Dont mind me googling what exactly the doctor would have prescribed Braeden in splintered heart
Putting this under a read more because talking about drugs specifically Morphine
So been thinking more and more about what Braeden was given and if it was in fact morphine how that would effect him more in splintered heart.
So Braeden would have first been given it as a medication for his pain most likely the morning after Serafina dies. Which is notttttt the time to be playing with that shit. He just watched the love of his life die and then buried her and is currently lieing to everyone about. Thats prime context for a addiction to form.
We also have to consider who his doctor is which all we really have to go off of his Waysas comment about how Braeden should have gone with his aunt and uncle to new york because a doctor there may have been able to fix his leg implying he has been seeing a local mountain doctor which dont exactly have the best reputation for a reason
Reading up on it right now specifically in the medical context and it says especially within the first 24-72 hours of your treatment it can cause breathing problems which the chances of are increased if you take anything else with it which im sure it was not the only thing he was given with how extreme his injuries were. which again imagine Braeden has just been through a life threatening ordeal where he barely made it out alive and Serafina died. He would already not be breathing well but i can imagine he would have plenty of fresh ptsd from watching serafinas breathing disappear
I feel like we can even see some of the symptoms in the book. Which most of them get chalked up to his depression but maybe there could be more to it.
For one we know hes not been eating well which a lost of appetite can be a symptom especially since it can be hard for someone taking Morphine to swallow.
Hes also described as acting very different as we can see a lot more agitated which that and nervousness can also be symptoms
Biggest one i feel we see is the shakiness/unsteady as we definitely see that a good bit. Later he seems mostly fine after serafina comes back which is mostly chalked up to it being mostly mental but also could be the effects of it starting to wear off
Obviously his depression is causes by serafinas death but if he was in fact taking morphine it certainly would not help.
It breaks my heart to think about even a fictional character that young being given something so serious but even today preteens can be given morphine under certain situations and its what they had at the time. And rowena fucked him up badddddd.
It also makes me think about his family and how maybe thats why they never asked to many questions (besides the fact he definitely wouldnt have answered them) they might have thought all of it was due to the medicine and trauma of what happened to him. Maybe they even would have made him quit taking it cold turkey which could cause withdrawals which is bad enough.
Its a interesting but sad rabbit hole to think about. I might dig/think some more into it because it could have some really interesting implications for his character and the story. Theres just so much in those missing 6 months that just make it so interesting to think about what all serafina/we missed
haven’t read these books in years but felt like sketching them tonight

so happy to hear there’s a fandom 🙂↕️
here’s some sketches while i try and figure out their designs!
Overview of Serafina and the Black Cloak (Partly)
Hello everyone! It has been so long since my last post but I am back and ready to write again!
This blog will be about the book,"Serafina and The Black Cloak" Before the winter break, I have gone to the Saratoga Library with my dad and this book was one among them.
Anyways, about the book. The plot is set in the year 1899. The main character, Serafina, an 11 year old girl who works in Biltmore Estate with her dad. She doesn't know about her mom, nor does her father want to talk about it. Serafina's role in the Biltmore estate staff is that she is the Chief Rat Catcher or C.R.C for short. No one in the Biltmore family notices her at all.
One night, she hears footsteps. Definitely not the steps of a rat. She softly follows the man, very careful of making sure he doesn't notice him. Then, she hears the light and tender scream of a girl. She looks and the man is dragging her down the stairs. "D O N ' T W O R R Y M Y C H I L D" The man says in an ominous, raspy voice. Then suddenly, his cloak lifts up and enwraps the girl, making her vanish. Serafina now realizes that since the man killed the little girl, he was gonna come for her next.
Serafina runs but runs with tender footsteps, making sure that the man won't hear her. He starts checking all the hiding places like the floor compartments and while he looked, Serafina thought “If I hid in there, I’d be dead” then finally, the man came to the laundry room, where Serafina was hiding. He could sense that she was hiding there but stayed still anyway. Serafina held her breath andstayed super still.
This is the end of the part I've read so far. Once I read the rest, I'll be sure to write about that too!

I remember reading and rereading the Serafina series then and I think this is also when I read Willa of the Wood properly) anyways augh I love this little forest creechur so much :(( <3 only like 20 pages in and I remember her so vividly WILLA I LOVE YOU STAY SAFE (she’s gonna face the Horrors isn’t she)
list of reasons why you SHOULD read Serafina and the Black Cloak
Healthy parent relationship between Serafina and her Pa
Parent is not eliminated to set off 'you are alone'. adventure(but is there as support for mc)
Historical fiction
Horror
The author wrote the books for his kids
Mystery

Im still not over robert beatty literally naming waysa bold one lmao
And naming serafina after a type of angel
Meanwhile braeden just means salmon/thief lmao
Yeah... a great family....
This is my exchange gift for @secretly-a-catamount, featuring Serafina when she was getting dressed for the Baltimore Ball in Serafina and the Twisted Staff.
Willa of the Wood: live Za reactions
going to be documenting my reactions as I read Willa of the Woods so my friends (and future self) can see it! OBV THERE WILL BE SPOILERS
first few chapters, I love how fast Beatty gives you a description of the characters and how he's not afraid to make them little creechurs. Willa has spots and streaks on her face, her ears can twitch so they're pointed or animallike, and she specifically has quills on the back of her neck. Love it
she's TWELVE and SHE HAD A TWIN AND HER TWIN IS DEAD? THE POOR THING already seeing a theme of colonization with how her people have adopted the day-folk's greed
also trying my best to NOT compare her to Serafina and instead read this book alone, without any references to anything else by Beatty
also SHE IS TWELVE AND SHE JUST TOOK A SHOTGUN ROUND TO THE BACK. WHAT
SHES GREEN I LOVE THAT!!!! PLANT!
hc that she bleeds chlorophyll
do I smell father-daughter potential
hi chat I hit a reading slump and was also focused on another book I’m helping to edit BUT
Padaran is a bitchass motherfucker. He pissed on my fucking wi-
I do LOVE how his obsession with humans is out of clear desperation tho
ALSO IF WILLA’S MAMAW DIES IM KILLING SOMEONE
“better a fool than a traitor!” SPITTING FUCKING BARS YOU GO WILLA
ohhh MY GOD THE WAY THAT THE FAERAN ARE PART OF THE WILD AND NATURE SO HUNTING THEIR FELLOWS IS NOT ONLY UNNATURAL BUT ALSO TRAITOROUS. ROBERT BEATTY YOU’VE FUCKING DONE IT AGAIN
WAYSA?
I NEARLY SCREAMED OUT LOUD IN THIS FUCKING CAFE HOOOOOHHHHLY SHIT
S E R A F I N A ?
CROSSOVER EVENTS MAKE ME LOSE MY MIND I AM SO SO SO HAPPY OMGGJNSHFNAHDJAHDJABDNAHRBA SUQHJRAIEHNQIRAHNELAJRNA AHAHEHARAGWJAJQ
the SECOND I get home I am going STRAAAAAAAIGHT TO MY BOOKSHELF
hello chat I may or may not have not updated this for ages bc it was actually causing a reading slump. But I just finished this book and you're going to LISTEN to me YAP and you're gonna LIKE IT.
first and foremost, Willa's role in her people's history is... gorgeous. I'm having a hard time accepting it in a "wait no this isn't how it usually is" way. She was there to spark change. She moved without a sound and set off a new piece of history for her people. She was the last and first of an era. She was a cycle
but also this is such a personal story. It really does live up to its title - this is about Willa. She is not a vessel to tell her clan's story. She is a story of herself, her journey of finding a purpose and a home and finding something that she wanted to pour her whole self into. This is her story, and her family's. Not her clan's.
Then there's the grief. The grief that this book portrays and forces you to feel. Yes, the Padaran was destroyed - but at a cost. Yet there was no other way - and yet the rebuilding will be difficult and foreign and may lose ties with its past. Will the Faeran return to their ancient home? Will any of their past be remembered? Will they even survive?
That's where hope comes in. Hope that the Faeran will rediscover their roots, like a replanted tree. Hope that Gillen will carry on the legacy of her friend, the last woodwitch, in a good light. Hope that their language will return in full use. That the Faeran will rebuild.
We saw the dregs of this hope when the riot started, and now we must continue to hope that once the wounds scab over, the hope continues and smothers old hate.
But we are not there for it. And while that's scary (to me, at least), it's okay. This is Willa's story. She told it for herself.
Identity appears in this book to me as well. Willa may be Faeran in origin, but she is an individual. She is a spirit of the woods, part of it as much as any plant or animal.
This is just me gushing about worldbuilding, but even within the clan you see that everyone has different roles - but not exactly individuality. You have individual roles, sure, but if you're a jaetter then you must be a jaetter. Togetherness in an obsessive way, a cult-like way.
Willa learned that she can be individual as herself, not her role. She found togetherness in a loving and accepting way.
Speaking of love, the way it's treated in this book is so beautiful. Willa learning that it's not finite, that it's not a fragile thing, is so gorgeous. And again, there is establishment of that cult-like obsessiveness not being love. She learns what it truly is.
ough. Robert Beatty you've done it again.
TL;DR
book very good I have many thoughts
oh ALSO another worldbuilding gush moment: the difference between physical aspects of the clan. Ones who look like wet stones, those who resemble spindly twigs, or spotted and streaked faeran. It all ties into the fact that the smothering of their individuality was killing them - which, btw, the stealing children reveal? THAT WAS AMAZING!!!!
and also again again it being a personal story and not a telling of something larger is so nice and I love it. ough
okay I'm done. For now.
Serafina and Willa would be best friends if they actually interacted. Like, I know Willa saw Serafina in Willa of the Wood, and Serafina saw Willa, but imagine if they actually interacted?? Like, I can just see them becoming best friends.
Definitely! I can just see Serafina just wanting to take Willa under her wing immediately if they actually met
He did say that (authors note of splintered heart I think? I'd have to double check) and I assumed the same or at least hope but we'll have to see I guess if he ever does release a new Willa or Serafina book😭
OH MY GODS YES THAT WOULD BE AWESOME
Seriously tho!!!
I NEED ITTTT
Sammmeee (I might write a fic with them tonight because now I'm back onto my craving content with them mode lol)
If Robert Beatty sees it, maybe we’ll get something 😭
I wonder if he realizes there's a whole community for it on here and ao3 lol
Imagine??? That would be so cool
If I actually used any of the socials he's on I'd let him know but unfortunately I'm not😅
I’d let him know if not for my crippling anxiety 😭
If/when he has his next book signing I'll definitely have to let him know🫡
He seems pretty chill and nice from my limited interactions with him
Willa and Serafina would absolutely be best friends.
Serafina falling out of a tree and breaking her arm, Willa doodling all over the cast.
Sharing a school detention because Willa (who is 100% a Flower Child) spray-painted a protest symbol on the front of the school and Serafina skipped school to go birdwatching.
Serafina and Willa bonding over both being a part of blended families.
Willa and Serafina being a two-person bookclub.
And so forth and so on.

Willa TV Project – Robert Beatty Books
I was avoiding posting about this until I saw something a little more official but it's a whole page on his official website so I guess that's as official as it gets
But basically they are finally adapting his books to the screen the company that he is teamed up is surprisingly entertainment one not disney who owns the rights also it's just willa that's being adapted not serafina for reasons I'm not very clear on
Anyways this whole thing is just odd even beyond the whole serafina is not being adapted they're straight cutting to book four of the series and disney doesn't seem to have much if anything to do with it
For a little context in the south within a certain vicinity of ashville (like reaching into other states) the serafina series was marketed HARD everyone knew about it and was supporting it this whole tv show deal tho has been very quiet I've only really seen rumblings of it from the far corners of the internet
They also said in that link above filming locations are not determined yet and this is just me speculating but it does not sound like they are planning on filming it in the smoky mountains again odd that whole area is pretty popular for film projects even hunger games filmed in the Appalachian Mountains so I hope they're gonna film there but idk again I haven't heard ANYTHING
But finally I want to talk about the group that's making it Entertainment One with Amy Adam's Bond Group Entertainment
Entertainment One is kinda interesting when I started looking into them they have things like Peppa Pig dungeons and dragons and insidious they apparently started as a music distributing company that made the switch to movie distribution a few years later and in 2016 a British tv broadcaster ITV plc offered to buy them out for $1.3 bill which they rejected because it was "fundamentally undervalued" the whole time they are pretty much acquiring different other smaller companies left and right and they have a large investment in Quibi I guess? But in mid 2019 Hasbro brought announced that they were apparently acquiring Entertainment one for $4 bill (according to Wikipedia) when hasbro obtained them tho it seems they started making plenty of cuts like laying 10% of it's film and television staff (again number is from Wikipedia) and many branches of the company were straight up closed and by 2022 has brought announced they were planning on selling the company to lionsgate but by the time deal closed last December Entertainment one had already closed its distributing branches in most countries including England and lionsgate bought their assets for $500 mill so safe to say is a dying company that probably won't even last long enough for this project to happen (they were also split into three different separate companies)
Amy Adam's Bond Group Entertainment on the other hand is interesting in a different way according to deadline the company will work mostly with best selling book ip yeah "WILL" seems like this company has not done a whole lot yet the company was only even first launched in 2019 deadline also lists off willa of the wood as one of the things they have in development yeah the show that has basically no buzz is named as one of the biggest things they have in development the company has also very obvious been relying on the name of Amy Adam's so far I mean there's a whole paragraph about her specifically in link to Robert beattys website above
Idk just seems like they have these two companies one that's standing on its last leg and another that's just starting and they're starting halfway through the series it's just odd I'm not letting my hopes up yet because honestly I'll just be happy if it ever even comes out I first heard about this thing a WHILE ago and it's been pretty quite so who knows
Started Willa of the Wood, another book by the author of the Serafina series...
This guy continues to have massive Studio Ghibli vibes without being Studio Ghibli
I mean that in the similarities of character interactions, themes like man vs nature, realism with supernatural ideas sprinkled in, and general kid-protag-but-still-relatable-to-all-ages thing...and maybe some other things I can't put my finger on right now
But damn if Willa of the Wood doesn't feel like some Princess Mononoke stuff right now.
Forest dwelling protag who convenes with other tribes, though she dislikes her own because of how authoritarian it is, wishes to live with the wolves because of how they work more as a team even with a hierarchy in place, still sees humans as enemies/threats...
