"Isn't it weird that [thing humans commonly eat] is poisonous to literally every domesticated animal" I mean, there's a pretty good chance that [thing humans commonly eat] is at least mildly poisonous to humans, too. One of our quirks as a species is that we think our food is bland if it doesn't have enough poison in it.
Humans have a really weird mix of mundane superpowers.
We're not fast and don't have a lot of natural weaponry but we're bizarrely tolerant to a broad range of toxins to the point that one toxin is considered a morning necessity for some to perform at work. Gotta love us.
âIf I Am Killed For Simply Livingâ â Althea Davis
TW medical trauma
In one of my pre-op hysterectomy exams Iâd told the nurse that I was in a lot of pain due to the period cramp-inducing meds they gave me and can I please please PLEASE have pain medication and the docâs response was to laugh and joke about it when Iâd walked in with a visible limp from the cramps (yes this is possible)
The doc greeted me by saying âSo, I heard that someone is a little mad at me todayâ in a playful tone, like I was a kid unhappy that my chicken nuggets werenât dinosaur shaped and not a grown ass man enduring the worst pain of my life for the sake of a procedure, and I couldnât help but think âIâm so fucking glad I wonât have to see any vagina doctor ever again after this surgeryâ
Because if thereâs a running theme for me with OB/GYNs it is them not taking my pain seriously, and this compounds when youâre a trans man as âwomen are emotional and overdramaticâ and âmen donât feel painâ combine in the worst possible way inside the doctorâs office because even if theyâre gender affirming they do, in fact, see you as both when theyâre rooting around inside your reproductive organs
20 minutes later I was crying on the table with both the doctor and nurse looking very guilty after lightly collecting a tissue sample turned into a cramp that seized the right side of my body starting from the inflamed lame hip, traveling down to my knee, and up my back to just below the shoulder blade. It outweighed the pain of completely pulling a muscle in my right hip/thigh in high school, and that injury had rendered me literally physically incapable of running even if I grinned through the pain and tried anyways.
They had to leave me alone for 30 minutes to collect myself and try my best to soothe the pain through stretching and breathing exercises
Tissue samples would later reveal I had an undetectable form of endometriosisâundetectable meaning theyâd never know unless they took my uterus outside of my bodyâwhere my uterus had grown into the muscles in my abs and lower back. So any time my uterus cramped, it tugged on nearly every muscle in my core, which in turned tugged on my entire body in painful 9/10 scale cramps and spasms. A level of pain that I had, in fact, reported to them like I do to every doctor who asks about menstrual history. It was easily worse than healing from the top surgery I had 6 months prior.
I later learned that the medication wasnât entirely necessary like the doctor said, it was just easier for her to do the exam with it since it dilated the cervix, thus causing severe cramps
I hope they learned their lesson and didnât make anyone else reporting severe period pain take that medicine, but fact is that people arenât lessons, and I shouldnât have been their lesson in the first place.
This comment was left on a post about making the most of the Libby app. "Excessive use of generous lending policies" is the most absurd phrase I've ever seen anyone use to discuss libraries.
evergreen
And I'm sorry, but library sales of our books lead to MORE PEOPLE BUYING THE DAMN BOOKS FROM WORD OF MOUTH.
Anyone acting like reading a book from a library is somehow cheating us authors out of sales is either an idiot or pushing some other kind of agenda.

Breaking my several year harry potter silence just to say that in the Apollo Justice Trilogy, they removed the harry potter reference they originally had in the game. Which means that if you still consume hp content and talk about it, you are doing worse than fucking capcom
@endigolikesarson In the original, for the running joke regarding Valant and doors, Apollo calls Valant a muggle
While in the remaster, he says this which is way funnier even without the baggage
Everyone reblogging this post saying stuff like "they probably changed it because of copyright/dated reference" NEEDS to know that 1. There are multiple references to Doctor Who and Star Trek and a character probably named after someone from Battlestar Galactica of all things and 2. The lead writer for the localization stuff with Ace Attorney uses they/them pronouns.
Today my magnificent octopus magnum opus, a 126-page monograph on the genus RhombophryneâMadagascar's diamond frogs, was published open access in the journal Vertebrate Zoology. In it, my colleagues and I have described seven new diamond frog species and provided detailed revised accounts of each of the now 27 species in the genus, compiling practically everything that is known about these curious and obscure frogs!
Allow me to introduce the new characters:
This piece of lint precious child is Rhombophryne maraorao, a little burrowing species from the northeast of Madagascar. It is very similar ecologically to R. coudreaui, a long-known species from further south. The name maraorao means ârough to the touchâ in Malagasy, referring to the rough skin of this species. They do a weird thing where they straighten all of their limbs and go stiff in self defence. Think pumpkin toadlet post-launch mid-air stiffness, but⌠in the hand?
This beautiful creature is Rhombophryne mavokely, a little leaflitter-dwelling species from the northeast of Madagascar. The name mavokely is the Malagasy word for âpinkâ but literally translates as âsmall yellowâ (mavo = yellow, kely = small). I LOVE this bizarre etymology, and also this species is small and sometimes pink and sometimes yellowish, so the name seemed extremely apt. This species was the first Rhombophryne I ever saw aliveâI caught the first ever specimen immediately underneath my hammock on Marojejy in 2016!
This shiny boy is Rhombophryne sonaliae, a rather well known species from eastern Madagascar that has previously been called R. alluaudiâuntil we showed in 2019 that the correct use of that name was for a Plethodontohyla alluaudi from southern Madagascar! We dedicated this species to Sonali Garg, in recognition of her fantastic work especially on Asian frogs.
This forbidden truffle is Rhombophryne anatiala, a very poorly known species very closely related to R. sonaliae but found further north and differing subtly. The name anatiala means âin the forestâ in Malagasy, referring to the forest habitat of these frogs.
This bumpy beanbag with his go-faster chevron is Rhombophryne kotrobaratra, an interesting species from northeastern Madagascar with rather unusual anatomy, especially its quite long and strong hindlimbs. The name kotrobaratra means âthunder and lightningâ in Malagasy, and refers to the inclement weather that seems to bring these frogs out (true for all Rhombophryne, really) .
This coffee bean is Rhombophryne quentini, an orange-thighed species from high-elevation forests in northern Madagascar that resembles R. ellae. Back in 2020 I named R. ellae after my partner, Ella, and I thus took particularly great pleasure in naming this new, closely related species after our four-and-a-half year-old son, Quentin. A little family of frogs. :3
This little pebble is Rhombophryne kilonjy, a small, poorly known and obscure species related to R. ellae and R. quentini but found in lowland forest close to the coast in northwestern Madagascar. The name kilonjy means âpebbleâ in Malagasy because, well, just look at it.
Even way back in my tumblr posts from 2013 and 2014 I think you would find mentions of the work I had begun on this monograph. I had no notion that it would take more than twelve years to complete. But I cannot express my joy at finally being able to share these charming, round frogs with the world. I hope you approve of the names!
If you want to read a bit more about these frogs, you can do so on my website. I have even posted a couple short videos about them on TikTok and Instagram (which also will show you how to pronounce the names!). Basically, you can find me most places on the internet, and wherever you find me, you can be sure to find frogs and lizards and snakes and a good deal of enthusiasm.
not a wolf, not a dog, but a secret third thing
Myth: "I only wear vegan fabrics. Better for the animals, better for the planet." Let's check in on Doris's annual contribution. Once a year, in late spring, Doris is sheared. The procedure takes approximately three minutes. Doris does not enjoy it. Doris does not, by any visible measure, suffer from it. Doris is, immediately afterwards, a noticeably more comfortable animal in the British summer. The fleece weighs approximately 3 kilograms. It is sold to the British Wool Marketing Board for, depending on the year, between ÂŁ0.40 and ÂŁ2.50 per kilogram. The shearing costs more than the wool fetches. Brian is shearing Doris at a loss. The wool is then: - Naturally flame-retardant - Naturally antibacterial - Moisture-wicking - Biodegradable - Renewable, annually - Carbon-storing while in use The replacement, in performance fabrics: - Polyester - Polyamide - Acrylic - Polypropylene - All petroleum-derived - All shedding microplastics on every wash - All requiring fossil fuel inputs to produce - All non-biodegradable, with a typical landfill lifespan of 200-500 years A single wash of a polyester fleece can release up to 700,000 microplastic fibres into the water system. These fibres are now in: every tested water source on earth, every tested human placenta, every tested rainfall sample, the deep ocean, the Arctic ice, and the lungs of marine mammals. A single wash of a wool jumper releases: nothing. The wool, when eventually disposed of, returns to soil within a few years. The fabric being marketed as the "ethical" alternative to wool is plastic. The plastic is "ethical" because nobody has been asked to slaughter the polymer. The polymer also has not been asked. Doris, by being a sheep on a fell, is producing the most thoroughly sustainable performance fabric humans have ever made. Brian is selling it at a loss. The fashion industry, meanwhile, is selling petroleum at a profit and calling it ethical. Reject plastic. Wear wool. Doris is, this morning, growing next year's batch.
Note: if you're allergic to wool, you might be allergic to the dyes and fine with undyed wool. Maybe not, but it's worth a try.
Annual deer post:
If you see a fawn laying down on the ground all alone, leave it alone. It is not lost, it does not need your help, do not pick it up, do not move it.
This behavior evolved to keep deer young safe. The baby is very small, very quiet, and hard for most predators to see. A young fawn cannot keep up with a fleeing mother deer, which is their primary problem-solving strategy. So while the mother goes elsewhere to graze, the fawn stays safe and hidden. The mom will be back.
Leave the fawn alone.
This is always good to pass around this time of year, but I would like to add something for the few of us who might be encountering the moose kind of deer.
Moose are deer, but moose have the opposite strategy. They stay close to their babies, and their primary response for anything getting close to their babies is immediate violent murder. If you do see a baby moose by itself, leave. Leave the baby alone and leave the area, preferably quickly. Momma is at most 30 yards away and has already kicked on the kill bill sirens.

cancel your mullvad subscription
tech news today is that Mullvad VPN has gone mask-off about being the major funding source for the Swedish Orebro party, who are racist nationalists. unfortunately all discussion of this is occurring on fucking Mastodon instances i can barely load
if you are a mullvad customer (as i am) and want to get out, here is guidance from this guy
If you don't want your Mullvad fees going to fund neo-Nazis - or @mozilla VPN fees, which is rebranded Mullvad - cancel and get a refund immediately that's whose "free speech" the official account is talking about here, and that's where your fees go to EDIT: Mullvad has a 14 day refund policy. But the message below is a direct call to ask for a refund if you don't want to give money to Nazis. If Mullvad refuse a refund, call your consumer protection agency. And reverse credit card charges on the basis of deceptive refund policy representations. It's not like you ever want to be a Mullvad customer again. archive copy of Mullvad statement: https://web.archive.org/web/2026062717
some people have reported being refused refunds that fall outside their 14-day refund window. my sub was 60 days past the payment date, but fwiw I emailed support with my account number and a screenshot of the above mastodon post and explicitly said "In line with your official account's statement, I'd like to request an immediate cancellation and refund on the grounds that I don't share the values of Mullvad or any other company that knowingly profits Nazis. If you're unwilling to issue this refund, please let me know and I'll be happy to escalate the matter to consumer protection." and they issued my refund without a fuss.
A Waymo vehicle delivered two 15-year-olds, who were drinking alcohol and shooting small water beads out of the car, straight to police.
I'm sure it's totally fine and normal and great that the taxi spies on you and will just deliver you directly to the police :)
This definitely can't be something that would be used in an abusive or arbitrary way :)
Law enforcement for sure wouldn't abuse something like this :)
Anyways, more pin designs for all who have a kind heart
Remember childrenâthis tactic is really annoying to the police, so YOU SHOULD NOT become floppyâitâs frustrating to them and makes them look bad and is a waste of resources and no one wants thatâŚ
I've been floppy for years. as always, I'm ahead of the curve
NASA took a pic of the dark side of the moon fyi
Yeah, isnât that a cool picture? Itâs the one someone showed me to point out what color the moon really is compared to the Earth! They both have the same amount of sunlight on them here.
The moonâs not white! Itâs concrete-gray! It only looks so shiny when compared to the void of space!
I love learning things I didnât expect to learn. Like when I learned that itâs called the âdark sideâ of the moon because itâs the side we donât see, not because sunlight never hits it.
she's mooning us

so frustrating to be a skeptic with a sense of whimsy because like. I want there to be cryptids. I want there to be magic. I want there to be evidence of something we don't fully understand and can't explain. but then 99% of the "proof" out there for that stuff is like. the most obvious scam you've ever seen in your life.
