They're Kinda Funky

Flying islands largely don't operate by normal rules. Each appears as though they were ripped out of the ground (though if that is the case there’s no evidence of exactly where from), each is surrounded by its own sea filled with abundant marine life, and each exhibits its own center of gravity that prevents people and animals alike from accidental plummeting. The islands’ seas cascade into the Ever Falls around them, feeding into the blanket of ever present clouds that often brew storms, and if it wasn’t for many giants tethering their homelands to the ground they would likely still be drifting around the globe. The climates of the islands are far colder as well (as altitude tends to do), and each houses a diversity of cultures and ethnicities between them (not all of which are close to their human counterparts, but that’s assumed to be from drifting)

Reverse Rainshadow

(This is actually really important)

The strong winds the islands fly in can prove fatal even for their larger inhabitants, and the currents drive much of the moisture in the air off into the open sky. The result creates a reverse rain shadow, where wind dries and the shadows of mountains (of which there are thankfully many, as those same currents carved them from the rock through millennia) are the only places to grow anything more than low lying lichens [1]

An interesting side note about the islands (which I don't have a good segway for or a good means of making a visual to show) is that due to their altitude not many clouds are high enough to rain over the islands, so the precipitation they get isn't rainfall. Instead they get a mist that evaporates from their surrounding seas during the day and condenses into heavy fog during the night, drenching whatever land it isn't blown off of

In those fertile places (which are very fertile due to rich soils) the plants that do grow tend to be warped by the wind, leaning in the direction of the currents even when no wind blows, with gnarled roots bared to the air [2]. The only exceptions tend to be low lying shrubs--and the grand redwood forests the islands are famous for
