The importance of paper letters to strangers
Hannah spoke on Ted Talk about her experiences around written paper letters when she was 22. Therefore, because of her mother's imposition to communicate with her via phone or e-mail, like the rest of her colleagues. Although the means of communication have evolved as technology has evolved.
When Hanna joined the university, she was receiving paper letters from her parents via the mailbox not periodically. Which made her feel frustrated because of her inability to communicate with her family continuously over the phone. Even after Hannah moved to New York after her college career, she was feeling frustrated by the same thing. This led her to write paper letters similar to the letters that she received from her mother, but that Hanna wrote to strangers. Hana distributed these messages in cafes, government buildings, mailboxes and libraries, until she received reactions in her inbox from people who needed messages like these.
This act made Hanna give herself a promise on the Internet which is "if you asked me for a hand-written letter, I would write you one, no questions asked." Hannah’s paper trips to mailboxes of strangers became a major source and reason for inspiring a global organization, which developed the idea by introducing it to social media. Hana's mailbox has become an outlet for strangers who are most in need of such letters. Hana was receiving letters from strangers writing To other strangers it is not for meeting in reality, but because they found someone able to understand them.
Most of the paper letters Hannah received turned into love letters. These letters originated from strangers who did not expect that they would fall in love with each other because of ink on a piece of paper, but it happened. They are not from an old generation, but rather from a generation that is saturated with technology.
Hana carried her mailbox with her wherever she went, which contained various letters and stories from strangers. For example, the woman who hid the love letters of her husband, returning from Afghanistan, around the house because she was looking for a dialogue with him. In addition to that college girl who hid paper letters on campus, only to wake up the next day and find that her work has spread among students who spread love letters on trees and wooden benches.
The stories Hannah was receiving made her believe that paper letters are a form of art with all that it contains. Such as the writing method, the style of correspondence, the art of signing, the drawings in the margins, and the idea of installing all the person's interest in writing a message to the desired person. On the other hand, it is difficult for a person to give all his attention to another person in e-mails, and this is due to the phone being crowded with messages, notifications, and calls. Where a person is not able to reveal his feelings as he wants, because he wants to respond to everyone quickly. This confirms that paper messages carry all forms of art, unlike electronic messages.
