Davy + Prentiss thoughts!!!
What I find most tragic about Davy is that he is his father’s first failed attempt at manipulation. His first attempt when he hadn’t yet perfected it, so instead of producing an obedient unfeeling soldier, he made someone who is emotionally volatile and deeply insecure. And in a sense, useless. A throw away attempt. An experiment.
Then you get Todd. Prentiss manipulates him, but at this point he is much more practiced in it, so he DOES produce the person that he wants. Todd is PERFECT. And Prentiss is ENAMOURED. And where does that leave Davy?
Because Prentiss is done with Davy. He has no interest in him any more. He has written him off! There must have been a point when Prentiss realised that he had ‘done too much’ and ‘went too far’ and consequently ruined him. Ruined Davy beyond fixing. Ruined his psychology.
And that must have been disappointing to him. Obviously, he wanted the manipulation to work on his own son. But I guess his hubris at the time might have led him to overlook the damage he was doing. He was arrogant, maybe. Too eager. Thought he could do it perfect first time. But evidently not.
And what he is left with is this boy who is so totally messed up. Desperate for his approval, which Prentiss finds repulsive. And OPENLY vulgar, which Prentiss finds distasteful. And all because of the years and years of fake smiles and gas lighting and targeted disapproval that he practiced on him.
