On the History of Tarot

Tarot experts, because they are schooled in a particular ideology, tend to be heavily biased when writing about history. Thankfully, the author of the book that comes with The Golden Tarot: The Visconti-Sforza Deck (2013), is not a tarot expert. Mary Packard is a children’s book writer employed by a publisher to write this book. She had to research the topic thoroughly, and thus presents the objective truth, untainted by ideology.

On Traditional Tarot Meanings

Many new readers think that the Rider-Waite tarot is as classic as it gets. When in fact, its meanings for the cards would be unrecognizable to tarot readers of the past. In The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910), you can listen to A. E. Waite himself, the creator of this enduring deck, talk about traditional meanings as if they are merely myths and rumors from a distant past. It will give you perspective on just how rich tarot’s heritage truly is.

On Tarot Symbology

The symbols on tarot cards are not something to memorize just for the fun of it, or just to be able to show off to other readers. We need to learn them because they matter extensively when we are interpreting a card’s meaning. Colors and elements translate to feelings and prophecies. Marcus Katz and Tali Goodwin’s Secrets of the Waite-Smith Tarot (2015) is an authority on symbology.

On Spellcasting

Ask yourself why you want to be a witch.

First and foremost, that is what you have to do.

Is it only because of the aesthetics? Go be a Harry Potter fan instead.

Is it only because you like Greek mythology? Just watch Clash of the Titans on Netflix.

Is it only because you want to try tarot for fun? Fine. You do not have to be a witch for that.

Witchcraft is not a passing trend like avocado toast, TikTok or smokey eye makeup.

It is a sacred way of life.

Countless of its practitioners were killed simply for existing. Countless others had to hide their beliefs just to keep on breathing.

You do not get to turn our ancient faith into a hashtag on Instagram, while being ignorant of how real it is for so many of us.

Get your hands on these books. They are introductions to tarot, mythology and spellcasting.

For something even more basic, grab these. One is a handbook on divination, and the other is an elementary-level magic introduction.

You do not have to buy your own copies. Find them online or borrow them from a library. You do not have to read them cover to cover either. Browse the pages until you are ready to dive in further.

Absolute beginners, with no elders to guide them, are better off learning the basics from such sources. Because compared to most internet writers, published authors tend to be less biased. You are then assured of a factual overview of what the craft is all about.

Then find out who your true deity is. Start learning about entities. And try out as many spells and methods of divination as you wish.

Sigils were the first magic I ever learned. As an artist, symbolism and aesthetic are things that are incredibly important to me. I have used multiple ways of crafting sigils, but I have created my own personal way of creating sigils using a method writers have used in poetry- the stream of consciousness technique.

I put my pen to paper, call upon what I wish to make a sigil about, and let the pen create what I need.

These are the sigils that I use the most frequently (you may use them if you wish).

You may notice that my sigils in the form of arrows. Arrows are a symbolic representation of aiming and shooting for something, and I love the vertically long look because I like to draw these sigils on my forearms.

I created all of these with stream of consciousness drawing.

It is almost like a form of meditation for me. Allowing myself to simply create what I think “focus” or “protection” looks like visually makes the end results beautiful and meaningful for me.

I do have a few running themes. Here are a few symbols I love to throw in.

These are used a ton in my art.

So here is a step by step of what to do-

1. Clear your mind for meditation. (Tip- if you have crystals that symbolize your intent, surround yourself with them. And example would be having a rose quartz for love on you or near you.)

2. Put your writing utensil to your paper. (I recommend using paper before digital.) Have your energy flow from your body to the focus of the tip of the pen/pencil, repeating the intent you wish the sigil to have.

3. Make a first draft of your sigil by allowing your hand to simply move as you think of your intent.

4. Make as many reiterations you wish until you have something you feel satisfied with. (Editing is a big part of writing as well.)

5. After a few tries making different sigils, make a list of your own common symbols you see popping up in your sigils.

And there you have it. If you are not comfortable, try mixing this technique with others to find what works best for you, or simply only use other techniques and make sigil arrows. I think using the look of an abstract arrow helps with directing intentions.
