This is art. (via zebrakebebra)
What did we do to deserve dogs?
Must have book for every developer and sysadmin ;)
Chewbacca⦠his arms open.
This is some NEXT LEVEL nerd-ing and I nearly cried reading it.
I donāt get it
Please explain ;_;
There is a star trek TNG episode where Picard encounters a race that doesnāt speak in actual structured sentences but conveys ideas through story parralels. The ones referenced here are āDarmok and Jalad at Tanagraā - cooperation, āShaka, when the walls fellā - failure and Temba, his arms wide/open" - signifying a gift.

nice
OK, but hereās whatās awesome/hilarious about this.
The whole point about why communicating with the Tamarians was so frustrating was because all of their communication was contextual. The problem wasnāt that Picard couldnāt understand what words they were saying (the universal translator worked fine) the problem was that he didnāt understand what THOSE WORDS TOGETHER HAD TO DO WITH ANYTHING.
Why is this hilarious/fascinating to me? Because this is essentially what people are doing today with memes. They are posting pictures and writing sentences THAT MAKE NO SENSE WITHOUT PRIOR CONTEXT.
If Picard beamed down right now, and you told him that Data is a cinnamon roll⦠you are a Tamarian.
Reblogging because A) YES! and B) That commentary. Itās so true, itās scary.Ā
I also just want more. ^_^
Actually, this isnāt something just present in memes but it seems to be a foundation of human language and partly why a universal translator could never work (or if it somehow did, it should be programmable to handle Tamarian). Itās just that most metaphors in language are so accepted or necessary to fluency that we donāt really notice them (or they seem to be a common human perspective⦠which aliens donāt necessarily have to share).
It is why when speaking German I have to remember it is, āHow much Clock is it?ā and notĀ āWhat time is it?ā. The metaphor in English seems to be that moments are separate entities/temporal locations that we visit through the day so we need to determine what one we are visiting now. Whereas in German, leaving aside the fact theĀ āclockā can clearly be a stand-in metaphor forĀ ātimeā the overall metaphor there seems to be that moments in time are accumulative entities that we collect through the day and we need to determine how much weāve collected.Ā
And speaking of time, human languages tend towards two metaphors, either favouring one or the other or happily indulging in both⦠either time is a stationary path which the focus moves along (ā⦠as weāre traveling into the month Februaryā¦ā) or time is a river the flows past a stationary focus (āhis birthday is rapidly approachingā). Technically those are metaphors to handle an abstract concept, time could just as easily be metaphorically an object that āappearsā rather than āapproachesā or a location you āturn towardsā instead of āmove intoā⦠and I donāt know if any human language allows you to metaphorically be a man in a boat traveling up a river (or what that would look like/imply) but it is a possibility (especially if you are considering an alien perspective on time).
Leaving behind time, some emotions are metaphorically a direction. Happy is up, sometimes way upĀ ātil youāreĀ āon Cloud 9ā³ (and thereās no obvious reason for it to be the 9th cloud but you accept it) and on the opposite end of that spectrum sadness is down (in the dumps) when it isnāt busy being a colour (blue). And naturally you yourself are a container for your emotions, or more specifically your heart is (at least in English, in Indonesian itās your liver) and the container can be put under pressure until it isĀ ābursting with joyā or it āexplodes in angerā.
And then there are true idioms which actually do reference historic events (which is what I assume is happening in TamarianāsĀ āShaka, when the walls fellā) likeĀ āRead The Riot Actā or if youĀ āheard it through the grapevineā your people had a mess of telegraph wires at some point and grapevines to compare them to. AndĀ āapple of oneās eyeā is weird for being a double metaphor⦠the pupil was once believed to be a solid object metaphorically called anĀ āappleā but then, after Shakespeare popularized the phrase in reference to a person in terms of affection, and science let us know the pupil is not apple-like at all, it came to exclusively meanĀ āthis person is very dear to meā and we all forgot why apples were involved in the first place.
Of course, I am far from a linguistic expert so you should take this allĀ āwith a grain of saltā ;)
Yes, and thereās even an Official Academic name for this: intertextuality! AkaĀ ātexts referring to other textsā ā whether those texts are song lyrics, proverbs, historical references, movie quotes, clichĆ©s, memes, metaphors, in-jokes, parody, fanfic, and so on.Ā
It doesnāt even have to be as explicit as an idiom or metaphor: even a turn of phrase will do. For example, saying somethingĀ āis a truth universally acknowledgedā invokes Pride and Prejudice, or āa thing of beauty and a joy foreverā invokes Keats (although for me it invokes Mary Poppins, because obviously as a kid I watched that movie long before Iād ever heard of Keats), or āStrange women lying in rivers distributing wordsā invokes Monty Python. Intertexuality is one of the reasons people study literary works within the context of what other literary works were important at that place and time, so as to catch the intertextual references that the author may be making.Ā

Perfect life:3
Metamaterial allows light to travel infinitely fast - Could be utilized in future photonic and quantum devices
Electrons are so 20th century. In the 21st century, photonic devices, which use light to transport large amounts of information quickly, will enhance or even replace the electronic devices that are ubiquitous in our lives today. But thereās a step needed before optical connections can be integrated into telecommunications systems and computers: researchers need to make it easier to manipulate light at the nanoscale.
Researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have done just that, designing the first on-chip metamaterial with a refractive index of zero, meaning that the phase of light can travel infinitely fast.

We now have a solution to our global Styrofoam problem - Mealworms
Consider the plastic foam cup. Every year, Americans throw away 2.5 billion of them. And yet, that waste is just a fraction of the 33 million tons of plastic Americans discard every year. Less than 10 percent of that total gets recycled, and the remainder presents challenges ranging from water contamination to animal poisoning.

Hi, everyone! Iām trying to raise some extra cash to pay for car repairs so IāmĀ just taking a moment to remind you ofĀ the originals available in my shop. Iāve discounted the prices on some of them and there are a lot of small really affordable drawings. And as always there are prints, stickers, pins, postcards, and zines.Ā Thank you for looking!
Gob had not mailed the letter, but, in an act of defiance, dramatically hurled the letter into the sea. This proved a more difficult dramatic gesture than heād anticipated.
Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have discovered that when a certain aggressive leukemia is causing havoc in the body, the solution may be to force the cancer cells to grow up and behave.

New in N++: the evil ninja.
We added a bunch of new entities to N++, but this is the entity that really strikes fear into the hearts of ninjas everywhere. The evil ninja is a clone of you, the player, a glitchy, creepy, distorted copy from another time, which follows in your footsteps until it catches up with you. If you keep moving, that canāt happen, but if you slow down, or if you have to cross back through a level (a situation we level designers so gleefully contrive), it comes down to you vs. your past, and in this case, your past is evil.
Plus, as we all know from timeless (oh yes, that was intentional) classics such as Back to the Future, interaction with your selves from other times causes a paradox (also the name for a plurality of evil ninjas, thanks to @The3ndless3cho) ā which in N++, of course, can lead only to death.
Almost everything in N++ leads to death ;)
Weāll be showing you more of evil ninjas soon, we just wanted to show off some close-ups of the awesomely glitchy new graphics.
New old-timey Twilight Zone action figuresĀ announced
Zack sez, āSubmitted for your approval ā Bif Bang Pow! has a new line of action figures inspired by the classic TV series done in the scale and style of such 1980s figure lines as Star Wars. Personal favorites include the Invader from āThe Invadersā and Burgess Meredith as Henry Bemis in āTime Enough at Last,ā who is getting a permanent space on my bookshelf where he can finally enjoy some good literature without worrying about breaking his glasses.ā
These are in addition to the existing line of Bif Bam Pow Twilight Zone toys which include some real standouts like the Mystic Seer bobble-head and the Eye of the Beholder Nurse.
