i never really got it when people made posts about light pollution and seeing all the stars for the first time and crying. i always assumed that everyone has gone on a road trip to a bortle 1.0 place and seen stars like that, and it's fantastic, but not like life changing. and then i went to europe last month and was in a mountaintop village of like 300 people and could see about 5 stars in the sky. like fewer than i can see from my home in a big metropolitan city.

The Pacific Northwest isn’t too bad because our largest cities aren’t that large. I can see a decent amount of stars most of the time. I live close to the Western Most Point of the United States: Neah Bay, WA. Home of the Makah Tribe.

Check out the East Coast of the United States. It has a denser population by comparison making light pollution much worse.

However, I couldn’t properly see the Milky Way until I was camping in rural Minnesota. It was so cool. 🥰

To put this in perspective, in the Midwest US my cousins' very small town (about 1,000 people), surrounded by only farmland, is 4.7 bortle. The lowest I could get it to be (in that surrounding farmland) is 4.4 bortle. My much bigger but not big by any means (sub 200,000 people) Midwestern town? Every part of it is at least 7. Worse in some areas. OP you got lucky with your clicks.

Where I live, on a clear night, we can see the big and little dipper, orion's belt, some planets; some other stars interspersed that I don't know anything about. Nothing close to the pictures I've seen of the sky so full of dots of light there's hardly any nothingness between them.

Huh. I always thought I was just deficient in finding patterns and that's why I could never pick out any constellations in the sky. Turns out I live in a bortle 8.7 area. And the scale maxes out at 9.

Actually, it's so bright here at night that it looks like the sky is glowing, and it's hard to sleep without heavy curtains.
