COUNTDOWN TO LOVER (cont’d)
This song means everything to me. In fact, if/when I ever get married, it’ll probably be the song I dance to with my dad. I know Taylor wrote it about her mom, but for me, this song has always been special for me and my dad. When I was a teenager, and CDs were still a thing, I would burn CDs for my dad to listen to in the car. When I put this song on a CD, he cried. And now this song is so special for the two of us. Even at Christmas this past year, we were hanging out in the kitchen, just me, my dad, and my step mom, this song came on, and my dad started tearing up again. It was the first Christmas we spent where my oldest sister wasn’t there, because she moved across the country. It was the first Christmas my middle sister spent with her husband. It was the first Christmas we spent out of the house that we grew up in. It was such an emotional holiday, and this song really reminded us both how happy we were to be able to spend the holiday together.
I struggle to listen to this song without tearing up at the bridge. Everytime it comes on, I immediately think of my dad. He was just diagnosed with leukemia this year, and it has been a bombshell for my family. Everyone has been feeling more emotional and sentimental,and I find myself tearing up at little things, like a line I’ve heard hundreds of times before: I have an excellent father. His strength is making me stronger. It is amazing how much that simple line has transformed for me.
I hope that Taylor eventually writes another song like this. It is so meaningful and emotional. I know Taylor nearly never sings this song live because of just that reason, but if she ever did write another like it, I know it would quickly become a new favorite of mine.
But for a healthier option, LOVER COMES OUT AT MIDNIGHT!
