A slave name is the personal name given by others to an enslaved person, or a name inherited from enslaved ancestors. The modern use of the term applies mostly to African Americans and West Indians who are descended from enslaved Africans who retain their name given to their ancestors by the enslavers.
Changing from a slave name to a name embodying an African identity became common after emancipation in the 1960s by those in the African diaspora in the Americas seeking a reconnection to their African cultural roots
A number of African-Americans and Afro-Caribbeans have changed their names out of the belief that the names they were given at birth were slave names. An individual’s name change often coincides with a religious conversion (Muhammad Ali changed his name from Cassius Clay, Malcolm X from Malcolm Little, and Louis Farrakhan changed his from Louis Eugene Walcott, for example) or involvement with the black nationalist movement (e.g., Amiri Baraka and Assata Shakur).
Some organizations encourage African-Americans to abandon their slave names. The Nation of Islam is perhaps the best-known of them. In his book, Message to the Blackman in America, Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad writes often of slave names. Some of his comments include:
“You must remember that slave-names will keep you a slave in the eyes of the civilized world today. You have seen, and recently, that Africa and Asia will not honor you or give you any respect as long as you are called by the white man’s name.”
“You are still called by your slave-masters’ names. By rights, by international rights, you belong to the white man of America. He knows that. You have never gotten out of the shackles of slavery. You are still in them.”
The black nationalist US Organization also advocates for African-Americans to change their slave names
Assata Olugbala Shakur (born JoAnne Deborah Byron; July 16, 1947, sometimes referred to by her married surname Chesimard) is a former member of the Black Liberation Army, who was convicted of the first-degree murder of State Trooper Werner Foerster during a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973. Shakur was also the target of the FBI’s COINTELPRO program, a counterintelligence program directed towards Black Liberation groups and activists
Afeni Shakur (born Alice Faye Williams; January 10, 1947 – May 2, 2016) was an American activist and businesswoman who was the mother of American rapper and actor Tupac Shakur.
Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi Khan. Yvette Marie Stevens (born March 23, 1953), better known by her stage name Chaka Khan, is an American singer, songwriter and musician. Her career has spanned nearly five decades, beginning in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus. Khan received public attention for her vocals and image. Known as the Queen of Funk,Khan was the first R&B artist to have a crossover hit featuring a rapper, with “I Feel for You” in 1984. Khan has won ten Grammys and has sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide.
Mutulu Shakur (born Jeral Wayne Williams; August 8, 1950) is an American activist and former member of the Black Liberation Army, sentenced to sixty years in prison for his alleged involvement in a 1981 robbery of a Brinks armored truck in which a guard and two police officers were killed. Shakur was politically active as a teen with the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM) and later the black separatist movement the Republic of New Afrika. He was stepfather to the late rap artist Tupac Shakur.
Sekou Odinga (born Nathanial Burns) is an American activist who was imprisoned for actions with the Black Liberation Army in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1965, Sekou joined the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), founded by Malcolm X. After Malcolm’s death the OAAU was not going in the direction he wanted and in 1967 he was looking at the Black Panther Party. In early 1968 he helped build the Bronx Black Panther Party. On January 17, 1969 two Panthers had been killed by members of Organization Us (a rival Black Nationalist group) and a fellow New York Panther who was in police custody was brutally beaten. Sekou was informed that police were searching for him in connection with a police shooting. At that point, Sekou joined the black underground with the Black Liberation Army.
Yafeu Akiyele Fula (October 9, 1977 – November 10, 1996), better known by his stage name Yaki Kadafi, was an American rapper, and a founder and member of the rap groups Outlawz and Dramacydal. Kadafi’s parents, Yaasmyn Fula and Sekou Odinga, were both members of the Black Panther Party. Fula and Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, were close friends, and Kadafi and Tupac were friends until their deaths in 1996.
Louis Farrakhan Sr. ( born Louis Eugene Walcott; May 11, 1933), formerly known as Louis X, is an American minister who is the leader of the religious group Nation of Islam (NOI), which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as a black nationalist group. Previously, he served as the minister of mosques in Boston and Harlem and had been appointed National Representative of the Nation of Islam by former NOI leader Elijah Muhammad.
Sundiata Acoli (born January 14, 1937, as Clark Edward Squire) is a former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1974 for murdering a New Jersey state trooper
Prince. Abdul-Rahman ibn Ibrahima Sori (Arabic: عبد الرحمن ابن ابراهيم سوري) (1762–1829) was a Fula nobleman and Amir (commander or governor) who was captured in the Fouta Jallon region of Guinea, West Africa, and sold to slave traders in the United States in 1788.[1] Upon discovering his noble lineage, his owner Thomas Foster began referring to him as “Prince”,[2] a title he kept until his final days. After spending 40 years in slavery, he was freed in 1828 by order of U.S. President John Quincy Adams and Secretary of State Henry Clay, after the Sultan of Morocco requested his release.
Omowale or Malcolm X (May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965) was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a popular figure during the civil rights movement. He is best known for his controversial advocacy for the rights of blacks; some consider him a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans, while others accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history.
Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, he spent his teenage years living in a series of foster homes following his father’s death and his mother’s hospitalization. Little engaged in several illicit activities, and was eventually sentenced to ten years in prison in 1946 for larceny and breaking and entering. In prison, he joined the Nation of Islam (NOI) and changed his name to Malcolm X because, he later wrote, Little was the name that “the white slavemaster … had imposed upon [his] paternal forebears”. After being paroled in 1952, he quickly became one of the organization’s most influential leaders.
Expressing many regrets about his time with them, which he had come to regard as largely wasted, he instead embraced Sunni Islam. Malcolm X then began to advocate for racial integration and disavowed racism after completing Hajj, whereby he also became known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz
Tupac Amaru Shakur; born Lesane Parish Crooks, June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), also known by his stage names 2Pac and Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Much of Shakur’s work has been noted for addressing contemporary social issues that plagued inner cities, and he is considered a symbol of resistance and activism against inequality

Azealia Banks Drops New Song
Azealia Banks has released a new single called "Anna Wintour." The Junior Sanchez-produced track serves as the first formal offering from her long-awaited album Fantasea II. According to a press release, the project will drop via Entertainment One. A released date has yet to be announced. “I wrote this song about finding myself and finding God,” Banks said on Instagram. “This song was written to embody the feeling felt when you connect with the universe.” See her full statement below. "Anna Wintour" follows Banks recently released the single "Movin' on Up." Anna Wintour - Press Shot . : I wrote this song about finding myself and finding God. Not at all specific to any religion, this song was written to embody the feeling felt when you connect with the universe. Sometime we feel afraid to take chances that will bring us out of our comfort zone’s and it’s always in those moments that God finds you and let’s you know that you are exactly in the right place .. at the right time. I am and have been since the age of 12, very inspired by @stacieorrico’s work on her self-titled debut (also executive produced by @harveymasonjr). Her ability to craft songs which teeter along the lines of Gospel/Christian Pop/Pop , is something that inspires me so much. My choice to name this song “Anna Wintour” is telling; I relate to Anna Wintour So much as a strong, powerful and larger than life soul in a petite, tidy and feminine body. While others may see Anna as intimidating , I see a woman who was born into this world with an absolute certainty about her place in it. She is a master of masters..like the life path number 11. A woman with an abundance of personal power who influences and defines the world around her. In my case, having such power can lead to self-indulgences. Meaning, i can become so consumed with a power and an ability to affect the world, that I may have forgotten or in fact - may have never learned to use my power to influence and define myself! This song is one of praise, liberation... as well as a kunty stunt. I pray you all have as much fun listening to it as I had creating it. Howard University Financial Aid Scandal: Students Demand Answers, Continue To Protest
Students at Howard University in Washington D.C. are on their sixth day of protesting at the school's administration building amid a financial aid scandal in which six employees were fired for misusing funds. Students protestors have made nine demands but so far the administration board has only met one—agreeing to extend the deadline for the $200 housing deposit for students until May 1. The students are also demanding the resignation of the school's president, Wayne Fredrick, along with the board of trustees. Fredrick allegedly knew about the scandal six months before it became public. On Monday (April 2), the university issued a statement expressing full support of its president and trustees. "The Council of Deans is confident that the plans, strategies, programs and activities of the University Board of Trustees and President Wayne A.I. Frederick are yielding positive results and are on a positive trajectory for a strong and positive future for our beloved institution," the statement read. Howard University said Fredrick met with students on Monday to hear concerns and answer questions. However, some student protestors weren't informed of the meeting. Information about this meeting was not notified to protesters at all. We're heading into the 6th day of the protest and still haven't directly heard from President Frederick. His gross neglect is a yet another testament of why he's unfit for the presidency. #StudentPowerHU https://t.co/bciUEX4BUc— #StudentPowerHU ✊🏾 (@BasedKvle) April 2, 2018 Fredrick released a statement confirming university grants, which were not federally-funded, were given to some employees who had also received tuition remissions or reductions. The combined financial aid packaged exceeded the cost of attendance. The employees allegedly pocketed the excess money. Signs of the the listed @HUResist demands have been put up on the second floor. Mother Arrested For Using Stun Gun To Wake Son For Easter Service: "Get up! It's Jesus day"
A mother in Arizona found herself in hot water for a very bizarre way of waking her son for Easter church service. Police say Sharron Dobbins, 40, used a stun gun to tase her teenage son on the leg in order to wake him for Sunday service. "I said, 'Get up! It's Jesus' Day!," Dobbins told KNXV. She admits to holding a taser but insists she only flashed its lights and made it spark in order to warn the 16-year-old. "I made the noise with the Taser, but I did not tase my son." The teenager reportedly told officers that Dobbins used the taser, but he did not want to testify against her. According to KNXV, the teen did not complain of any pain but had two bumps on his leg where the taser was used. Dobbins was arrested on suspicion of child abuse with intent to cause harm. She has since been released from jail. Read the full article

Memphis Store Clerk Murders 17-Year-OId Over Beer
A teenager in Memphis was murdered on Thursday (March 29) by a store clerk who believed he stole a can of beer. WREG reports, Top Stop Shop clerk Anwar Ghazi chased 17-year-old Dorian Harris after he allegedly stole a beer from the convenience store then shot him from behind. The teen was found dead two days later next to a woman's home. According to a witness, Ghazali walked back into the store after the shooting and said, "I think I shot him." "He didn't have to kill him, you know?" the witness told the outlet. Police spokesman Louis Brownlee said the shooting was captured on camera and Harris wasn't reported missing. “The victim/suspect stole a beer and goes out of the store. The suspect tries to stop him. Shoots at him. Hits him once. He doesn’t officially know that he hit him. Yesterday, a female comes home, sees a person lying next to the home. Calls police.” He also added, “We don’t want people to steal from businesses. We also don’t want people hunting suspects down and shooting them. If he’s not giving direct, imminent danger to you, leave it be. Call the cops. Let us figure it out.” Ghazali is charged with first-degree murder after admitting to police he shot at the teen several times. He will face a judge Monday morning. We send our condolences to the friends and family of Dorian Harris. Read the full article
Meek Mill's Request For Early Prison Release Denied
Meek Mill won't be getting out of jail anytime soon, however, all hope is not lost. According to the NY Daily News, Judge Genece E. Brinkley issued a decision Monday to deny the Wins & Losses rapper's Post Conviction Relief Act request to be released from prison, declaring that his sentence of two to four years behind bars was "absolutely necessary" after he violated parole. The ruling comes after Meek's arresting officer, Reginald Graham, was listed as a dirty cop who is under investigation by federal authorities for his corruptive acts. "Defendant received proper notice of all alleged probation violations in advance of his hearing," she wrote, according to court documents. "The sentence imposed was not manifestly excessive and this Court stated sufficient reasons on the record to support a state sentence of 2 to 4 years." Meek' legal team was anticipating the request to be denied, so they filed petitions to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court two weeks ago to not only let the rapper out on bail but also order the recusal of Brinkley in his case. Meek's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, slammed Monday's decision as proof that Brinkley has turned the case into a "personal vendetta" against Meek, the daily news reports. "In spite of the recommendations from the Philadelphia District Attorney's office, which was supported by Governor Tom Wolf, the judge continues to stand alone in supporting Officer Reginald Graham's perjured testimony as well as his criminal behavior that has been documented," Tacopina said in a statement. "Fortunately, we have already filed petitions with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to secure his release, and we remain hopeful that the Court will right this injustice very soon." Meek was sentenced to serve two to four years in prison for violating his probation back in November. We will continue to keep you updated on any further developments. Read the full article
South African Activist Winnie Mandela Dies At 81
Winnie Madikizela Mandela was the former wife of South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela. The couple - famously pictured hand-in-hand as Mr Mandela walked free from prison after 27 years - were a symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle for nearly three decades. However, in later years her reputation became tainted legally and politically. Family spokesman Victor Dlamini said in a statement: "She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of the hospital since the start of the year. "She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones." Mrs Mandela was born in 1936 in the Eastern Cape - then known as Transkei. She was a trained social worker when she met her future husband in the 1950s. They were married for a total of 38 years, although for almost three decades of that time they were separated due to Mr Mandela's imprisonment. Despite their separation two years after his release, and their divorce in 1996, she kept his surname and maintained ties with him. (The BBC first reported this story) Read the full article

Matt Barnes To Start Scholarship Fund For Stephon Clark's Sons
Former NBA player and Sacramento native Matt Barnes was among hundreds who attended a peaceful rally for Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man who was gunned down by Sacramento police on March 18. Barnes, who helped organized the rally, spoke about being a father to two boys, similar to Clark and fearing for their lives. He also announced that he is starting a college scholarship fund to provide money and education to ensure Clark's boys go to college. “I have two 9-year-old boys, just like this and I fear for them. I fear for the streets and now I’ve got to fear for the cops. How do we explain to our kids that because of the color of your skin people aren’t going to like you? That’s not fair, but that’s what we have to explain to our kids every day,” the former small power forward said. “So like what we’ve been talking about today, we didn’t want to lose sight of why we’re here. Thank you to everybody who came out and kept it peaceful. We’re going to get some accountability for the stuff that continues to go on and we’re doing it for the kids right here. I’m in the process of starting a Clark Boy scholarship fund to make sure these boys go to college. Like I mentioned earlier, this isn’t a Sacramento problem this is a nationwide problem.” An autopsy commissioned by Clark's family shows police shot the 22-year-old a total of 20 times, eight of which hit him in the back. Officers were reportedly responding to a series of break-ins and thought he had a gun when it was later discovered he was only carrying his cell phone. Mutulu Shakur Files Lawsuit Against The U.S. Government For Illegally Keeping Him In Prison
Former Black Panther Party activist Mutulu Shakur has filed a lawsuit against the United States government, claiming his Constitutional First Amendment rights are being used against him to prevent his release from prison. Shakur, who was sentenced to serve 60 years in prison, has been incarcerated since 1987 after being convicted of robbing a Brinks truck of nearly $2 million and killing three security guards from the company. He was also convicted for aiding and abetting the escape of Assata Shakur from a New Jersey State Prison after she was sentenced to life in 1977 for the murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster. “As established by letters in the record and Plaintiff’s statement at several parole hearings, throughout his incarceration Plaintiff has been outspoken against gang violence and crime," Shakur said in the lawsuit. "He has consistently expressed support for peaceful and constructive changes in all matters involving racial disparities and social justice. He has never in 30 years of incarceration supported or in any way implied support for criminal conduct or violence to achieve social justice." According to The Source, Shakur was denied parole in 2016 because of a positive drug test he failed almost 30 years ago. “The commission has failed to adopt or apply any known standards on the meaning of frequent rule violations," said the lawsuit. "A handful of old telephone rule violations over 30 years do not show Plaintiff frequently violated prison rules or is likely to re-offend If released on parole." Shakur was once a target of the FBI/CIA's infamous Counterintelligence Program (Cointelpro), which began in 1956 under the leadership of J. Edgar Hoover.
