Those of wit and learning will always find their kind. (ravenclaw aesthetics)
Fabian, Benjy, Peter
I donât really know any of these blokes well, but why not. Not like I have actual work or things to do⌠Uh, kill Fabian so that I always know which twin Iâm talking to. Fuck Peter? I guess? Because if I married him I think Iâd essentially be married to his entire pack and that sounds exhausting. And I guess that has me marrying Benjy. How do you feel about cats, Benjy?Â
Benjy smirked at the witch. Â âOh, now, Iâm surprised you havenât heard stories already, darlinâ. Â Risk and I go hand in handâwhen the risks make sense.â Â He was no fool, but he also never let fear control him. Â
His dimple worked its way in and out of his cheek as the woman joked with him.  This side of Amelia was funâ âHeyânot a bad idea.  I might have to steal thatâŚnew exit criteria for becoming an full fledged aurorâ your coffee must pass muster.â  A little twinkle sparkled in his baby blues and he teasingly said: âIâll even defer the pleasure to you to send your compatriots packing if they canât brew something decent.â He winked punctuating his joke, reinforcing the insincerity of his dry humor. Â
âLetâs go, then, Liaâdo you mind if I call you that, Miss Bones?â His question was offered with feigned propriety and exaggerated seriousness, as he offered his arm to escort her out of the Ministry and to the nearby coffee shop.
He craved argument and intellectual discussionâbut he did not focus on the pleasure he derived from the activityâbut the value it had to aurors.  âItâs important for this career. Playing devilâs advocate can bring a breakthrough when youâre stuck on a caseâ Have to be able to get out of your head and into other peoplesâŚthe vics and the perps.âÂ
Benjy could not keep himself from grinning and even laugh at Ameliaâs fiery little response to his comment of auditioning. She would fit right in with the other badass women pain in his asses in the DMLE. She had that same fight that he admired in Doeâeven if he didnât tell either so. Â âGood for you. Â Thatâs the kind of attitude you need to have, canât go half way with this shit. Â Half decent aurors end up dead. Â So, you better live up to your word, doll.â
The name question was one he got from time to time.  He pursed his lips for a momentâŚnot sure how honest he was willing to be with his fake fiancee.  âWell, it was what my mother called me.  My father liked to call me Benjaminâand wasnât too kind when his attention was on meâŚSoânever really encouraged me to take on that variation.  Ben just seemed so plainâ you see a Ben here, there, and everywhereâ How many Benjyâs have you known?â
âYouâve got yourself a deal,â Amelia agreed easily. âGot to weed out the non-coffee drinkers early, I think. Can you believe that tall bloke, the one with the tattoo of a dragon on his arm, Garreth, I think? offered me chamomile tea last week? As if tea wasnât bad enough itself, he had to suggest chamomile and then added that it would âhelp me relax.ââ She shuddered dramatically. âNext sparring session, Iâd like to be paired with him...weâll see who needs to relax then.âÂ
She smiled and lifted one shoulder in a shrug at the nickname. Honestly, she wasnât picky about things like that. Over the years sheâd had several variations of her name ranging from Ames, Amy, Melia, Mel, and the dreaded Melly Belly that was reserved for her fatherâs use only. And, of course, the simple Bones. Lia was a new one, but she sort of liked it. âI donât mind at all,â she replied, taking his arm. âCall me whatever you wish. After all, itâs only natural for a husband to have pet names for his wife.âÂ
Nodding in agreement, she added, âAnd it helps to identify the weaknesses in your case. If everyone is in agreement all the time something is bound to slip through the cracks. A healthy discussion brings up flaws and holes that you otherwise might not see.â Truth be told, sheâd never understood why people got so touchy when things like that were pointed out. No matter how long a person had been working on something, they should want it to reflect their best work and therefore should welcome the chance to fix any issues.Â
Her chin rose a notch as he laughed at her, but she relaxed when she realized the intent behind it, flashing him a cocky smile. âI have never settled for being âhalf decentâ at anything my entire life and I donât intend to start now,â Amelia assured him. âYou can count on that.âÂ
His motherâs name for him, that made sense. Especially since she had passed away when he was young. The mention of his father had her clenching her jaw; few things made her as furious as parents who would mistreat their own children, but this hardly seemed like the time to get into it. âWell, thereâs that muggle movie that came out a few years ago about a dog named Benji...but other than that, youâre the only Benjy I know. I did know a Benny once, though.â
Bait and Switch | July 7
Moody took the flower and examined it, nodding approvingly at Ameliaâs explanation. âGood work,â he said, handing it back to her. Â No sense taking it away now, she was already invested in the case. âThink it will work for magical persons, and not just magical creatures?â he asked. Â It was all well and good for the flower to start spinning when a creature entered the garden, but with the Aurors so far away, it gave no indication of whether whatever magical creature it was, was entering the garden voluntarily or not.
âIn any case, do one up for me as well, and we can be off,â Moody said. He needed a way to monitor the garden too, and he wasnât going to leave it entirely in the hands of Ms. Bones, capable as she was proving to be. Besides, she might as well show off her Charms skills for him again.
Amelia frowned thoughtfully as she took the flower back from him. âIt should respond to magic, person or creature. I was thinking more of the creatures, given that that was the issue, but yes. I think it will respond to a person as well. Give it a go, and weâll find out,â she said, gesturing to the border of the garden. âMight as well make sure it works before I make you one.âÂ
Placing the flower in the flat of her hand, she waited for Alastor to cross the border of the garden and resisted the urge to cross her fingers, hoping the charm would work. It took a second, but soon enough the small flower began to spin slowly in her hand. Amelia broke into a wide grin and looked up at him. âGuess it works.â Plucking another fallen flower from the ground she performed the charm again, careful to keep her wand hidden from the house in case they had an audience. When it was complete, she held it out to him. âIf I had more time, I could modify it to react differently to different kinds of magic and magical creatures, but there are so many...it would take ages.â
âYou know Iâm right! Iâm always right!â
Emmeline laughed and hugged Amelia. âYes, yes I know you are. But you didnât come here to tell me just how right you were did you?â
Emmeline laughed a bit more before shaking her head. âOh Mels, you know your life would be completely drab and boring without my constantly bothering you.â She smiled before shrugging. âI figured Iâd let you decide. You know I tend to lead us towards booze and uncomfortable situations.â
âAhh, drab and boring... I miss drab and boring. Godric, those were the days,â Amelia replied, wistfully staring off into the distance. âBut, yes, lets avoid the booze and uncomfortable situations tonight, please, Iâve got early training tomorrow -- wandless defense in the padded room and the last thing I need is to be off my game. How do you feel about pizza at my place?âÂ
