Sometimes I think about how fucking easy it would have been for the writers of this show to find a way to give max and billy some sort of closure or insight on their relationship even with Dacre not being there. Like by, I don’t know, max mentioning to holly how she learned how to bandage wounds from her brother? (Which is actually canon in the ST vr game, btw) or her talking about HOW she managed to realize that it had not actually been her fault billy died, and the process of coming to terms with that, since holly was going through a similar thing with her mom, whom she did not know was still alive? Or even in the epilogue, they could have shown Max outside of her and Lucas’ relationship for ONE scene, in which we could have seen her unpacking one of the still closed boxes from her previous move which contained some of Billy’s old clothes and similar. And maybe, once she finds the strength to dig through his stuff, she finds a letter on the bottom of the box which had slipped from one of Billy’s old pants’ pockets, and that letter, it turns out, had been written a long time ago, even before he was possessed, back when he was planning to run away from Neil the summer after graduating, and it was directed to her. It would have been such a beautiful parallel to dear billy, and they could have easily gotten Dacre to do the voice over while other scenes from other characters’ lives played in the background, in a similar way to hopper’s during the s3 finale. It would have been an unexpected final plot twist and a beautiful closure for max and the lovers of their messy, complicated and realistic relationship.
