Life isn't fair. When I was a boy, I did something good, and I was struck blind as a reward. But there are compensations. My other senses were magnified to superhuman levels. I could "see" all around me with a virtual radar. I grew up using those gifts to become lawyer by day and crimebuster by night, all to help balance the scales in an unjust world.

"We can get them earmuffs," He shrugged, as if the answer was obvious. "And you know, I could make a case that taking care of our children does make us very serious lawyers." Jokes aside, he doubted carrying the twins into a courtroom was a good idea. Even if it was allowed, he couldn't take his attention from them to actually do his job. Even now, with them just being a pair of heartbeats, Matt kept finding himself honing in on them instantly whenever Karen was around. He doubted it would be any different once they were here. "I mean, come on, we can at least bring them to the office, right?"

After 15 years in prison, Matt barely even remembered what life outside could be like, but he was finally starting to get settled. Foggy helped a bit, then he was able to land a job as a professor at ESU, thanks to some old connections. It was a good compromise now that he couldn't practice law anymore, and truth be told, he was enjoying it. Teaching was somewhat familiar territory thanks to his courtroom experience so slipping into the role of a professor wasn't too difficult. It helped that most of his students were too young to remember Daredevil or what he had done. So far, it had never come up.

He's mid-lecture when he catches a whiff of perfume, again. It had been happening for weeks now. Someone walks by, and somehow they smell like the love of his life, the one he hadn't seen in fifteen years since the trial, the one he'd long since accepted was gone forever. He spent most of his years locked up, mourning her, thinking that she was gone and that he never got a chance to say goodbye. It was only fitting that her memory would haunt him once he was out.

And yet, here she is, standing on the back of his class, as if not a day had gone by since they last saw each other. Where had she been all those years? Why didn't she reach out? How come she couldn't even take five minutes to write him a letter to let him at least know she was okay?

By the time he'd processed the shock, a full minute had gone by, with him standing in the middle of his classroom in silence while he tried to make sure it really is Karen, and he isn't just losing his mind— at this point, it isn't that unlikely.
