Holland March is a scumbag, something we all know and love him for. But UGH he's such a interesting character.

I just finished reading The Nice Guys novel, and it gives some extra insights to Holland.

Healy is jealous of March, because March doesn't realize just how good he has it. And oh boy is he right.

Holland cheated on his wife, maybe once, maybe multiple times, but either way he did. He would come home late, barely able to stand because he was so drunk. All this she knew, and she loved him anyway. She believed in absolutes and to her Holland March was an absolute. And he loved her, and only her.

Holland is a pervert who looks at women and thinks about them boning him. He planted evidence when he was a cop so that a strip club he liked didn't lose business, putting an innocent guy behind bars for years. He scams old rich people out of their money and has his 13 year old daughter drive him around to bars so he can get drunk.

He's a shitty parent, Holly knows it, Holland knows it, everyone knows it, but despite that, Holly loves her dad and feels a sense of pride whenever he actually achieves something. Whenever she's in a scary situation, she imagines what her dad would do. She trusts that despite being a man who never follows through and breaks promises, would never break one he made to her.

And Holland would do anything to protect his little girl.

Hell even Healy himself cares for March, even if it's just a bit. He finds Holland to be a pain in the neck, an asshole, a deadbeat, but still, he can't help but think that he's still a nice guy. He protects March, jumping in to save him even if that means putting himself in danger. He cares for March's daughter, developing a soft spot for her. And continues to partner with March, despite calling him the "worlds worst detective" and forming The Nice Guys agency.

Holland March is an asshole, alcoholic, deadbeat, pervert, cheater, scammer, and coward. He knows this and hates himself for it. But despite this, he has people who love him unconditionally. And I'm not entirely sure March knows that

Healy's right. He really does have it good.

March’s wife died around Thanksgiving. A little under a year before the movie/book takes place. (Late October)

Healy drinks quite a bit of ginger ale

March smokes Camels

Healy was born on a U.S. military transport ship halfway across the Atlantic, moved to New York, then at 18 he went to California for a probation program a judge offered him, which he did until he was 21

Healy’s job was to pick avocados and oranges and other things that built up his muscles and stamina and taught him some Spanish, up to the age of 21. After Healy swore to never eat another avocado ever again (and he hasn’t)

Healy’s older brother is an Air Force engineer

When Holly is looking for Amelia at the party, and the woman comes up and questions her about why she’s looking for Amelia, Holly is thinking “what would dad say, what would dad say, what would dad say–”

March internally describes Healy as a “stubbled Buddha”

Healy also finds March handsome, he refers to him internally as “playboy”

March has had the impulse to stop drinking, he's never given into it, but he has thought about it.

Jesus, March really is attracted to like everyone. He things Amelia’s mother is sexy and kinda wishes she would bone him.

Healy is jealous of March, his daughter, his job, his home, and he is pissed and annoyed at March, because March doesn't seem to realize, always fucking himself over somehow

March had a cousin named April, April March, she hated her parents

March’s cheek twitches when he's panicking and he blinks a lot

Amelia was almost kicked out of her own protest group

Amelia calls Healy Dad internally and sarcastically, but also sees him as dad like

Amelia doesn’t like March

March is a bit of a pervert

Amelia refers to Holland and Jackson as Holly’s parents

March continuously offers a drink to Healy, Healy constantly refuses

“Who the fuck was Healy to him, that he’d put himself in danger to help him? Huh? But there he was, racing for the stairs while everybody else was still pouring down the other direction, trying to get away. He could sit down and have a good long think about it later, but right now, he was gonna fucking get up there.” -March

(extra, I just think this quote is sweet and sad)

He put his head down and barreled back through the crowd, whacking people aside with his elbows, with the cast, with his shoulders, he didn't fucking care, that was his goddamn daughter out there. He wasn't a detective anymore, he wasn't even a father, he was a goddamn guided missile. March had already lost one of the only two women he'd ever loved, he was damned if he was going to lose the other.”  -March

Healy played guitar when he was younger, he wasn't exactly good but he did

Healy has a brother (which is where he got the guitar)

The girl at the beginning that Healy's paid to watch is named Kitten

Healy's wife is named June (I forgot if this is mentioned in the movie)

March’s cop friend is called William Mulroney

Healy often thinks about his word-of-the-day and word definitions quite a bit. He really likes nuanced words.

Between some chapters there's a word-of-the-day

Holland lost his sense of smell after getting hit in the head with a board studded with rusty nails

March actually goes and looks around Amelia’s home by simply walking in (her door is UNLOCKED)

March actually does own real detective shit, it's kinda cool

Healy longs to feel needed, but he's not an altruist

The razor March uses in his car is a Christmas gift from Holly

March doesn't have good posture, because fuck good posture (he'll sit up straight if a foxy chick hires him)

March gets most of his cases from old people in an old folks home

March was a corrupt cop (he didn't do anything terrible, but he did plant some evidence)

“Holly and Holland. Cute.” - Healy

March wanted a boy, to name “Holland Jr.”

“I’m sure he’s glad with what he’s got” -Healy

“She shrugged. ‘Not usually.” - Holly

(TLDR at the end)

Apparently (I believe this is how it goes) March has/had a bad habit of falling asleep with a lit cigarette in bed. March's wife was complaining about the leak in the stove, and since

Holland has his nose thing, he couldn't smell the gas that was very clearly filling up the house. Now one day he falls asleep with his lit cigarette.

The fire was caused by this gas leak and his wife probably turning on a light or something else electrical. Holland being asleep, unable to smell the gas or smoke, woke up to the explosion/fire already engulfing the house.

Holland only had time to get to one room, Holly's room and get her out. But because the fire was already so large, he couldn't get to his wife so she died.

Holland blamed himself, because of his cigarette.

This caused him to be afraid of falling asleep with a lit cigarettes again and accidentally causing another fire and killing Holly and himself.

So instead he'll fall asleep in the bathtub or pool so that if the cigarette falls, the water would put it out.

(TLDR)

So basically, Holland couldn't smell a gas leak because of his nose thing. His wife likely flipped a light switch, causing a electrical spark, causing a massive explosion. Holland woke up to the fire and barely saved Holly, but couldn't reach his wife in time.
