They say that among the many mysteries of Hogwarts School—such as the Chamber of Secrets that belonged to one of the founding fathers, Salazar Slytherin, and the tales of immortality gained from drinking the blood of unicorns—there exists one story unlike any other.
One with almost no proof of its existence.
Long-gone alumni claim that deep within the Forbidden Forest of Hogwarts there dwells a being like no other, a haunting specter far more fearsome than any Dementor that would steal your soul.
This beast lives deep within the forest and is rarely seen in daylight. That is why it is wise never to set foot in the forest after the hours of dusk. For deep in the night, among the spiders and centaurs, you never know when it might catch the scent of your presence.
If you hear it coming, always run.
You would hear its galloping hooves long before you ever see its form. And when you do see it, it is as though Death itself has come to greet you.
You do not see a beast, nor a Dementor—oh, how you would wish it were a Dementor.
Instead of some ghost. You would see a towering suit of dull, obsidian-black armor standing where a man should be, its neck ending in a gaping void from which tendrils of shadow coil like smoke. Twisted horns crown the empty collar, while jagged pauldrons and cruel, blade-like gauntlets give the figure the appearance of a gatekeeper from Hell rather than a knight.
Every plate is scarred and ancient, layered like the scales of some primordial beast, and the darkness clinging to the armor seems to scream of despair and horror.
The being would have no head, yet it would have a body.
It is the sight of a Dullahan—the harbinger of death, a headless rider whose body has long since lost its humanity.
And its steed, too, is a monster.
They say the horse is a corpse given motion: gaunt, with skin stretched over sharp bones and a skull-like face frozen in a permanent grin of exposed teeth. Its eyes burn with pale green fire, and from its neck and tail pour streams of spectral flame that dance without any source of heat.
Should you ever see this being, it may be wise to simply give up.
Others say never to run and never to show fear.
No one truly knows if the Dullahan exists. If it does, then its existence has been covered up deeply.
This is, after all, only myth and speculation.
Although many students claim to have seen the creature, to this day there remains no true proof.
Thus, the key advice to anyone who reads this is simple:
This is but a tale told in taverns and around fireplaces and should not be taken seriously. Do not chase your curiosity and wander into the Forbidden Forest late at night.
That would be breaking curfew and school rules.
With a thud and a deep sigh, Tom closed the book.
Hogwarts History: Myths and Tales was written neatly across the cover in elegant cursive.
Oh, he was absolutely going to check it out.
