𝚂𝙾  𝙼𝙰𝙽𝚈  𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙶𝚂  𝚃𝙾  𝙰𝚂𝙺  ;   𝚆𝙷𝙴𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁  𝙷𝙴𝙻𝙻  𝙸𝚂  𝙷𝙾𝚃  𝙾𝚁  𝙸𝙵  𝙷𝙴  𝙷𝙰𝚂  𝚆𝙸𝙽𝙶𝚂  .   amabel’s  lips  are  a  soft  line  ,   watching  the  day  and  daniel  over  a  thin  bone - china  teacup  .   she  will  never  tire  of  the  unadulterated  wonder  hidden  in  the  centre  of  his  eye  at  the  earth  .

𝙷𝙴  𝙷𝙰𝚂  𝙱𝙴𝙴𝙽  𝙻𝙸𝚅𝙸𝙽𝙶  𝙾𝙽  𝙰𝙸𝚁  ,   𝙸𝙽  𝚃𝙷𝙴  𝙱𝙴𝚂𝚃  𝙰𝙽𝙳  𝚆𝙾𝚁𝚂𝚃  𝙼𝙴𝙰𝙽𝙸𝙽𝙶𝚂  𝙾𝙵  𝚃𝙷𝙴  𝙿𝙷𝚁𝙰𝚂𝙴  .   the  hullabaloo  of  his  return  is  christened   ( ha  !! )   by  sunday  supper  and  an  open  window  ,   amabel  sets  the  third  apple  pie  of  the  afternoon  on  the  sill  to  cool  .

she’s  ashamed  to  say  that  he  catches  her  off - guard  .   she’s  in  a  tizzy  ,   trying  to  remember  if  she  set  aside  pickles  in  the  larder  for  tomorrow’s  tea  .   hell  hath  no  fury  on  a  hungry  demon  ,   after  all  .

daniel  pounces  when  her  back  is  turned  ,   hugging  her  tight  and  making  amabel  shriek  with  laughter  .   she  knows  the  faint  smell  of  sulfur  anywhere  ,   and  the  warbly  voice  telling  her  surprise  !!

she  spins  around  ,   fighting  to  free  her  hands  so  she  can  mock - beat  them  against  his  chest  .   she  tosses  her  head  back  ,   the  white  waterfall  of  her  hair  floating  and  frizzy  .

𝙳𝙴𝙼𝙾𝙽𝚂  𝙰𝙽𝙳  𝙷𝙴𝙻𝙻𝚂𝙿𝙰𝚆𝙽  𝙼𝙰𝙺𝙴  𝙶𝙾𝙾𝙳  𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙿𝙰𝙽𝚈  ,   she  doesn’t  know  why  the  poor  man  keeps  fidgeting  like  he’s  done  a  great  sin  simply  for  existing  .   amabel  quirks  a  pale  eyebrow  and  makes  a  sound  like  his  condition  is  something  serious  .

❝      𝑖  𝑠𝘩𝑎𝑙𝑙  𝑛𝑜𝑡  𝑤𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒  𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟  𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒  𝑏𝑦  𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔  𝑖  𝑐𝑎𝑛  𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑡𝘩𝑖𝑛𝑔  𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡  𝑖𝑡  ,      ❞      she  admits  .      ❝      but  even  if  i  could  ,   i  doubt  very  much  i  would  want  to  ,   seeing  as  there  is  nothing  at  all  the  matter  .   you’re  just  half - something  ,   it  takes  a  good  deal  more’n  that  to  make  someone  evil  .      ❞

but  she  can  see  he  remains  unconvinced  .   mabel  taps  a  soft  ,  wrinkled  finger  against  a  spike  on  his  cheek  .

𝚂𝙷𝙴  𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙺𝚂  𝙾𝙵  𝙰  𝙱𝙰𝙳  𝙵𝙰𝙸𝚁𝚈  𝙶𝙾𝙳𝙼𝙾𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁  𝙻𝙰𝚈𝙸𝙽𝙶  𝙰  𝙲𝚄𝚁𝚂𝙴  .   it’s  what  it  sounds  like  to  her  ,   after  all  ,   the  horror  of  someone  whispering  to  one  so  young  that  they  will  not  sleep  forever  .

it  is  a  choice  where  she  is  concerned  ,   for  who  could  blame  a  human  creature  who  fears  death  ?   but  it  wasn’t  so  in  sinclair’s  case  .

𝙷𝙴  𝙸𝙽𝚂𝙸𝚂𝚃𝚂  𝙷𝙸𝚂  𝙸𝙽𝙲𝙰𝙽𝙳𝙴𝚂𝙲𝙴𝙽𝚃  ,   𝚁𝙰𝙳𝙸𝙰𝙽𝚃  𝙻𝙾𝚅𝙴  .   he  says  it  makes  him  stupid  but  he  was  always  stupid  ,   and  what  charlie  feels  could  make  a  geiger  counter  sing  .   

amabel’s  seen  poison  in  the  eyes  of  people  before  ,   not  just  teenage  boys  turned  idiot  by  their  wayward  hearts  .   she’s  seen  misnomers  both  outrageous  and  tragic  ,   his  is  neither  .   his  is  an  ordinary  miscommunication  that  she  has  no  choice  but  to  try  and  right  .   she  is  practical  ,   after  all  .

❝      𝑜𝘩  ,   𝑐𝘩𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑖𝑒  ,   𝑦𝑜𝑢  𝑎𝑟𝑒  𝑛𝑜𝑡  𝑖𝑛  𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒  .   𝑖𝑡  𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠  𝑡𝑜  𝑚𝑒  𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒  𝑦𝑜𝑢  𝑎𝑟𝑒  𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦  𝑖𝑛  𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑛  .      ❞      she  says  ,   the  weight  of  her  disappointment  is  palpable  .   but  he’s  always  had  a  tendency  to  be  incorrect  .      ❝      leave  the  poor  girl  to  herself  and  wait  a  year  or  two  .   a  boy  your  age  is  still  a  boy  ,   enjoy  it  while  you  have  the  time  .      ❞

but  mabel  can  see  that  he  will  not  listen  .   he’s  still  as  close  to  doing  something  evil  with  that  ugly  ,   festering  imposter  as  when  he  walked  into  her  parlour  .   she  feels  a  lurching  in  her  chest  .
