Ingredients: 1 pound can of beans, drained and rinsed or 1.5 cups of cooked beans 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced 2 cups diced veggies (E.g. carrots, celery, chopped artichokes, corn, mushrooms, or zucchini) 2 tsp and 2 tbsp oil for frying (E.g. coconut or olive oil) 3 tbsp liquid flavor (Mix and match ingredients like balsamic vinegar, ketchup, marsala, mustard, pasta sauce, salsa, soy sauce, vegan Worcestershire, or water.) 4 tsp spice (Combine two spices such as black pepper, cayenne pepper, chili powder, cumin, curry powder, fennel, oregano, or paprika.) 1/2 tsp kosher salt (Omit or reduce if your liquid or spice already has salt.) 1 cup dry base ingredient (Try bread crumbs, buckwheat, cornmeal, or oatmeal.) 1/2 cup texture ingredient (E.g. avocado, basil, chopped walnuts, cilantro, olives, parsley, or sun-dried tomatoes) Steps: Heat two teaspoons of oil in a pan over medium heat, then fry the garlic, onion, and other vegetables until they soften for about five minutes. Transfer the ingredients to a food processor and pulse the beans, liquid flavor, spice, and salt. Pulse until the mixture is combined but still chunky. Add the dry base and texture ingredients, then pulse. When you’re done, form the mixture into golf ball-sized chunks and flatten into patties. Heat two tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Fry the veggie burger patties at least two to three minutes per side until they’re browned and heated through. Appallingly, almost half of the juices tested contained enough of the heavy metals to potentially harm children – even when given in amounts as low as 4 ounces a day! Despite growing public awareness of its high sugar content, fruit juice remains a popular beverage for children and adults. In one study, a whopping 80 percent of parents of children three years and younger acknowledged giving children fruit juice at least “sometimes” – and three quarters of the children who drank fruit juice did so at least once a day. Do NOT drink this: Tests reveal troubling levels of heavy metals To conduct the research, scientists at Consumer Reports – a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering and educating consumers – tested 45 varieties of fruit juices currently sold nationwide. The varieties included apple, pear, grape and “fruit blends.” 24 national, store and private-label brands were evaluated, among them Apple and Eve, Capri Sun, Dollar General, Juicy Juice, Mott’s, Whole Foods, Minute Maid, Ocean Spray, Rite Aid, Trader Joe’s and Welch’s. 21 of the juices – including some marketed specifically for children – were found to contain “concerning” levels of cadmium, lead and inorganic arsenic, with grape juice and juice blends displaying the highest average levels. Seven of the tested juices contained levels of heavy metals that could potentially harm children who drank as little as 4 ounces per day – and nine of them posed risks at a cup a day. Despite its healthy-sounding name, Welch’s 100% Juice with Antioxidant Superberry was a potential risk to both children and adults at 4 ounces a day – as were Welch’s White and Concord Grape varieties. But other brands posed risks as well. Eating Flaxseed May Reduce Breast Cancer Mortality By Up To 70% Researchers from the University of Toronto reviewed the literature to answer questions about the compounds found in flaxseed and how effective they are in reducing breast cancer risk and tumor growth, and whether flaxseeds interact beneficially with breast cancer drugs. They reviewed in vitro, animal, observational, and clinical studies on flaxseed and flaxseed oil, as well as lignans found in flaxseed. Lignans are a class of phytoestrogens or plant estrogens that also act as antioxidants. Other foods also contain lignans including sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, grains (rye, barley, wheat and oats), broccoli and beans. But flaxseed has hundreds of times the amount of lignans as any of the others. The University of Toronto review documents the amazing power of flaxseed to prevent and slow the growth of breast cancer. Here's what the studies tell us: The majority of animal studies show a diet of 2.5%-10% flaxseed or the equivalent amount of lignan or flaxseed oil reduces tumor growth. Diets consisting of 10% flaxseed and the equivalent amount of lignans do not interfere with but rather increase the effectiveness of tamoxifen. A diet of 4% flaxseed oil increases trastuzumab/Herceptin effectiveness. Observational studies show flaxseed and lignan intake, urinary excretion, or serum levels are associated with reduced breast cancer risk, particularly in postmenopausal women. Lignans reduce breast cancer mortality by 33% to 70%. They also reduce all-cause mortality by 40%-53%. In both cases, lignans do not reduce the effectiveness of Tamoxifen. Clinical trials show that taking 25 grams per day of flaxseed (containing 50 mg lignans) for 32 days reduces tumor growth in breast cancer patients.
