rippled sunlight through stained glass windows, points of a rosary cutting into palms, the settling anticipation of dimming theater lights, chipping paint off of white houses, indents in inner elbows from rolled up sleeves, dust evaporating from a guitar with every strum, the lonely creak of a playground swing in the breeze, mason jars with wilting flowers, dried tears on the backs of hands outstretched to the sky, creaking porch swings in a thunderstorm.

How did your muse spend their first night in Arcadia, and where?
Unsurprisingly, the church. Emmett had been aimlessly wandering when he first stumbled into the purgatory of Arcadia, and hearing church bells immediately drew him in. It was a familiar comfort to him - all churches seemed to have the same smell, didn't they? - and the same bibles lined the pews and all he could remember was kneeling before the altar of the Son of God and silently begging for forgiveness, tears flowing down his face as he tried so hard to stay focused on his prayers.
But the evening went on, and he didn't have the strength to get up. He had taken a spot at the edge of a pew, knees pulled to his chin, staring through the windows at the gray world he surrounded himself in. Those bells started to chime and Emmett ignored those too - it's not as if he thought he was overstaying his welcome. This was God's house. Still, he was met with surprised faces at seeing him, questions about who he was, in accents that he only ever heard in movies. The rest of the night, he prayed to God for those creatures to cease their taunting, to leave him be, to let him go home and fix these things that weren't even his fault.
He received no answer, and he was officially stranded.
Why did your muse choose to live where they do?
Emmett loves the movies. They were his first real escape and glimpse into a normal life when he was a teenager, when the leash of childhood was allowed to slacken a bit. He would go to the movies almost every day back then, and they always brought him some comfort. Now, he sleeps on a thin mattress beside an old school projector every night.
What was your muse doing when they came across the tree?
Emmett was out for a walk, thinking. His entire belief system and relationship with religion had come crashing down hours before this, and he was spiraling. The comfort of a higher power and the tenets for living a good and moral life was falling away like sand through fingers, and the panic and upset of it all had him wandering.
Not until much later did he realize that the tree really held any significance at all. He had been wandering through his homeland for years, playing in fields and forests and parks as a child with other kids of their congregation for years, and a long walk in a forest would have done him some good. Emmett hadn't been paying much attention to that, though; he really had only been looking at his feet the entire time until he came across asphalt he didn't recognize.
Has your muse left anything behind that they are desperately trying to return to or escape?
Emmett is at a crossroads. He wishes to return someday, of course. Despite all the differences, the time away, he desperately wanted to see his mother again. He wanted to apologize, to repent, to figure out a way to erase his sinful lineage and try to begin life anew. On the other hand, he couldn't face her, knowing how she lied to him, how she kept the illusion for years about the testaments of their faith, lying about who his father was for all these years. Deep in the recesses of his mind, he knew that the circumstances of his birth were of no fault of his own, but he had felt so unclean, an abomination, and his mother... didn't exactly refute that.
Maybe one day, he'd be able to investigate it further, to have a different kind of life and outlook on things than what was currently plaguing his mind.
