The forest didnât sound the same on this side of the Merge.
Lyric felt it the moment she crossed the treelineâtoo many heartbeats, too much human noise pressed against old roots that remembered quieter laws. The air carried iron and engine oil alongside moss and leaf rot, and the moonlight fractured oddly against half-collapsed stonework ahead.
She paused at the edge of the clearing, one hand resting loosely near Threnodyâs hilt. Not drawn. Just⌠ready.
Broad-shouldered, steady in the way of someone whoâd learned to plant himself between danger and others without ceremony. Werewolfâshe knew that much instantly. Pack-alpha weight sat on him like a second spine, old and earned, not borrowed. He wasnât prowling. He wasnât hunting.
Lyric stepped forward deliberately, boots crunching once against gravel so her presence wouldnât be mistaken for an ambush. The autumn wind shifted with her, carrying cedar and smoke and something older still.
âI wonât cross your line,â she said calmly, voice low and even, pitched for someone who understood boundaries more than threats. Her hands stayed visible, relaxed at her sides. âBut this land called to me. Loudly.â
Her gaze met hisâunflinching, bronze-green and scar-marked with a life spent in wars he didnât recognize.
âLyric Thorne,â she added after a beat. Not a title. Not a challenge. Just a name, offered straight. âAutumn Court. Iâm not here for your pack⌠unless somethingâs already hunting it.â
A pause, measured. The faintest tilt of her head, assessing without disrespect.
âAnd you,â she continued, eyes sharp but curious, âstand like someone who doesnât move unless it matters. That usually means responsibility.â
She stopped a respectful distance away, the forest holding its breath around them.
âSo tell me,â Lyric said quietly, âam I standing on guarded ground⌠or shared ground?â
