The humor lingers, but it softens when she starts talking about the case. Most people congratulated him after a win. Olivia rarely did unless she meant it. Combined with the late-night visit and the cleared desk, the pieces are finally starting to come together. Whatever brought her here tonight, it isn't work.

"Careful, Lieutenant," he says quietly, one corner of his mouth pulling upward. "Someone might hear that and start thinking you respect my professional judgment." His gaze lingers on her for a moment before he finally pushes away from the desk and rises from his chair. The paperwork is forgotten entirely now. "You know, when most people want to celebrate a conviction, they buy me a drink." He slips his hands into his pockets as he steps closer, not crowding her but closing some of the distance between them. "You, apparently, break into my office after hours and start behaving suspiciously."

"That," he says at last, voice lower than before, "is a very dangerous thing to do to a man who spent the last ten hours arguing motions and reviewing witness statements."

The corner of his mouth lifts despite himself. He takes a step closer, then another, stopping within arm's reach of the desk. His gaze lingers on her for a moment before his hand lifts almost absentmindedly. The tips of his fingers skim lightly along the exposed stretch of her leg, the touch brief and deliberate all at once, as though he's confirming that this is actually happening and not some elaborate setup designed solely to torment him.

The light clicks on before he lifts it toward Billy's eyes. “Look at me for a second.” His tone stays easygoing, but the shift into doctor mode is obvious. He checks pupil response, watches for hesitation, tracks the subtle signs that tell him whether the concussion is behaving itself or hiding something more serious. “Head injury, brief loss of consciousness, object falls out of the sky and introduces itself to your skull.” The penlight disappears again. “You don't get to call that a little conk. That's legally at least a medium conk.”

Setting the light away, he glances down at the chart before looking back up. “As for whether you're getting out of here tonight, that depends entirely on how attached I am to my medical license.” There's a faint pause as he folds his arms. “If your imaging looks good and you keep acting like a guy with a concussion instead of a guy trying to prove he doesn't have one, then your odds improve significantly.”

he's sleep deprived, sore and in need of a shower and some food before he passes out after a long and tedious shift that felt like it would never end. he had entered his home and dropped his bag, pulling his scrub top off which exposed his dark, tight- fitting shirt underneath that did little to mask his muscles that were otherwise concealed during his work days.

he went to the kitchen and grabbed a beer and a box of leftover takeout food that he intended to heat up for dinner. he had grabbed his bottle opener from a drawer and turned while opening it, setting the device down before bringing the bottle to his lips. he had just tasted the alcohol on his tongue when he jumped, the bottle nearly falling to the floor as he noticed yelena sitting in the darkness of his living room.

"jesus fucking christ! yelena, what the hell-" he set the bottle on the table and sat in the closest chair, needing a minute to calm his heart that felt like it was going to burst out of his chest. "how the hell did you find where i live? and how did you get in here?"

When the front door finally opens, Yelena doesn't move. She listens instead. The bag dropping by the door. Cabinets opening. A bottle cap popping free. Normal sounds. Almost enough to make her feel bad about what she's about to do. Almost. The reaction is immediate when Noah notices her. The beer nearly hits the floor. The curse echoes through the apartment. Yelena watches him with what would almost be amusement if she wasn't so tired. “Hello, Doctor Noah.” Her voice is rough. One arm remains wrapped around her middle beneath the blanket while the other lifts in a small wave.
