Thomas was on a walk. Thatâs what he told himself, anyway. Heâd actually been sent out by his brother, who seemed to have developed a fondness for the phrase: âstop slumping around in the house. go make a new friend, get run over or something, just get the hell out of the house for a minuteâ. Thomas normally just ignored him and went back to doing whatever it was he was up to at the time; chewing his jacket strings, listening to the same song for four hours, talking to himself.Â
But today, the weather was alright, and Thomas wanted to feel the cool air on his skin. He had picked up a big stick from the grass in front of his house, and he was dragging it around behind him, imagining that it left lines against the sidewalk. It didnât, but Thomas didnât know that. There wasnât a lot of vegetation on this street; he couldnât see to begin with, but now he especially couldnât see.
A rock came up under his foot. He stumbled.
He fell.
All hell broke loose. Thomas couldnât afford to trip in unfamiliar areas, his bearings were completely thrown off, his sense of direction became obsolete. He felt around at the ground beside him. He grabbed his stick and pulled himself up to his feet.
âHello?â he called, making the mistake of turning around, âHello?!â
Toby pulled into the driveway, eyeing the number of cars ahead of him. Something didn't quite add up in his head, but he didn't worry about it.
Thomas heard the many clicks of a car turning off and stepped outside, carrying his wine bottle and following Toby's footsteps to the door.
Thomas knocked on the door, fidgeting nervously as he waited for her.
Des rushed toward the door, just before she opened it she bent over and shook her hair out, before flipping it back.
She pulled the door open with a wide smile âhi!â She looked Thomas up and down âyou look goodâ she whispered in his mind
âCome in come inâ she proped the door open, ushering them inside. Ignoring the steady beat of theos heart in the closet not to far from her.
Thomas smiled. Thank you.
He stayed close to her as they walked further into the house.
"We brought the wine," he said, holding it up, "the store clerk said it was good."
âJerry usually knows what heâs talking aboutâ she took the bottle, sliding her arm around his.
âToby, come in, if you donât do wine, thereâs whiskey as wellâ she smiled, gaze soft and open. Friendly even. âYou know I donât think your brother likes meâ
Thomas shook his head. He just doesn't know you yet. He can see, so he tries to stand guard around strangers. He hasn't come to terms with my blindness yet, so he thinks he needs to protect me.
Toby quietly followed behind them, politely keeping his hands in his pockets and looking around at the place.
She tried not to pout. She really did. Instead she turned with a gorgeous smile and tilted her head âfeel free to look around. The two spares are waiting to be furnished, but my room is just thereâ she pointed.
Releasing Thomas she glides around the kitchen, boots clicking against the wood. Iâll never let anything happen to you. She snipped in her mind, Thomas meant something to her now. Like sheâd ever willingly let something bad happen to him was laughable
He smiled to himself. Thank you. That means a lot to me.
Toby's eyes were still wandering, looking at the furniture and the walls.
"This is a real nice place," he commented.
âThank you, I havenât dedicated as much time to decorating it as I wanted to, the only real finished room is my bedroomâ she called from the open kitchen. Grabbing glasses
âTell me more about you, do you work?â She asked setting the glasses on the coffee table and pouring some in each, handing Thomas ones and reaching toward Toby to hand him one as well. Then she sat down next to Thomas, her wolf sated and relaxed in her mind now that he was here and she was at home.
Toby nodded. "I work at the library," he said, sniffing his glass, "we get a lot of business these days, for some reason."
âLibrary, thatâs fun, do you read often yourself?â She ignored the fact that Toby didnât trust her enough not to poison him, since he did buy the bottle.
âItâs downtime, the kids are out of school, and the parents are trying to keep them busy enough until Christmas, itâs normalâ Desi shrugged and tilted her glass toward her mouth again. Thinking about when she was a child and had to find something to do since she was alone during these times.
Toby nodded. "I tend to go for art books. Tutorial type things and history stuff."
Thomas took a short pull from his glass and licked his teeth.
She nodded âbooks are cool, youâll have to show me some of your stuff, Iâve tried painting and that ended horribly, maybe I just didnât have a good teacherâ
She nudged Thomas and smiled, relishing in the feeling of him next to her. Of being able to smell him throughout the house. The oven dinged and she hoped up.
âDinners ready, and donât worry Toby, I didnât poison itâ she giggles and winks, heels clicking as she made her way to the kitchen

Desdemona is 5â7, green eyed, and has long brown hair that she refuses to cut no matter what anyone says.
Sheâs a fierce protector of her friends and family, should she have children itâll get even worse. She loves to dress down, soft colors, jeans and even softer sweaters, but when itâs time she dons leather jackets and combat boots. Her heart is big, but she wonât hesitate to punch you in the fucking face. Remember that.
She is a person that doesnât hide her intentions from anyone. She will tell you how she feels with little hesitation. If youâre being an asshole, or suspicious she wonât hide her skepticism.
