they’ve sent me our their ‘Collection’ of papers, all neatly and beautifully bound. With this I can start exploring what papers/boards and finishes I’d like to try with my printmaking module, while also considering binding a few books in different papers!

Materiality: This is exactly the surfaces I love to see. Also this provides an example of the surfaces I’d be interested in printing on. Building up a multi-layered platform and seeing how the ink transposes onto the different surfaces.

I’ve struggled to get hold of broken power tools, so I decided to delicately take a part my Dremel. Just like the Drill, the casing is 2 shot injection moulded, and each part is designed with housing all the electronics without having to screw in place. The use of bosses allow the screw thread to grip the joining part easily and the webbing makes the part much more robust. From here, I can look at how I can tackle housing the electronics in a multi-tool with hinged features. Time to get modelling!
