Horses have evolved to be grazing animals, “trickle feeding" on grasses for most of the day while on the move. These grasses and shrubs are low in easily digestible sugars and starches, and high in fibre. The horse’s long, slow digestive tract developed to deal with its natural diet, populated with beneficial bacteria which actually breaks down the fibre for the horse, producing volatile fatty acids and other nutrients which the horse can absorb and use as energy. In addition to providing the horses with nutrients, grazing on pasture also allows the horse to keep up a constant rate of chewing, satisfying both dental and behavioural needs of the horse. Here, our horses are seen grazing freely on our over 30 hectares of pasture. #horses #pasture #grazing #ranching #farmlife #nature #landscape #nature #tourism #agritourism #visitalmatfarms #almatfarmslive https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-j1PAoEHO/?utm_medium=tumblr
